Details & Synopsis
Naruto Uzumaki was born on the night the Fourth Hokage sealed the Nine-Tailed Fox inside him to save the village. The village watched the demon go in. It forgot to tell the child what it had done to him. What followed was twelve years of a boy growing up knowing he was hated and not knowing why, loud, relentless, failing every test, eating ramen alone, until the day he graduated dead last from the Academy and became a ninja anyway through sheer refusal to stay down.
That is the premise. What the series becomes is something larger.
Naruto ran for 220 episodes on TV Tokyo from 2002 to 2007, produced by Studio Pierrot from Masashi Kishimoto's manga. The Chunin Exam arc is one of the great tournament sequences in shonen history. Naruto vs. Neji is a thesis statement about fate and effort that the show earns through fifty episodes of buildup before it delivers. The Sasuke Retrieval arc ends on failure, the hero does not get his friend back, does not keep his promise, is found in the dirt by Kakashi while Sasuke walks away, and that failure is the most radical thing a shonen series had done to its protagonist in years.
In the West, Cartoon Network aired a version. That version was not this. The broadcast cut removed blood, altered dialogue, and softened the things the show was specifically built around. The fansub community knew it immediately. ANBU-AonE, the result of a merger between two of the era's most respected groups, became the definitive answer. Their karaoke openings. Their translation fidelity. The weekly releases that IRC rooms and BitTorrent trackers distributed before streaming existed as a concept. Before Crunchyroll. Before legal alternatives. Before anyone in the industry believed Western audiences would watch anime subtitled in volume.
This archive holds the complete ANBU-AonE fansub run, all 220 episodes, the version the community actually watched, the version that built the Western Naruto fandom from the ground up. Not the broadcast. Not the remaster. The original release, as it was distributed, as it was intended.
This is provenance. This is the record.

Introduction Arc 5 eps 5 canon 📷 5
001 Enter: Naruto Uzumaki! Aired Oct 3, 2002 canon 📷 162
Naruto Uzumaki is the loudest kid in the Hidden Leaf and the one almost everyone would rather avoid. After failing the graduation exam again, he is manipulated by Mizuki into stealing the Scroll of Sealing and finally learns why the village has always treated him differently: the Nine-Tailed Fox that attacked Konoha was sealed inside him as a baby. Iruka chooses Naruto over the monster everyone else sees, and Naruto answers by unleashing the Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu, earning his forehead protector and becoming a ninja at last.
002 My Name is Konohamaru! Aired Oct 10, 2002 canon 📷 188
Freshly graduated and entirely convinced he already understands what being a ninja means, Naruto runs into Konohamaru, the Third Hokage's grandson. Konohamaru wants a shortcut to defeating his grandfather and becoming Hokage, while Naruto is the first person who refuses to treat him like royalty. Their ridiculous partnership ends with Naruto teaching him the Sexy Jutsu and, more importantly, telling him there is no shortcut to becoming Hokage.
003 Sasuke and Sakura: Friends or Foes? Aired Oct 17, 2002 canon 📷 124
The Academy graduates are assigned to three-person squads, putting Naruto together with Sakura and Sasuke under a jonin named Kakashi Hatake. Naruto is thrilled about Sakura, furious about Sasuke, and immediately makes everything worse by tying Sasuke up and impersonating him to get closer to her. By the time Team 7 finally meets Kakashi, their new sensei has already heard enough to know this group is going to be work.
004 Pass or Fail: Survival Test Aired Oct 24, 2002 canon 📷 124
Kakashi gives Team 7 its first real test: take one of two bells from him before noon or go back to the Academy. Naruto attacks head-on, Sasuke tries to outfight him, Sakura gets caught in Kakashi's genjutsu, and all three discover how enormous the gap is between an Academy graduate and an experienced jonin. The two bells make the test look like a competition between teammates, which is exactly the trap Kakashi wants them to fall into.
005 You Failed! Kakashi's Final Decision Aired Oct 31, 2002 canon 📷 197
Kakashi announces that all three students have failed, then gives Sasuke and Sakura one final order: do not feed Naruto while he is tied to the post. They break the rule anyway because they know they will need him if the test continues. That is the answer Kakashi was waiting for. The bells never mattered; choosing the team over the rules did, and Team 7 officially passes.
Land of Waves Arc 14 eps 14 canon 📷 14
006 A Dangerous Mission! Journey to the Land of Waves! Aired Nov 7, 2002 canon 📷 161
After too many lost cats and village chores, Naruto complains his way into Team 7's first C-rank mission: escort the bridge builder Tazuna home to the Land of Waves. The job stops looking routine when the Demon Brothers ambush them and Naruto freezes while Sasuke and Kakashi respond like actual shinobi. Humiliated and poisoned, Naruto drives a kunai into his own hand to bleed the poison out and swears he will never freeze like that again. Tazuna has clearly hidden how dangerous this mission really is.
007 The Assassin of the Mist! Aired Nov 14, 2002 canon 📷 111
Tazuna finally admits why enemy ninja are after him: the shipping magnate Gato has strangled the Land of Waves economically, and the bridge Tazuna is building could break that control. Team 7 chooses to continue despite the mission being far more dangerous than advertised. Their next attacker is no disposable thug. Zabuza Momochi, the Demon of the Hidden Mist, comes for Tazuna and forces Kakashi to uncover the Sharingan.
008 The Oath of Pain Aired Nov 21, 2002 canon 📷 124
Kakashi initially matches Zabuza, but the fight turns when Zabuza traps him inside the Water Prison and sends a water clone after the rest of Team 7. Kakashi tells the kids to take Tazuna and run. Naruto nearly does, until the wound in his hand reminds him of the promise he just made. He and Sasuke improvise a transformation-and-shuriken attack that forces Zabuza to release the prison and gets Kakashi back into the fight.
009 Kakashi: Sharingan Warrior! Aired Nov 28, 2002 canon 📷 147
Freed from the Water Prison, Kakashi turns the battle completely around by using the Sharingan to read and copy Zabuza's techniques almost as quickly as he can perform them. Zabuza is beaten, only for a masked hunter-nin to appear and seemingly kill him with senbon before taking the body away. Naruto cannot stand how easily someone near his own age apparently finished a fight he could barely survive. Kakashi collapses from overusing the Sharingan, and the victory immediately starts looking suspicious.
010 The Forest of Chakra Aired Dec 5, 2002 canon 📷 112
Recovering at Tazuna's house, Kakashi realizes the masked hunter-nin did not dispose of Zabuza's body the way a real hunter would. Zabuza is almost certainly alive, which means Team 7 needs to improve before the rematch. Kakashi starts with chakra control and gives Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura a deceptively simple exercise: climb a tree without using their hands. Sakura gets it first while Naruto and Sasuke turn training into another competition.
011 The Land Where a Hero Once Lived Aired Dec 12, 2002 canon 📷 106
Naruto and Sasuke grind through tree-climbing training while Sakura travels into town with Tazuna and sees what Gato's control has done to the Land of Waves. At home, Tazuna's grandson Inari mocks Naruto's talk about courage and heroes because he has already watched the man he believed in, Kaiza, executed by Gato. Naruto refuses to accept Inari's surrender and promises to prove that giving up is not the only answer.
012 Battle on the Bridge! Zabuza Returns!! Aired Dec 19, 2002 canon 📷 319
Naruto finishes his tree-climbing training and meets a gentle stranger in the woods gathering herbs. The stranger tells him that people become truly strong when they have someone precious to protect, a thought Naruto understands even before he knows who he is talking to. The next morning Team 7 reaches the bridge and finds Zabuza waiting exactly as Kakashi predicted. Beside him is the same masked shinobi who carried him away.
013 Haku's Secret Jutsu: Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals Aired Jan 9, 2003 canon 📷 107
The rematch splits into two fights: Kakashi faces Zabuza again while Sasuke takes on the masked shinobi, Haku. Sasuke's speed surprises Haku at first, but Haku answers with his kekkei genkai, forming a prison of Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals around him. From inside the mirrors Haku can attack from every direction faster than Sasuke can track, turning the bridge into a fight Sasuke cannot simply outpace.
014 The Number One Hyperactive, Knucklehead Ninja Joins the Fight!! Aired Jan 16, 2003 canon 📷 119
Naruto finally reaches the bridge and makes the most Naruto entrance possible, loudly announcing himself while Kakashi begs him to think before moving. Instead of helping Sasuke from outside Haku's ice mirrors, Naruto charges directly into the trap and gets sealed inside with him. Haku tears through Naruto's Shadow Clones and keeps both boys pinned down, but being trapped together also forces Naruto and Sasuke to start fighting like teammates instead of rivals.
015 Zero Visibility: The Sharingan Shatters Aired Jan 23, 2003 canon 📷 120
Zabuza covers the bridge in dense mist and changes tactics, attacking without giving Kakashi's Sharingan a clean view of him. Inside Haku's mirrors, Naruto and Sasuke continue taking punishment while Sasuke begins adjusting to Haku's impossible speed. The two battles become tests of experience: Kakashi is fighting an assassin who learned from their first encounter, while Sasuke is trying to develop fast enough to survive an opponent who has spent years fighting beside Zabuza.
016 The Broken Seal Aired Jan 30, 2003 canon 📷 113
Sasuke's eyes begin to change under pressure, giving him just enough Sharingan perception to start reading Haku's movement between the mirrors. Haku realizes that if the fight continues Sasuke may eventually catch up, so he decides to finish it quickly. When Haku launches a killing attack at Naruto, Sasuke moves without thinking and takes the barrage himself. Naruto catches him as he falls and believes Sasuke has died protecting him.
017 White Past: Hidden Ambition Aired Feb 6, 2003 canon 📷 113
Believing Sasuke is dead, Naruto's grief and rage crack open the power sealed inside him. Nine-Tails chakra floods out, healing his injuries and giving him enough speed and strength to smash through Haku's ice mirrors. Haku knows he has lost and asks Naruto to kill him, while memories of his childhood reveal how a feared bloodline left him alone until Zabuza gave him a purpose. Naruto hesitates because the enemy in front of him no longer feels like a monster.
018 The Weapons Known as Shinobi Aired Feb 13, 2003 canon 📷 104
Naruto cannot bring himself to kill Haku after hearing how completely he built his life around being useful to Zabuza. Across the bridge, Kakashi corners Zabuza with his ninja hounds and commits to ending the fight with the Lightning Blade. Haku senses the danger and abandons Naruto at the last instant, throwing himself between Kakashi and Zabuza. Haku dies protecting the person he chose as precious, while Kakashi immediately turns on the wounded Zabuza and destroys his ability to keep fighting.
019 The Demon in the Snow Aired Feb 20, 2003 canon 📷 122
Gato arrives with hired thugs, announces that Zabuza was always disposable, and insults Haku's body as if none of it mattered. Naruto finally breaks through Zabuza's insistence that shinobi are only tools, and the Demon of the Hidden Mist admits through tears that Haku mattered to him after all. With both arms ruined, Zabuza takes a kunai in his mouth and cuts through Gato's men to kill him before dying beside Haku. Inari returns with the people of the Land of Waves, the bridge is completed, and Tazuna names it the Great Naruto Bridge.

