Welcome to the FMA Board — 2003 vs Brotherhood, Manga, and Everything In Between

Obligatory first post — 2003 or Brotherhood?

2003 is the better standalone piece of fiction. Brotherhood is more faithful but the pacing in the early arcs is rushed because they assumed you already watched 2003.
Welcome to the Fullmetal Alchemist board.

Ground rule number one and the only rule that actually matters: both versions are valid. The 2003 series by Bones diverges from the manga around episode 25 and becomes its own story with its own ending. Brotherhood (2009) is the faithful manga adaptation. They are different works that share a premise. You do not have to pick one. You can love both. You can have a favourite. What you cannot do is pretend the other does not exist.

What we cover:

The 2003 series — all 51 episodes plus Conqueror of Shamballa. The production context. Why Bones went original. The Funimation dub, which is genuinely excellent and one of the better English dubs of its era. The alchemy system, the homunculi, the military structure of Amestris, Ishval, the Philosopher Stone.

History note:

Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 aired at the exact moment the Western fansub scene was at its peak. Fans were watching raw, timing their own subtitles, running their own distribution. The community that formed around that gap is part of what this board exists to remember.

Equivalent exchange.

Both are correct answers for different reasons. 2003 has a melancholy that Brotherhood never quite reaches. Conqueror of Shamballa is genuinely moving.

Hot take — Dante is a more interesting villain than Father.

Not even a hot take, she is motivated by something human. Father is just evil geometry.
