After too many lost cats and village chores, Naruto complains his way into Team 7's first C-rank mission: escort the bridge builder Tazuna home to the Land of Waves. The job stops looking routine when the Demon Brothers ambush them and Naruto freezes while Sasuke and Kakashi respond like actual shinobi. Humiliated and poisoned, Naruto drives a kunai into his own hand to bleed the poison out and swears he will never freeze like that again. Tazuna has clearly hidden how dangerous this mission really is.
Tazuna finally admits why enemy ninja are after him: the shipping magnate Gato has strangled the Land of Waves economically, and the bridge Tazuna is building could break that control. Team 7 chooses to continue despite the mission being far more dangerous than advertised. Their next attacker is no disposable thug. Zabuza Momochi, the Demon of the Hidden Mist, comes for Tazuna and forces Kakashi to uncover the Sharingan.
Kakashi initially matches Zabuza, but the fight turns when Zabuza traps him inside the Water Prison and sends a water clone after the rest of Team 7. Kakashi tells the kids to take Tazuna and run. Naruto nearly does, until the wound in his hand reminds him of the promise he just made. He and Sasuke improvise a transformation-and-shuriken attack that forces Zabuza to release the prison and gets Kakashi back into the fight.
Freed from the Water Prison, Kakashi turns the battle completely around by using the Sharingan to read and copy Zabuza's techniques almost as quickly as he can perform them. Zabuza is beaten, only for a masked hunter-nin to appear and seemingly kill him with senbon before taking the body away. Naruto cannot stand how easily someone near his own age apparently finished a fight he could barely survive. Kakashi collapses from overusing the Sharingan, and the victory immediately starts looking suspicious.
Recovering at Tazuna's house, Kakashi realizes the masked hunter-nin did not dispose of Zabuza's body the way a real hunter would. Zabuza is almost certainly alive, which means Team 7 needs to improve before the rematch. Kakashi starts with chakra control and gives Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura a deceptively simple exercise: climb a tree without using their hands. Sakura gets it first while Naruto and Sasuke turn training into another competition.
Naruto and Sasuke grind through tree-climbing training while Sakura travels into town with Tazuna and sees what Gato's control has done to the Land of Waves. At home, Tazuna's grandson Inari mocks Naruto's talk about courage and heroes because he has already watched the man he believed in, Kaiza, executed by Gato. Naruto refuses to accept Inari's surrender and promises to prove that giving up is not the only answer.
Naruto finishes his tree-climbing training and meets a gentle stranger in the woods gathering herbs. The stranger tells him that people become truly strong when they have someone precious to protect, a thought Naruto understands even before he knows who he is talking to. The next morning Team 7 reaches the bridge and finds Zabuza waiting exactly as Kakashi predicted. Beside him is the same masked shinobi who carried him away.
The rematch splits into two fights: Kakashi faces Zabuza again while Sasuke takes on the masked shinobi, Haku. Sasuke's speed surprises Haku at first, but Haku answers with his kekkei genkai, forming a prison of Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals around him. From inside the mirrors Haku can attack from every direction faster than Sasuke can track, turning the bridge into a fight Sasuke cannot simply outpace.
Naruto finally reaches the bridge and makes the most Naruto entrance possible, loudly announcing himself while Kakashi begs him to think before moving. Instead of helping Sasuke from outside Haku's ice mirrors, Naruto charges directly into the trap and gets sealed inside with him. Haku tears through Naruto's Shadow Clones and keeps both boys pinned down, but being trapped together also forces Naruto and Sasuke to start fighting like teammates instead of rivals.
Zabuza covers the bridge in dense mist and changes tactics, attacking without giving Kakashi's Sharingan a clean view of him. Inside Haku's mirrors, Naruto and Sasuke continue taking punishment while Sasuke begins adjusting to Haku's impossible speed. The two battles become tests of experience: Kakashi is fighting an assassin who learned from their first encounter, while Sasuke is trying to develop fast enough to survive an opponent who has spent years fighting beside Zabuza.
Sasuke's eyes begin to change under pressure, giving him just enough Sharingan perception to start reading Haku's movement between the mirrors. Haku realizes that if the fight continues Sasuke may eventually catch up, so he decides to finish it quickly. When Haku launches a killing attack at Naruto, Sasuke moves without thinking and takes the barrage himself. Naruto catches him as he falls and believes Sasuke has died protecting him.
Believing Sasuke is dead, Naruto's grief and rage crack open the power sealed inside him. Nine-Tails chakra floods out, healing his injuries and giving him enough speed and strength to smash through Haku's ice mirrors. Haku knows he has lost and asks Naruto to kill him, while memories of his childhood reveal how a feared bloodline left him alone until Zabuza gave him a purpose. Naruto hesitates because the enemy in front of him no longer feels like a monster.
Naruto cannot bring himself to kill Haku after hearing how completely he built his life around being useful to Zabuza. Across the bridge, Kakashi corners Zabuza with his ninja hounds and commits to ending the fight with the Lightning Blade. Haku senses the danger and abandons Naruto at the last instant, throwing himself between Kakashi and Zabuza. Haku dies protecting the person he chose as precious, while Kakashi immediately turns on the wounded Zabuza and destroys his ability to keep fighting.