020 A New Chapter Begins: The Chunin Exam! Aired Feb 27, 2003 canon 📷 123
Back in Konoha after the Land of Waves, Naruto is already bored with routine missions when shinobi from other villages begin arriving for the Chunin Exams. The newcomers include the Sand siblings Temari, Kankuro, and Gaara, whose presence makes it clear this is bigger than another village test. Kakashi recommends all three members of Team 7 for the exam, opening the door to a much wider ninja world.
021 Identify Yourself: Powerful New Rivals Aired Mar 6, 2003 canon 📷 127
Iruka is furious that Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura have been recommended for the Chunin Exams so soon after graduating and questions whether Team 7 is ready. Kakashi stands by the decision, convinced the three have already been tested in ways most rookies have not. As the candidates gather, the rookie teams from Konoha meet rivals from across the villages and get their first real look at the competition.
022 Chunin Challenge: Rock Lee vs. Sasuke! Aired Mar 13, 2003 canon 📷 125
On the way to register, Sasuke is challenged by Rock Lee, a genin whose bowl cut and eyebrows make him easy to underestimate right up until he starts moving. Sasuke's Sharingan can see Lee's taijutsu but cannot make his body keep up with it, and Lee nearly finishes him with the Primary Lotus before Might Guy intervenes. For Sasuke, it is an ugly reminder that simply being an Uchiha does not put him above everyone else.
023 Genin Takedown! All Nine Rookies Face Off! Aired Mar 20, 2003 canon 📷 130
Team 7 officially registers for the Chunin Exams and enters a room packed with genin from every major village. Kabuto Yakushi introduces himself as an experienced repeat applicant and uses his ninja info cards to size up competitors like Gaara and Rock Lee. Naruto responds to the pressure in the most Naruto way possible, loudly declaring that he will beat everyone in the room and instantly making himself a target.
024 Start Your Engines: The Chunin Exam Begins! Aired Mar 27, 2003 canon 📷 160
The first exam begins under Ibiki Morino, Konoha's interrogation specialist, with a written test far beyond what most of the genin should reasonably know. The real challenge slowly becomes obvious: gather the answers by cheating without getting caught, using whatever ninja skills each team has available. Sakura can actually solve the questions, Sasuke figures out the trick, and Naruto sits there with a blank page and a growing problem.
025 The Tenth Question: All or Nothing! Aired Apr 3, 2003 canon 📷 122
Ibiki reveals the tenth question and attaches a brutal condition to it: anyone who attempts it and fails will supposedly lose the right to take the Chunin Exams again. Teams begin withdrawing rather than risk their futures, leaving Naruto with every reason to quit and none of the answers he needs. He refuses anyway, declaring he will become Hokage even if he remains a genin forever, and that refusal is the answer. Everyone who stayed passes the first exam.
026 Special Report: Live from the Forest of Death! Aired Apr 10, 2003 mixed 📷 120
Konohamaru, Moegi, and Udon arrive at the Chunin Exam site to cover the event for the Academy newspaper, turning the episode into a recap of Naruto's story so far. Through their interviews, the show revisits Team 7's formation, the Land of Waves, and the road that brought Naruto to the exams. There is new framing material, but this is fundamentally a catch-up episode before the Forest of Death begins.
027 The Chunin Exam Stage 2: The Forest of Death Aired Apr 17, 2003 canon 📷 122
Anko Mitarashi leads the surviving teams to the Forest of Death and explains the second exam: each squad receives either a Heaven or Earth Scroll, must steal the opposite scroll from another team, and reach the central tower with both within five days. Death is explicitly on the table. Team 7 enters the forest knowing that every other squad is now both competition and a possible source of the scroll they need.
028 Eat or Be Eaten: Panic in the Forest! Aired Apr 24, 2003 canon 📷 135
The Forest of Death immediately proves how easy it is to lose control of a situation. An enemy replaces Naruto with a transformation, but Sasuke catches the impostor because the fake misses a small detail only his teammates would know. After the real Naruto returns, Team 7 encounters a terrifying Grass ninja whose killing intent freezes Sasuke and Sakura in place. The exam stops feeling like a test and starts feeling like survival.
029 Naruto's Counterattack: Never Give In! Aired May 1, 2003 canon 📷 224
Sasuke is so overwhelmed by the Grass ninja's killing intent that he considers surrendering their scroll just to survive. Naruto refuses, punches sense back into him, and attacks an opponent he has no realistic chance of beating. As Naruto's anger rises, Nine-Tails chakra begins leaking out, forcing the enemy to take him seriously. The Grass ninja answers by sealing that power and leaving Naruto unconscious, putting the fight back on Sasuke.
030 The Sharingan Revived: Dragon-Flame Jutsu! Aired May 8, 2003 canon 📷 255
Naruto's refusal to run snaps Sasuke out of his fear, and Sasuke finally turns his Sharingan and full firepower on the Grass ninja. He lands the Dragon Flame Jutsu and appears to corner the attacker, only to discover he has been fighting Orochimaru. Orochimaru marks Sasuke with the Cursed Seal and disappears, leaving him collapsed in agony with a promise that the seal will drive him toward power.
031 Bushy Brow's Pledge: Undying Love and Protection! Aired May 15, 2003 canon 📷 155
With Naruto and Sasuke unconscious, Sakura spends the night guarding them alone while Orochimaru's Sound genin close in. Rock Lee abandons his own team long enough to protect her, taking on Dosu, Zaku, and Kin by himself and using the Primary Lotus against Dosu. The attack fails, Lee is beaten down, and Sakura is left facing the Sound trio with no one else standing between them and her teammates.
032 Sakura Blossoms! Aired May 22, 2003 canon 📷 155
Sakura finally reaches the point where waiting for someone stronger to save her is no longer acceptable. She cuts her own hair to escape Kin's grip and throws herself into a brutal fight against the Sound genin despite knowing she is outmatched. Lee's earlier promise and her frustration with always standing behind Naruto and Sasuke push her forward. By the time help arrives, Sakura has already proven the important part to herself: she can stand and fight.
033 Battle Formation: Ino-Shika-Cho! Aired May 29, 2003 canon 📷 155
Ino watches Sakura getting torn apart and can no longer pretend their old rivalry matters more than what is happening in front of her. Team 10 joins the fight, bringing the Ino-Shika-Cho formation into the field for the first time as Shikamaru, Choji, and Ino combine their clan techniques against the Sound trio. The battle turns again when Sasuke finally wakes and the Cursed Seal begins changing him.
034 Akamaru Trembles: Gaara's Cruel Strength! Aired Jun 5, 2003 canon 📷 155
Sasuke wakes under the influence of Orochimaru's Cursed Seal and terrifies everyone around him, brutally punishing Zaku until Sakura's embrace brings him back to himself. The Sound team retreats rather than keep fighting him. Elsewhere, Team 8 remembers crossing paths with Gaara, whose effortless slaughter of another team leaves Akamaru shaking. The Forest of Death now has more than one person everyone should be afraid of.
035 The Scroll's Secret: No Peeking Allowed Aired Jun 12, 2003 canon 📷 145
