Effective: March 2026 — AnimeHistory.org — Operated from British Columbia, Canada

This site was built by one person who grew up watching fansubs at 2am and felt a moral obligation to preserve the culture that built the Western anime audience. It is non-commercial. It generates no revenue. No advertising. No donations. No data sales. No premium tiers. It exists because the internet used to have places like this and most of them are gone now.

We think that is a problem worth fixing. Here is how we are fixing it - and yes, we have thought about the legal side.

▸ Ownership of Content

All anime characters, series titles, studio logos, and related imagery remain the exclusive intellectual property of their respective rights holders. We know. We respect it. This includes but is not limited to:

Toei Animation — Shueisha — TV Tokyo — Bandai Namco — MAPPA — Studio Pierrot — Madhouse — Bones — Sunrise — NHK — Viz Media — Funimation — Aniplex — and all other respective holders.

AnimeHistory.org makes no claim of ownership over any of this material. We are fans. We are documenting history. We are not a streaming service, and we are definitely not making money.

▸ The Archive - Let's Be Honest

Yes, this site maintains a rotating limited archive of select episodes. We are not going to pretend otherwise - that would be both dishonest and frankly insulting to everyone's intelligence. Here is what it actually is:

- A small rotating selection of 3-5 episodes per featured series
- Curated specifically for critical review and historical documentation
- Focused on fan restorations, preservation projects, and historically significant releases
- Access-gated behind demonstrated community engagement - not money
- Never a full series. Never a library. A curated sample.

To access archived episodes, members must have earned enough community points through posting, commenting, writing articles, and contributing to discussion. This is not a loophole - it is the point. Every person who downloads an episode here has actively participated in the critical discussion of that episode. That is not piracy. That is a reading group with better file formats.

▸ Fan Restorations & Preservation

Some content in our archive is not an official release at all - it is a fan restoration project. The Dragon Ball Z Seed of Might remaster, for example, is a fan-produced color correction of the original Japanese broadcast source. It has never been commercially available in this form. It represents years of work by dedicated fans to preserve what the original broadcast actually looked like before it was processed, cropped, and re-released with different color grading.

We believe preserving this work is culturally important. If you disagree, you are welcome to send us a strongly worded letter. We will read it respectfully.

▸ Fair Dealing - Canadian Copyright Act, Section 29

This site operates under the Fair Dealing provisions of the Canadian Copyright Act (R.S.C., 1985, c. C-42), Section 29, which permits use of copyrighted material for:

Research — Private Study — Education — Criticism — Review — News Reporting

Our points-gated archive is specifically designed to ensure that every person accessing archived content is an active participant in the criticism and review of that content. The engagement requirement is not just a vibe - it is a documented record that our users are here to discuss, not just consume. We think that matters legally. We also think it matters culturally.

▸ Non-Commercial - Completely

There is no money here. No ads. No subscriptions. No Patreon. No merch. No affiliate links. No sponsored content. No premium tier. No data monetization. The only currency on this site is community points, which are worth exactly nothing in any financial sense and everything in terms of how much you have contributed to the conversation.

The webmaster pays for the server out of pocket. This is a labour of love and mild obsession. Commercial intent is not just absent - it is actively contrary to everything this site stands for.

▸ User-Generated Content

Forum posts, comments, articles, and other user content are the responsibility of the individual members who post them. We moderate for hate speech, harassment, and spam. Everything else is the unfiltered opinions of anime fans who have been on the internet long enough to have opinions.

By registering, you agree that your contributions may be moderated. You also implicitly agree that the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball Z is historically interesting but the original Japanese broadcast looks significantly better. This is not a legal requirement. It is simply correct.

▸ Takedown Requests - Notice-and-Notice

We operate in accordance with Canada's Notice-and-Notice regime under the Copyright Modernization Act. If you represent a rights holder and believe content here infringes your copyright, contact us before doing anything else. We are cooperative, reasonable, and will respond promptly.

1. Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to be infringed.
2. The specific URL(s) of the allegedly infringing material.
3. Your contact information - name, address, telephone, and email.
4. A statement of good faith belief that the use is not authorized.
5. A statement that the information in your notice is accurate.

Send notices to: systems@animehistory.org

Valid notices will be acted on same day. Frivolous notices will be ignored. We have genuine respect for creators and studios - many of whom built the anime industry we are here to celebrate.

▸ Privacy

We collect your username, email, and the content you post. That is it. Your email is never displayed publicly and is used only for account management and password resets. We set one session cookie to keep you logged in. No tracking. No analytics. No advertising networks. No third-party anything.

We are also not responsible for what you do with files you download. We assume you are an adult who understands how files work.

▸ General Disclaimer

AnimeHistory.org is provided as-is by one person with a server, a large collection of anime opinions, and a genuine belief that the internet was better when it was made by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. We make no warranties about uptime, accuracy, or the behaviour of other members.

We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or officially connected to any anime studio, distributor, or publisher. All opinions are those of their respective authors. The webmaster's opinions are his own and held with perhaps more conviction than is strictly necessary.

If you read this entire document, you are either a lawyer, a very thorough person, or someone who has been on the internet long enough to actually care about this stuff. In any of those cases - welcome. This site was built for people who pay attention.