Team 7 has only one day left and still needs the second scroll, which leads Naruto to suggest opening the scroll they already have and trying to forge the other one. Kabuto stops them before they trigger the trap hidden inside and offers to travel with them toward the tower. The shortcut is gone, so Team 7 still has to win the scroll they need the hard way.
036 Clone vs Clone: Mine are Better Than Yours! Aired Jun 19, 2003 canon 📷 145
Team 7 and Kabuto are caught in a genjutsu laid by the Hidden Rain team and keep walking through the same stretch of forest while their strength drains away. Naruto wastes energy attacking endless clones until the group realizes brute force is exactly what the enemy wants. Team 7 finally turns the trap around, defeats the real Rain genin, and secures the second scroll needed to finish the exam.
037 Surviving the Cut! The Rookie Nine Together Again! Aired Jun 26, 2003 canon 📷 143
Team 7 reaches the central tower and opens both scrolls, summoning Iruka, who confirms that they passed the Forest of Death. The surviving rookie teams reunite after five days of fighting, and the number of successful candidates is still far too high for the exam to move directly to the finals. The Third Hokage and exam officials prepare one more cut: immediate one-on-one preliminary matches.
038 Narrowing the Field: Sudden Death Elimination! Aired Jul 3, 2003 canon 📷 131
Twenty-one genin remain, so the Third Hokage explains the political purpose behind the Chunin Exams before Hayate announces sudden-death preliminaries. Kabuto withdraws before the fights begin, leaving twenty competitors and ten matches. The first name on the board is Sasuke Uchiha, who has to fight Yoroi while still dealing with the Cursed Seal Orochimaru left on him.
039 Bushy Brow's Jealousy: Lions Barrage Unleashed! Aired Jul 10, 2003 canon 📷 145
Sasuke faces Yoroi with strict orders from Kakashi not to use chakra, because activating the Cursed Seal could let it consume him. Yoroi makes that almost impossible by draining chakra on contact and slowly wearing him down. With his usual weapons limited, Sasuke borrows the movement he saw from Rock Lee and creates the Lion's Barrage on the spot, winning the first preliminary without relying on the seal.
040 Kakashi and Orochimaru: Face-to-Face! Aired Jul 17, 2003 canon 📷 144
Kakashi takes Sasuke away after the match and applies the Evil Sealing Method to suppress Orochimaru's Cursed Seal, only for Orochimaru himself to appear and make his interest in Sasuke explicit. Kakashi threatens him anyway, even while knowing how dangerous that fight would be. Back in the arena, Shino faces Zaku and turns the Sound ninja's arm cannons against him by secretly blocking the vents with insects.
041 Kunoichi Rumble: The Rivals Get Serious! Aired Jul 24, 2003 canon 📷 145
Kankuro faces Misumi and lets the Sound ninja believe he has twisted his body into submission, only to reveal that Misumi has been grappling with the puppet Crow. Kankuro ends the match quickly once the trick is exposed. The next draw puts Sakura against Ino, turning a childhood friendship and years of rivalry into the first preliminary where neither fighter has an obvious physical advantage.
042 The Ultimate Battle: Cha! Aired Jul 31, 2003 canon 📷 145
Sakura and Ino fight to a standstill while memories of their childhood explain how admiration, rivalry, and Sasuke pulled the two friends apart. Ino finally catches Sakura with the Mind Transfer Jutsu and tries to force her to surrender from inside her own body. Sakura's refusal is strong enough to push Ino back out, and both girls exhaust themselves in one final exchange that ends with neither able to continue.
043 Killer Kunoichi and a Shaky Shikamaru Aired Aug 7, 2003 canon 📷 145
The preliminaries continue with two very different demonstrations of how specialized these genin already are. Temari completely dismantles Tenten's weapon-heavy style with her fan, then Shikamaru faces Kin and turns her own wires, bells, and attention against her with the Shadow Possession Jutsu. What looks like laziness from Shikamaru becomes obviously dangerous the moment he has enough information to build a plan.
044 Akamaru Unleashed! Who's Top Dog Now? Aired Aug 14, 2003 canon 📷 145
Naruto draws Kiba and Akamaru, and Kiba enters the match convinced he got one of the easiest opponents left. Kiba's speed, sense of smell, and Beast Human Transformation keep Naruto under pressure, but Naruto uses Shadow Clones and transformations to confuse him and stay in the fight. Food Pills push Kiba and Akamaru even harder, forcing Naruto to find a way around an opponent who can track him by scent.
045 Surprise Attack! Naruto's Secret Weapon! Aired Aug 21, 2003 canon 📷 148
Kiba's nose is supposed to make deception impossible, so Naruto attacks the sense itself, using transformations and Kiba's own expectations against him. Then the fight is decided by the least dignified weapon in the Chunin Exams: Naruto accidentally passes gas directly in front of Kiba's hypersensitive nose. With Kiba stunned, Naruto unveils the Naruto Uzumaki Barrage and wins a match almost everyone expected him to lose.
046 Byakugan Battle: Hinata Grows Bold! Aired Aug 28, 2003 canon 📷 135
The next preliminary puts Hinata against Neji, two Hyuga cousins carrying the weight of the clan's main and branch families into the same ring. Neji attacks her confidence before he attacks her body, insisting that people cannot escape the roles they are born into. Naruto's encouragement gets Hinata to stand her ground, and the timid girl everyone expects to fold activates her Byakugan and chooses to fight him anyway.
047 A Failure Stands Tall! Aired Sep 4, 2003 canon 📷 136
Neji's Gentle Fist shuts down Hinata's chakra network piece by piece, but she keeps standing long after the match has become dangerous. Naruto's refusal to give up has become something she can borrow when her own courage starts failing. Neji finally moves to kill her and has to be stopped by the jonin. Naruto sees Hinata's blood on his hand and swears that he will defeat Neji in the finals.
048 Gaara vs. Rock Lee: The Power of Youth Explodes! Aired Sep 11, 2003 canon 📷 247
Rock Lee finally gets the opponent he has been waiting for in Gaara, whose automatic sand defense makes ordinary taijutsu look useless. Guy gives Lee permission to remove the training weights from his legs, and the entire arena learns how much speed Lee has been carrying around in reserve. For the first time, Gaara is forced backward and his supposedly untouchable defense starts getting hit.
049 Lee's Hidden Strength: Forbidden Secret Jutsu! Aired Sep 18, 2003 canon 📷 148
Lee uses the Primary Lotus on Gaara, only to discover that the body he smashed was protected by a shell of sand. The technique leaves Lee exhausted and exposed while Gaara remains frighteningly composed. With ordinary taijutsu no longer enough, Guy gives Lee permission to open the Inner Gates and use the far more dangerous Hidden Lotus.
050 The Fifth Gate: A Splendid Ninja is Born! Aired Sep 25, 2003 canon 📷 158
Lee opens five of the Eight Inner Gates and attacks Gaara at a speed almost no one in the arena can follow. The Hidden Lotus tears through Gaara's defenses, but Gaara survives by cushioning the final impact with sand and then crushes Lee's arm and leg. Guy stops Gaara from finishing him. Even unconscious and broken, Lee's body tries to rise when the match is called, because standing back up has become that deeply wired into him.
051 A Shadow in Darkness: Danger Approaches Sasuke! Aired Oct 2, 2003 canon 📷 164
Choji faces Dosu in the final preliminary and loses quickly when the Sound ninja bypasses his Human Boulder with a sound-based attack. With the field finally narrowed, the Third Hokage explains the one-month break before the finals and the remaining competitors draw their matchups. Away from the arena, Orochimaru and Kabuto continue moving around Sasuke, making it clear the exam is now sitting on top of something much larger.
052 Ebisu Returns: Naruto's Toughest Training Yet! Aired Oct 9, 2003 canon 📷 164
Kakashi hands Naruto's training over to Ebisu while he focuses on Sasuke, and Naruto is insulted until Ebisu immediately exposes how poor his chakra control still is. Water-walking becomes the next exercise, and Naruto starts improving faster than Ebisu expects. Their session ends when they catch a white-haired man spying on the women's bath, and Ebisu is promptly knocked out by the stranger's summoned toad.
053 Long Time No See: Jiraiya Returns! Aired Oct 16, 2003 canon 📷 160
The stranger introduces himself as Jiraiya, one of the Legendary Sannin, although Naruto is much more interested in calling him the Pervy Sage. Naruto pesters him into taking over the training, and Jiraiya quickly realizes Orochimaru placed an additional seal on Naruto during the Forest of Death. Removing the Five Elements Seal fixes the disruption in Naruto's chakra control and finally gives him a fair shot at learning properly.
054 The Summoning Jutsu: Wisdom of the Pervy Sage! Aired Oct 23, 2003 canon 📷 164
Jiraiya teaches Naruto the Summoning Jutsu and discovers that ordinary chakra only produces tiny, useless tadpoles. The real target is the Nine-Tails chakra buried inside him, so Jiraiya starts pushing Naruto toward the conditions that make that power surface. Meanwhile, Hayate overhears Kabuto and Baki discussing the planned invasion of Konoha, learns too much, and is killed before he can report it.
055 A Feeling of Yearning, a Flower Full of Hope Aired Oct 30, 2003 canon 📷 163
Naruto keeps grinding away at the Summoning Jutsu while Sakura and Ino visit the hospital and discover Sasuke has disappeared to train with Kakashi. Elsewhere, Sakura visits Rock Lee and begins to understand how badly Gaara damaged him. The month between the preliminaries and finals is almost over, with every surviving competitor preparing in a different way for what comes next.
056 Live or Die: Risk It All to Win It All! Aired Nov 6, 2003 canon 📷 165
Naruto still cannot summon anything larger than a tadpole, so Jiraiya decides the only way to force out the Nine-Tails chakra is to make Naruto believe his life is genuinely in danger. He throws Naruto into a deep ravine and leaves him to either access the fox's power or die. Cornered inside his own mind, Naruto finally confronts the Nine-Tails directly and demands chakra in exchange for continuing to serve as its container.
057 He Flies! He Jumps! He Lurks! Chief Toad Appears! Aired Nov 13, 2003 canon 📷 164
Naruto uses the Nine-Tails chakra and summons Gamabunta, the enormous chief toad, but summoning him turns out to be easier than convincing him Naruto did it. Gamabunta refuses to recognize a kid as his summoner and challenges Naruto to stay on his back until sunset. Naruto hangs on through everything the toad throws at him and finally earns a measure of respect before collapsing from exhaustion.
058 Hospital Besieged: The Evil Hand Revealed! Aired Nov 20, 2003 canon 📷 163
Naruto wakes in the hospital after three days unconscious from his training, with the Chunin Exam finals almost here. Shikamaru visits and the two stumble into Gaara's attempt to attack the injured Rock Lee, forcing them to confront how little they understand about him. Gaara's childhood and the fear surrounding the One-Tail begin to explain why he treats killing as proof that he exists, until Guy arrives and ends the confrontation.
059 The Final Rounds: Rush to the Battle Arena! Aired Nov 27, 2003 canon 📷 164
Naruto is late for the finals and makes the mistake of accepting Konohamaru's help getting to the arena. A series of terrible shortcuts turns what should be a simple trip across the village into a race against the clock. Naruto finally reaches the stadium in time, where Neji is already waiting for the first match of the finals.
060 Byakugan vs. Shadow Clone Technique! Aired Dec 4, 2003 canon 📷 164
The Chunin Exam finals begin with Naruto against Neji. Naruto floods the arena with Shadow Clones, but Neji's Byakugan lets him identify and dismantle attacks from every direction while his Gentle Fist targets Naruto's chakra network directly. The fight quickly becomes the argument they have been building toward since Hinata's match: Neji insists fate is fixed, and Naruto refuses to accept that anyone is trapped by what they were born as.
061 Ultimate Defense: Zero Blind Spot! Aired Dec 11, 2003 canon 📷 163
Neji unveils the Rotation and Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms, shutting down Naruto's chakra points and apparently ending the fight. He explains the Hyuga branch family's curse mark and the death of his father, using his own life as proof that fate cannot be escaped. Naruto hears the story and still rejects the conclusion, promising to beat Neji precisely because he knows what it is like to be judged by something decided at birth.
062 A Failure's True Power Aired Dec 18, 2003 canon 📷 170
With his normal chakra network blocked, Naruto reaches for the Nine-Tails and forces enough power through his body to keep fighting. He overwhelms Neji's assumptions, then uses a Shadow Clone as a decoy while tunneling underground and landing the final uppercut from below. Naruto wins. After the match, Hiashi gives Neji the truth about his father's death, beginning to loosen the hatred the branch-family story built inside him.
063 Hit It or Quit It: The Final Rounds Get Complicated! Aired Jan 8, 2004 canon 📷 162
Naruto's win throws the planned order of the finals into confusion because Sasuke still has not arrived. Kankuro withdraws rather than reveal his techniques before the Sand's larger plan, leaving Shikamaru and Temari as the next match. Shikamaru would rather be anywhere else, but he walks into the arena anyway while everyone waits to see whether Sasuke will show.
064 Zero Motivation: The Guy with Cloud Envy! Aired Jan 15, 2004 canon 📷 164
Shikamaru spends most of his match with Temari looking like he wants to surrender, all while quietly mapping the arena, the sun, her attack range, and every shadow available to him. He eventually traps her with the Shadow Possession Jutsu and proves he had a winning plan. Then he forfeits because he has calculated that he does not have enough chakra to finish the fight. It is the most Shikamaru victory imaginable even though the record says he lost.
065 Dancing Leaf, Squirming Sand Aired Jan 22, 2004 canon 📷 163
The arena waits for Sasuke while Gaara's patience frays and the officials come close to disqualifying him. Kakashi and Sasuke finally arrive at the last possible moment, and the long-delayed match begins. Sasuke immediately shocks everyone by matching Rock Lee's speed closely enough to get through Gaara's automatic sand defense, forcing Gaara to retreat behind an increasingly desperate shell.
066 Bushy-brow's jutsu Sasuke style! Aired Jan 29, 2004 canon 📷 164
Sasuke's month with Kakashi shows immediately: he has copied the high-speed taijutsu he saw from Rock Lee and can finally hit Gaara through the sand. Gaara seals himself inside a sphere of sand and begins preparing something inside it, while Temari and Kankuro grow increasingly nervous about what their brother is becoming. Sasuke takes to the wall and begins charging the technique Kakashi spent the month teaching him.

The injury interrupts the Sand's timetable, but the invasion plan cannot wait any longer. Genjutsu drops over the stadium, the disguised Kazekage takes the Third Hokage hostage, and the Chunin Exams collapse into the opening move of Orochimaru's attack on Konoha.

With Sasuke already pursuing the Sand siblings, Kakashi wakes Sakura from the stadium genjutsu and sends her after him with Naruto, Shikamaru, and Pakkun. As they move through the forest, a squad of Sound ninja picks up their trail and starts closing in from behind.

Hiruzen is suddenly fighting his own teachers while the barrier keeps Konoha's strongest backup outside. The scale changes instantly: Wood Style, Water Style, and Enma enter the fight, and the old Hokage has to face both the village's past and the student he once failed to stop.
072 A Mistake from the Past: A Face Revealed! Aired Mar 11, 2004 mixed 📷 162
The rooftop battle forces Hiruzen to remember the moment he discovered Orochimaru's human experiments and still let his former student escape. In the present, the First and Second Hokage keep pressing him while Orochimaru treats the entire fight like proof that age has finally caught his teacher. Hiruzen realizes there is no clean way out of this battle and begins preparing the technique meant to end it.
073 Forbidden Secret Technique: Reaper Death Seal! Aired Mar 18, 2004 canon 📷 164
Hiruzen summons the Reaper and uses the Reaper Death Seal against the First and Second Hokage, tearing their souls out of the bodies Orochimaru reanimated. Outside the village, Sasuke catches Kankuro and Gaara's group, but Shino arrives to take Kankuro off his hands so Sasuke can keep chasing Gaara. Both fronts narrow at once: Hiruzen is gambling his life on one forbidden technique, and Sasuke is finally closing on the opponent he followed out of the arena.
074 Astonishing Truth! Gaara's Identity Emerges! Aired Mar 25, 2004 mixed 📷 163
Hiruzen turns the Reaper Death Seal on Orochimaru himself, but extracting his former student's soul is far harder than sealing the reanimated Hokage. In the forest, Sasuke catches Gaara and sees the transformation the Chidori wound started in the stadium continue across Gaara's body. The fight Sasuke wanted at the finals is gone; what stands in front of him now is something much closer to the monster inside Gaara.
075 Sasuke's Decision: Pushed to the Edge! Aired Apr 1, 2004 canon 📷 161
Sasuke uses Chidori again despite already burning through most of his chakra, pushing himself past Kakashi's limit in an attempt to stop Gaara. The Cursed Seal flares when his body can no longer support another attack, leaving him helpless as Gaara keeps changing. Sakura and Naruto finally catch up, and Gaara pins Sakura to a tree, forcing Naruto into the fight Sasuke can no longer finish.
076 Assassin of the Moonlit Night Aired Apr 8, 2004 canon 📷 163
Naruto confronts Gaara, but the battle keeps pulling Gaara back into the childhood that made him this way. He remembers Yashamaru, the one person he believed loved him, and the assassination attempt that destroyed that belief. By the time Gaara returns to the present, his conviction that he exists only by killing others makes terrifying sense to Naruto, because Naruto can see exactly where their lives resemble each other.
077 Light vs. Dark: The Two Faces of Gaara Aired Apr 15, 2004 canon 📷 163
Naruto recognizes that Gaara grew up with the same loneliness he did and is shaken by how easily he might have become the same kind of person. The difference is the people who eventually reached Naruto, and protecting Sakura and Sasuke gives him a reason to keep moving even when fear tells him to run. He overwhelms Gaara with Shadow Clones and turns their fight into a clash between two jinchuriki who learned opposite answers to the same pain.
078 Naruto's Ninja Handbook Aired Apr 22, 2004 canon 📷 165
Naruto throws everything he has at Gaara, from swarms of Shadow Clones to the Thousand Years of Death trick Kakashi taught him, but Gaara's transformation keeps escalating. When Gaara finally lets Shukaku emerge fully, Naruto answers with the one technique big enough for the problem and summons Gamabunta. The fight leaves the forest floor and becomes something far larger than a genin battle.
079 Beyond the Limit of Darkness and Light Aired Apr 29, 2004 canon 📷 145
Gamabunta fights the fully emerged Shukaku while Naruto tries to reach Gaara, whose sleep allows the One-Tail to take control. Naruto and Gamabunta combine Transformation Jutsu to get close enough for Naruto to wake Gaara and break Shukaku's hold. With both boys nearly empty, the fight comes back down to fists, headbutts, and the question of who still has a reason to keep standing.

086 A New Training Begins: I Will Be Strong! Aired Jun 17, 2004 canon 📷 184
With Sasuke left in Konoha for treatment, Jiraiya takes Naruto on the road and finally begins teaching him the technique he promised. It looks simple until he tries it, and Jiraiya makes it clear that this is only the first step.
087 Keep On Training: Pop Goes the Water Balloon! Aired Jun 24, 2004 canon 📷 183
Naruto keeps working on the first Rasengan exercise until he figures out how to create the chaotic rotation needed to burst the water balloon. Jiraiya immediately replaces it with a rubber ball, raising the difficulty from rotation to power and concentration. 088 Focal Point: The Mark of the Leaf Aired Jul 1, 2004 canon 📷 183
Naruto struggles to pop the rubber ball until a small mark on his palm gives him the focal point he needs to concentrate his chakra. With the second stage finally broken, Jiraiya reveals the real challenge: combine rotation, power, and containment in the palm without letting the chakra explode outward. Their search also brings them closer to Tsunade, the legendary medical ninja Jiraiya has been sent to find.

Sasuke's frustration finally boils over on the hospital roof, where he challenges Naruto to a real fight. 108 Bitter Rivals and Broken Bonds Aired Nov 18, 2004 canon 📷 211
Kakashi tries to talk Sasuke down after the rooftop fight, warning him that revenge will not give back the family he lost. 109 An Invitation from the Sound Aired Nov 25, 2004 canon 📷 215
The Sound Four offer Sasuke the power of the Cursed Seal's second state and tell him Orochimaru is waiting. Shikamaru immediately lays out a formation built around everyone's specialties, and the five leave the village knowing they are chasing Orochimaru's elite escorts.
111 Sound vs. Leaf Aired Dec 9, 2004 canon 📷 212
The retrieval squad catches the Sound Four, but the enemy traps them inside Jirobo's Earth Prison Dome before they can reach Sasuke. The walls repair themselves faster than brute force can break them, and the prison steadily drains the team's chakra. Shikamaru studies how Jirobo maintains the barrier instead of wasting strength, while the Sound Four keep moving with Sasuke.
112 Squad Mutiny: Everything Falls Apart! Aired Dec 16, 2004 mixed 📷 213
Still trapped inside Jirobo's chakra-draining dome, the team begins to weaken and tempers turn on Shikamaru's leadership. Shikamaru appears to bargain with Jirobo and betray the others, but the act is meant to make the enemy reveal where he is feeding chakra into the barrier. Once Shikamaru identifies the weak point, Choji breaks them out and chooses to stay behind so the others can keep chasing Sasuke.
113 Full Throttle Power! Choji, Ablaze! Aired Jan 6, 2005 mixed 📷 214

114 Good-bye Old Friend...! I'll Always Believe in You! Aired Jan 13, 2005 mixed 📷 212
Choji remembers the years when Shikamaru was the first person to treat him like a friend instead of a joke, and that memory settles the choice in front of him. He takes the red chili pill, erupts in butterfly-wing chakra, and overwhelms Jirobo with the Butterfly Bullet Bombing. Choji wins, but the technique empties him completely and he collapses alone beside the path while trusting Shikamaru to finish the mission.

Kidomaru's webs catch the retrieval team, and Neji realizes his Byakugan is the best chance they have of escaping without losing more time. He stays behind while Naruto, Shikamaru, and Kiba continue the pursuit. Kidomaru studies Neji's Rotation from a distance and discovers the tiny blind spot in the Byakugan's field of vision. He enters the second state of the Cursed Seal and begins firing chakra-guided arrows from outside Neji's effective range. Neji can see almost everything coming, but one missing angle is enough for Kidomaru to start landing attacks that no ordinary opponent could.
117 Losing Is Not an Option! Aired Feb 3, 2005 canon 📷 250
Badly wounded, Neji allows Kidomaru's final arrow to pierce him so he can keep hold of the chakra thread attached to it. He sends Gentle Fist chakra back through the line and strikes Kidomaru internally from a distance, turning the enemy's own attack into a path to his body. Neji wins the battle and collapses remembering Naruto's refusal to accept the fate other people chose for him.
118 The Vessel Arrives Too Late Aired Feb 10, 2005 canon 📷 287
Naruto, Shikamaru, Kiba, and Akamaru are still chasing the Sound ninja through the night and try a surprise attack to close the distance. 121 To Each His Own Battle Aired Mar 3, 2005 canon 📷 246
Ukon merges into Kiba's body and begins destroying his cells from inside, forcing Kiba to stab himself just to make staying there dangerous. The mission has reached the point where all three fights look close to impossible.
122 Fake-out: Shikamaru's Comeback! Aired Mar 10, 2005 canon 📷 247
Kiba and Akamaru escape Sakon and Ukon badly wounded while Shikamaru hides from Tayuya long enough to understand how her summons and flute work together. He uses the shadows cast by her own creatures to turn the battle around and catches her with Shadow Possession, but Tayuya's Cursed Seal gives her enough raw strength to resist him. 124 The Beast Within Aired Mar 24, 2005 canon 📷 251
Naruto leaves Rock Lee with Kimimaro and runs after Sasuke. Lee's recently repaired body cannot match Kimimaro cleanly until he accidentally drinks sake instead of medicine and slips into Drunken Fist, becoming so unpredictable that even Kimimaro struggles to read him. The bizarre advantage does not last forever, and Lee's condition starts catching up with him.
125 The Sand Shinobi: Allies of the Leaf Aired Mar 31, 2005 canon 📷 246
Just as Shikamaru, Kiba, and Lee are reaching their limits, help arrives from the least expected direction: Temari, Kankuro, and Gaara. 128 A Cry on Deaf Ears Aired Apr 21, 2005 canon 📷 165

129 Brothers: Distance Among the Uchiha Aired Apr 28, 2005 canon 📷 278
Naruto keeps fighting to stop Sasuke while Sasuke insists that bonds are exactly what he must sever to gain power. The battle pulls Sasuke back into memories of childhood, when he admired Itachi and spent years trying to earn the same attention from their father. Long before the massacre, Sasuke was already measuring himself against a brother he could never quite reach.
130 Father and Son, the Broken Crest Aired May 5, 2005 mixed 📷 294
Sasuke's memories continue with Fugaku teaching him the Fireball Jutsu and finally acknowledging his progress, giving the younger son a moment of the approval he had chased for years. In the present, Sasuke uses that same technique against Naruto and keeps pressing the fight. The family memories make his decision to abandon Konoha feel less like a sudden betrayal and more like the endpoint of an obsession built across his entire childhood.
131 The Secrets of the Mangekyo Sharingan! Aired May 12, 2005 mixed 📷 279
Sasuke remembers the night the Uchiha clan was massacred and Itachi revealed the Mangekyo Sharingan. 132 For a Friend Aired May 19, 2005 canon 📷 122
Kakashi learns how serious Naruto and Sasuke's fight has become and sends his ninja hounds ahead while he races toward the Valley of the End. Sasuke attacks Naruto with the intent to break their bond and invokes Itachi's claim that killing his closest friend can awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan. Their fight escalates until Chidori and Rasengan collide again, this time with no Kakashi standing between them.
133 A Plea from a Friend Aired May 26, 2005 canon 📷 253
Nine-Tails chakra surges around Naruto and gives him the power to keep fighting after Sasuke's attacks should have ended it. Sasuke's three-tomoe Sharingan tracks Naruto's movements, but the chakra cloak begins moving in ways even he cannot fully predict. Naruto tells Sasuke that the bond between them matters precisely because he grew up without a family, and the fight becomes less about winning than refusing to let Sasuke erase that bond.
134 The End of Tears Aired Jun 2, 2005 canon 📷 254
Naruto's chakra forms a one-tailed cloak while Sasuke releases the second state of the Cursed Seal, transforming both boys for the final exchange. 135 The Promise That Could Not Be Kept Aired Jun 9, 2005 canon 📷 254
Kakashi reaches the Valley of the End too late and finds Naruto unconscious after Sasuke has already gone. Back in Konoha, the retrieval team is gathered up and treated, while Shikamaru takes the failure especially hard because the mission was his responsibility and several friends nearly died under his command. Sasame's connection to the Fuma clan leads Naruto, Sakura, and Jiraiya deeper into territory controlled by people who have already chosen Orochimaru over their own family. Trust breaks down when the group is ambushed and Sasame is forced to confront what has happened to the clan she wanted to save. The closer they get to Orochimaru's hideout, the less this looks like a simple rescue mission.
139 Pure Terror! The House of Orochimaru Aired Jul 7, 2005 filler 📷 164
Naruto and Sakura enter one of Orochimaru's abandoned hideouts and find exactly the kind of place his name promises: traps, experiments, and enemies who know the tunnels better than they do. The search for Sasuke keeps pulling them forward even as Jiraiya warns that Orochimaru rarely leaves anything behind without a reason. By the end, the team realizes they have walked into a nest built to keep intruders from ever reaching the truth.
140 Two Heartbeats: Kabuto's Trap Aired Jul 14, 2005 filler 📷 165
Kabuto appears inside the hideout and uses deception to keep Naruto and Sakura off balance while the Fuma clan's involvement becomes clearer. Sasame's missing cousin Arashi is finally tied directly to Orochimaru's experiments, and the rescue she imagined begins looking much uglier than she feared. 141 Sakura's Determination Aired Jul 21, 2005 mixed 📷 165
Naruto and Sakura face Arashi after Orochimaru's experiments have twisted him into something barely holding together. Arashi uses the Fuma clan's secret techniques while Sakura keeps fighting through injuries and refuses to leave Sasame behind. 148 Search for the Rare Bikochu Beetle Aired Sep 8, 2005 filler 📷 164

Shino leads the search while Kiba and Hinata help Naruto navigate a forest filled with insects and rival trackers. For Naruto, the strange bug hunt matters because it is the first genuinely new lead on Sasuke in a long time.
149 What's the Difference? Don't All Insects Look Alike? Aired Sep 15, 2005 filler 📷 165
The search for the Bikochu continues while Naruto struggles to understand the difference between the countless insects Shino can identify at a glance. Hinata trains alone at night, quietly developing a defensive Gentle Fist technique of her own rather than simply trying to imitate Neji. 154 The Enemy of the Byakugan Aired Oct 20, 2005 filler 📷 165
Raiga's greatest advantage is not only his lightning blades but Ranmaru, the sickly boy he carries with him. The fight shifts from simply defeating Raiga to understanding the bond between him and the child who acts as his eyes.
155 The Dark Creeping Clouds Aired Oct 27, 2005 filler 📷 165
The team discovers Ranmaru and begins to understand how completely his life has been tied to Raiga. Protagonist / Hated Outcast

A loud, aggressively hyperactive twelve year old orphan who navigates a childhood of absolute emotional desolation, entirely isolated by a village that watches him with cold, unspoken contempt. Unaware that the supreme commander sealed the demonic, apocalyptic Nine Tailed Fox inside his newborn belly to guarantee the community's survival, he resorts to disruptive theatrical pranks and public vandalism just to force the world to acknowledge his breathing existence. Wielding a fundamentally bottomless reservoir of volatile stamina and an unyielding refusal to ever lay down in the dirt, he challenges the very concept of preordained fate. He trains until his knuckles bleed to master the forbidden Multi Shadow Clone jutsu, vowing to claim the supreme title of Hokage so that every soul within the borders will finally be forced to respect his name.

Rival / Last Avenger of the Bloodline

The brooding, aristocratic prodigy of Team 7 who graduates at the absolute peak of his academy class, carrying the crushing psychological trauma of a slaughtered lineage. As the solitary survivor of the historic Uchiha clan annihilation, his reality is entirely structured around a singular, blinding obsession to hunt down and execute his older brother for the midnight murder of their parents. He initially dismisses his novice peers as mere obstacles to his progress, until the lethal environment of real combat forces him to rely on his active squad. His dormant bloodline capability, the Sharingan eye, first sparks to life inside the white fog of the Land of Waves, granting his crimson pupils the terrifying ability to map air displacements and read enemy hand signs in real time, locking him firmly into the path of vengeance.

Supporting / Academic Novice

A sharp, textbook smart young girl whose pristine academic exam scores mask an absolute lack of real world tactical experience and physical combat stamina. Initially driven purely by a superficial infatuation to maintain Sasuke's romantic attention, the brutal, unsparing reality of active warfare repeatedly leaves her vulnerable and paralyzed on the front lines. Her internal awakening occurs during the harrowing survival trials inside the Forest of Death, where she is forced to discard her shallow vanities, physically slicing away her long hair with a kunai to shield her unconscious, broken teammates from a sound ninja execution squad, marking her transition into a true shinobi.

Mentor / Copy Ninja of the Sharingan

The elite, silver haired Jonin commander of Team 7 whose lazy, perpetually tardy demeanor and public obsession with cheap romance novels serve as a tactical mask for a lifetime of black ops trauma and absolute military precision. Celebrated across foreign borders as the copy ninja who has mapped and memorized over a thousand distinct techniques using a transplanted left Sharingan eye, he operates as an unyielding protective shield over his rookie novices. He tests their fundamental character with a brutal bell trial, teaching them the foundational philosophy that while those who break the rules of the ninja world are scum, those who abandon their comrades are far worse than scum.

Mentor / Foundational Anchor

An ordinary Chuunin level Academy instructor who carries zero legendary lineage or high tier combat output, yet operates as the absolute psychological anchor of the entire franchise. Having lost his own parents during the historical demon fox assault twelve years prior, he fights past his own residual grief to become the solitary human being who acknowledges Naruto Uzumaki's breathing worth. He steps directly into the path of Mizuki's giant shuriken to shield his orphan student, weeping openly as he validates the child as a worthy shinobi of the Hidden Leaf. His simple empathy alters the trajectory of the boy's life, providing a vital shield against the darkness of absolute isolation.

Antagonist / Demon of the Hidden Mist

A rogue executioner and master of the silent killing technique who fled the Land of Water after orchestrating a brutal, bloody coup inside the Hidden Mist's old testing grounds. Wielding the massive, flesh cleaving Kubikiribocho blade, he operates as a high tier mercenary for corporate tycoons, serving as Team 7's first authentic taste of battlefield lethality. Moving through a thick, claustrophobic fog of his own creation, his unsparing efficiency completely outclasses the rookies, forcing Kakashi to reveal the Sharingan. His iron mercenary mask cracks permanently during the bloody snow of the Land of Waves, revealing a tragic human heart that refuses to let his companion perish unavenged.

Antagonist / Instrument of the Mist

A beautiful, serene orphan from the Land of Water who possesses an incredibly rare, bloodline limit ability that allows him to construct a localized matrix of crystalline ice mirrors. Viewing his physical existence purely as a disposable tool to be weaponized by Zabuza, he moves between his targets with blinding velocity to deliver precise, needle based strikes that bypass conventional speed limits. His gentle nature prevents him from executing his enemies out of malice, preferring to act as a silent shield. He throws his physical body directly into the path of Kakashi's lightning blade to safeguard his master, defining the ultimate metric of loyalty and sacrifice for the early generation.

Supporting / Taijutsu Prodigy

A spirited young warrior who possesses absolute zero capability in ninjutsu or genjutsu, rendering him a tragic outcast and laughingstock among his academy peers. Under the specialized, hyper intense tutelage of Might Guy, he transforms his physiological deficiencies into a weapon of pure kinetic perfection, refining his hand to hand taijutsu to a tier that completely bypasses conventional ninja arts. Moving with unadulterated velocity, his legendary performance during the Chunin selection trials showcases his willingness to drop his iron training weights and tear apart his own muscle fibers to crack through Gaara's ultimate sand armor. He demonstrates to the gathered nations that unyielding, raw human effort can violently shatter the preordained boundaries of inherited genius.

Supporting / Leaf's Green Beast

The boisterous, eccentric Jonin commander of Team Guy whose hyperactive obsession with the fires of youth and matching green jumpsuits masks an absolute master of the human body and one of the village's most lethal close quarters assets. Operating as the eternal, self declared rival to Kakashi Hatake, his lighthearted antics disguise a deep, protective wisdom forged through his own historical struggles as a non-genius student. He dedicates his entire lineage of knowledge to shielding and validating Rock Lee, passing down the forbidden, lethal kinetic system of the Eight Inner Gates. He watches over his pupils with a fierce paternal devotion, prepared to step directly into the jaws of death to safeguard their right to forge their own paths.

Rival / Genius of the Branch House

The cold, aristocratic prodigy of the Hyuga clan's branch house whose staggering natural talent and flawless mastery of the gentle fist style earn him the reputation of the most dangerous rookie in the village. Blighted by the compliance seal burned into his forehead, he harbors a deep, venomous resentment against the main house lineage, adopting a fatalistic philosophy that maps out a human life as an unalterable track determined at birth. Armed with the absolute 360 degree perception of the Byakugan eye, he ruthlessly deconstructs his targets until his structural worldview is fundamentally shattered during a high stakes stadium duel with Naruto Uzumaki, forcing him to accept that a bird in a cage can choose to break the iron bars and fly.

Supporting / Gentle Fist Heiress

The timid, soft spoken heiress to the legendary Hyuga clan who struggles beneath the suffocating expectations of a brutal ancestral lineage and the unsparing scrutiny of her father. Born with the pristine Byakugan bloodline, her natural empathy and quiet hesitation are initially misconstrued by her household as a pathetic lack of martial resolve, leading to her systematic abandonment in favor of her younger sister. Deeply inspired by Naruto's vocal refusal to ever surrender to a preordained fate, she finds her internal core during a savage Chunin Exam duel against her own cousin, Neji. Standing her ground while spitting blood, she uncoils her family's gentle fist style to prove that her kindness is not a weakness, but the foundational anchor of an unshakeable shinobi spirit.

Supporting / Precision Strategist

A brilliant, hyper analytical Genin whose staggering IQ surpasses an score of two hundred, yet whose baseline ambition operates at absolute zero. Preferring to spend his days watching clouds drift across the sky rather than engaging in the grueling physical mechanics of ninja training, his lazy demeanor conceals a master chess player who maps out entire battlefields inside his head. Utilizing his family's signature Shadow Possession jutsu, he controls enemy movements with mathematical precision, calculating dozens of moves ahead to turn an opponent's kinetic momentum into a terminal trap. His tactical brilliance during the Chunin Exam tournament earns him the distinction of being the solitary rookie promoted to Chunin, forcing him to shoulder the heavy weight of field command.

Supporting / Mind Control Operative

The fiercely competitive and fashionable kunoichi of Team Ten who utilizes her family's signature Mind Transfer jutsu to project her consciousness directly into an enemy's physical vessel to seize absolute control of their motor systems. While her early motivations are frequently obscured by a superficial, petty rivalry with Sakura Haruno regarding Sasuke's attention, her tactical utility inside a three man formation is undeniably high. She risks her own spiritual safety to execute long range psychological infiltrations, demonstrating an elite baseline focus that anchors the historical Ino-Shika-Cho tactical formation under Asuma's supervision.

Supporting / Team Ten Jonin

The boisterous, tobacco smoking Jonin commander of Team Ten who carries the elite pedigree of the Hokage bloodline beneath his casual, street level demeanor. He monitors his rookie charges with a relaxed vigilance, using trench knives channeled through his wind elemental chakra to deliver high output, armor piercing slashes in close quarters combat. He operates as a vital older brother figure to Shikamaru Nara, challenging the lazy genius to games of shogi to subtly cultivate the boy's strategic processing units. His unvarnished wisdom grounds the team, preparing them for the reality of field command while anchoring them to the hidden values of the village.

Rival / The Demon of the Hidden Sand

The unstable, terrifying jinchuriki of the Hidden Sand Village who enters the Chunin selection trials as a ticking kinetic engine of pure malice. Raised inside a military household that repeatedly deployed assassin squads to liquidate him during his early childhood, he uses his absolute control over sand to form an impenetrable, automatic physical shield that reacts to any encroaching threat. Viewing all human life as mere fuel to validate his solitary existence through slaughter, his armor begins to crack during the massive joint invasion of the Leaf, forcing him into a savage, transformative duel with Naruto Uzumaki where he witnesses a fellow outcast who chose protection over murder.

Supporting / Gentle Heavyweight Anchor

The intensely loyal and deeply gentle heavyweight anchor of Team Ten who navigates a cloud of peer ridicule regarding his massive physical stature. Wielding the Akimichi clan's signature expansion jutsu, he converts calories directly into raw spiritual chakra to weaponize his body into a destructive kinetic boulder. While his baseline nature is fundamentally pacifistic, his inner core is forged during the desperate Sasuke retrieval campaign, where he consumes his family's forbidden three colored metabolic pills to protect his friends. The final red pill unlocks a spectacular spiritual metamorphosis, converting his entire physical fat reserves into massive chakra wings that allow him to crush foreign executors with a solitary, earth shattering strike.

Supporting / Weapon Scroll Specialist

The pragmatic, hyper focused kunoichi of Team Guy who completely lacks an elite mystical bloodline or inherited family technique, choosing instead to master the sophisticated art of physical space-time sealing. Utilizing complex geometric scrolls tucked inside her vest, she commands an unparalleled tactical arsenal, summoning hundreds of metal weapons, kunai, and specialized iron clubs to rain down upon her targets from mid air with absolute projectile precision. Her unyielding work ethic functions as the perfect logistical anchor to balance the theatrical antics of Rock Lee, demonstrating an elite baseline proficiency that respects the structural mechanics of traditional steel over cosmic lineage.

Supporting / Sand Puppet Operator

The iron willed middle sibling of the Hidden Sand vanguard who carries a heavily wrapped bundle on his back containing a arsenal of lethal, mechanized human scale puppets. Wielding microscopic chakra threads attached to his bare fingertips, he manipulates his wooden constructs from a safe distance, masking his personal coordinates while using gas bombs and hidden blades to execute swift ambushes. His baseline tactical philosophy dictates that a true shinobi never reveals his primary weapons or face until the moment of termination, a philosophy he executes with a rough, defensive arrogance to safeguard his fragile familial position alongside Gaara.

Supporting / Iron Fan Vanguard

The eldest of the Sand siblings and a fiercely confident, tactical vanguard who wields a massive, iron ribbed folding fan with devastating martial proficiency. Unlike her volatile younger brother Gaara, her combat methodology is exceptionally calculated, straightforward, and rooted in absolute aerodynamic dominance. She manipulates air currents to manifest slicing cyclones capable of leveling entire forest structures, utterly dismantling long range specialists with an icy composure. Beneath her arrogant, unsparing exterior lies a sharp military mind that respects raw tactical capability, a trait that surfaces during her high stakes Chunin Exam stadium duel against Shikamaru Nara.

Antagonist / The Harmless Operative

A soft spoken, silver haired intelligence operative who poses as a harmless, multi time failure of the Chunin selection trials to gather detailed data cards on the rookie candidates. Operating secretly as Orochimaru's absolute right hand and premier medical technician, his unassuming civilian facade masks a cold, calculating strategist with high level close quarters combat capabilities. He utilizes chakra scalpels to sever muscle tissue internally without breaking the skin, demonstrating a lethal proficiency that alarms even veteran Jonin. His presence introduces a layer of deep espionage to the exams, serving as the hidden anchor pulling the strings of the impending invasion.

Antagonist / Rogue Sannin Mastermind

The cold, serpentine master of forbidden arts who abandoned the Hidden Leaf years prior after his grotesque experiments on human subjects were exposed by the village hierarchy. Operating from a web of subterranean fortresses, his singular, monstrous obsession is to achieve absolute immortality by mastering every technique in existence, a quest that drives him to convert Sasuke Uchiha into his next physical vessel. He orchestrates a massive joint military campaign to incinerate his ancestral home, utilizing the forbidden Edo Tensei to resurrect dead kings to fight his old mentor. His terrifying presence embodies the absolute rot of unchecked ambition, a predator who trades in human souls and leaves a legacy of poison behind his fangs.

Antagonist / Phantom of the Bloodline

The legendary rogue shinobi who vanished into the criminal underworld after single handedly massacring his entire clan in a solitary night, leaving his younger brother alive purely to cultivate a legacy of hatred. When he returns to breach the village gates alongside the Akatsuki syndicate, he brings an unparalleled aura of absolute psychological terror. Moving with chilling, quiet precision, his mastery over the Mangekyo Sharingan allows him to disintegrate a veteran master's sanity in a fraction of a second. He stands as an insurmountable wall of absolute genius, a ghost from the past whose red eyes mock Sasuke's desperate training and remind the Hidden Leaf that their inner sanctuary is profoundly vulnerable.

Antagonist / Monster of the Hidden Mist

The towering, blue skinned rogue executioner from the Hidden Mist who operates within the active vanguard of the Akatsuki syndicate alongside Itachi Uchiha. Wielding the massive, flesh tearing Samehada, a sentient shark skinned sword that shreds through physical defenses and devours chakra rather than cutting with an edge, his presence brings a blunt, unsparing martial brutality to the battlefield. He maintains an unsettlingly cheerful composure during high stakes combat encounters, possessing a massive, beast like reservoir of baseline physical energy that allows him to flood dry terrain with colossal water tidal waves, easily trapping veteran defensive Jonin structures within liquid tombs.

Supporting / Aspiring Rival Novice

The boisterous, stubborn grandson of the Third Hokage who grows up deeply suffocated by the constant tracking of imperial bodyguards and a political hierarchy that only views him as a royal shadow. Initially targeting Naruto Uzumaki as a superficial rival, he is met with a blunt, unsparing fist that teaches him that true respect cannot be inherited through bloodlines or administrative titles. He adopts Naruto's unyielding philosophy as his personal blueprint, training diligently to master basic infiltration and transformation arts to step out from his grandfather's legacy and begin his own slow path toward the mantle of leadership.

Supporting / Forest of Death Proctor

The volatile, dangerously eccentric Special Jonin who commands the grueling second phase of the Chunin selection trials inside the terrifying ecosystems of the Forest of Death. As the historical former pupil of Orochimaru, her hyperactive, sadistic public persona serves as a fragile mask to contain the lingering trauma of her childhood abandonment and the parasitic curse mark burning beneath her shoulder. She moves with a feral, unpredictable velocity, utilizing her family's signature hidden shadow snake arms to execute close quarters restraints. Her presence injects a layer of deep atmospheric dread into the exams, serving as the first line of defense when her old master breaches the perimeter.

Mentor / The Third Hokage

The aging supreme administrative and military commander of the Hidden Leaf, venerated across foreign borders as the Professor due to his legendary mastery over every combat discipline developed within the village gates. He governs with a gentle, paternal philosophy that views every resident as a individual member of an extended family, a view that faces its ultimate fire during the massive joint invasion of his rogue pupil. He summons the mythic Monkey King Enma to engage Orochimaru in a brutal close quarters duel atop a roof, sacrificing his remaining physical life force to execute the forbidden Reaper Death Seal to permanently cripple the mastermind's capability.

Supporting / Feral Beast Tracker

A boisterous, aggressively confident Genin from the Inuzuka clan who relies on hyper acute canine senses and a wild, beast mimicking combat methodology to overwhelm his targets. Operating in absolute, seamless physical lockstep with his loyal white ninken companion, Akamaru, he uses military rations pills to trigger high speed, feral physical transformations. He uncoils the ferocious Fang Over Fang technique, transforming man and beast into twin kinetic drill vectors that tear through solid defenses. His loud, boastful exterior hides a stubborn martial pride, a trait pushed to its breaking point when Naruto Uzumaki matches his animalistic velocity through pure, unyielding improvisation inside the stadium wires.

Supporting / Chilling Insect Host

A deeply stoic, hyper analytical Genin who operates as a living hive for the Aburame clan's parasitic kikaichu insects, which inhabit his physical body and consume chakra as sustenance. Concealed behind dark spectacles and a high collar coat, his demeanor is defined by a chilling, quiet patience and a habit of speaking in complete, mathematically precise logical clauses. He treats combat as a meticulous tactical containment problem, utilizing silent swarms of beetles to drain an opponent's spiritual reserves from the blind spots without ever revealing his personal position. His absolute composure under fire paralyzes erratic brawlers, turning his quiet surveillance into a terminal trap long before a blow is thrown.

Mentor / The Toad Sage

One of the Hidden Leaf's legendary Legendary Sannin and a boisterous, unapologetically eccentric novelist who assumes operational mentorship over Naruto Uzumaki. Operating beneath a thin veneer of hyperactive, perverted baseline antics, Jiraiya is a master-class shinobi tactician and intelligence operative who spent years tracking Orochimaru's hidden networks. He unlocks Naruto's core potential by breaking Orochimaru's sealing matrix, teaching him the high-output Rasengan, and forcing him to draw directly upon the Nine-Tails' massive crimson chakra pool, serving as the definitive paternal anchor of the kid's mid-series evolution.

Mentor / The Fifth Hokage

The premier medical ninja in history, granddaughter of the First Hokage, and the lone female member of the Legendary Sannin. Shattered by decades of psychological trauma following the violent deaths of her brother and lover, she wanders the minor frontier territories as a cynical, high-stakes gambler before Naruto's unyielding conviction shatters her emotional paralysis. Stepping up as the Fifth Hokage, she brings elite structural stabilization to the Leaf command layer, utilizing her monstrous physical strength and high-output Mitotic Regeneration chakra storage grids to safeguard the village.