Gato arrives with hired thugs, announces that Zabuza was always disposable, and insults Haku's body as if none of it mattered. Naruto finally breaks through Zabuza's insistence that shinobi are only tools, and the Demon of the Hidden Mist admits through tears that Haku mattered to him after all. With both arms ruined, Zabuza takes a kunai in his mouth and cuts through Gato's men to kill him before dying beside Haku. Inari returns with the people of the Land of Waves, the bridge is completed, and Tazuna names it the Great Naruto Bridge.

Back in Konoha after the Land of Waves, Naruto is already bored with routine missions when shinobi from other villages begin arriving for the Chunin Exams. The newcomers include the Sand siblings Temari, Kankuro, and Gaara, whose presence makes it clear this is bigger than another village test. Kakashi recommends all three members of Team 7 for the exam, opening the door to a much wider ninja world.
Iruka is furious that Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura have been recommended for the Chunin Exams so soon after graduating and questions whether Team 7 is ready. Kakashi stands by the decision, convinced the three have already been tested in ways most rookies have not. As the candidates gather, the rookie teams from Konoha meet rivals from across the villages and get their first real look at the competition.
On the way to register, Sasuke is challenged by Rock Lee, a genin whose bowl cut and eyebrows make him easy to underestimate right up until he starts moving. Sasuke's Sharingan can see Lee's taijutsu but cannot make his body keep up with it, and Lee nearly finishes him with the Primary Lotus before Might Guy intervenes. For Sasuke, it is an ugly reminder that simply being an Uchiha does not put him above everyone else.
Team 7 officially registers for the Chunin Exams and enters a room packed with genin from every major village. Kabuto Yakushi introduces himself as an experienced repeat applicant and uses his ninja info cards to size up competitors like Gaara and Rock Lee. Naruto responds to the pressure in the most Naruto way possible, loudly declaring that he will beat everyone in the room and instantly making himself a target.
The first exam begins under Ibiki Morino, Konoha's interrogation specialist, with a written test far beyond what most of the genin should reasonably know. The real challenge slowly becomes obvious: gather the answers by cheating without getting caught, using whatever ninja skills each team has available. Sakura can actually solve the questions, Sasuke figures out the trick, and Naruto sits there with a blank page and a growing problem.
Ibiki reveals the tenth question and attaches a brutal condition to it: anyone who attempts it and fails will supposedly lose the right to take the Chunin Exams again. Teams begin withdrawing rather than risk their futures, leaving Naruto with every reason to quit and none of the answers he needs. He refuses anyway, declaring he will become Hokage even if he remains a genin forever, and that refusal is the answer. Everyone who stayed passes the first exam.
Konohamaru, Moegi, and Udon arrive at the Chunin Exam site to cover the event for the Academy newspaper, turning the episode into a recap of Naruto's story so far. Through their interviews, the show revisits Team 7's formation, the Land of Waves, and the road that brought Naruto to the exams. There is new framing material, but this is fundamentally a catch-up episode before the Forest of Death begins.
Anko Mitarashi leads the surviving teams to the Forest of Death and explains the second exam: each squad receives either a Heaven or Earth Scroll, must steal the opposite scroll from another team, and reach the central tower with both within five days. Death is explicitly on the table. Team 7 enters the forest knowing that every other squad is now both competition and a possible source of the scroll they need.

Sasuke is so overwhelmed by the Grass ninja's killing intent that he considers surrendering their scroll just to survive. Naruto refuses, punches sense back into him, and attacks an opponent he has no realistic chance of beating. As Naruto's anger rises, Nine-Tails chakra begins leaking out, forcing the enemy to take him seriously. The Grass ninja answers by sealing that power and leaving Naruto unconscious, putting the fight back on Sasuke.
Naruto's refusal to run snaps Sasuke out of his fear, and Sasuke finally turns his Sharingan and full firepower on the Grass ninja. He lands the Dragon Flame Jutsu and appears to corner the attacker, only to discover he has been fighting Orochimaru. Orochimaru marks Sasuke with the Cursed Seal and disappears, leaving him collapsed in agony with a promise that the seal will drive him toward power.
With Naruto and Sasuke unconscious, Sakura spends the night guarding them alone while Orochimaru's Sound genin close in. Rock Lee abandons his own team long enough to protect her, taking on Dosu, Zaku, and Kin by himself and using the Primary Lotus against Dosu. The attack fails, Lee is beaten down, and Sakura is left facing the Sound trio with no one else standing between them and her teammates.
Sakura finally reaches the point where waiting for someone stronger to save her is no longer acceptable. She cuts her own hair to escape Kin's grip and throws herself into a brutal fight against the Sound genin despite knowing she is outmatched. Lee's earlier promise and her frustration with always standing behind Naruto and Sasuke push her forward. By the time help arrives, Sakura has already proven the important part to herself: she can stand and fight.
Ino watches Sakura getting torn apart and can no longer pretend their old rivalry matters more than what is happening in front of her. Team 10 joins the fight, bringing the Ino-Shika-Cho formation into the field for the first time as Shikamaru, Choji, and Ino combine their clan techniques against the Sound trio. The battle turns again when Sasuke finally wakes and the Cursed Seal begins changing him.
Sasuke wakes under the influence of Orochimaru's Cursed Seal and terrifies everyone around him, brutally punishing Zaku until Sakura's embrace brings him back to himself. The Sound team retreats rather than keep fighting him. Elsewhere, Team 8 remembers crossing paths with Gaara, whose effortless slaughter of another team leaves Akamaru shaking. The Forest of Death now has more than one person everyone should be afraid of.
Team 7 has only one day left and still needs the second scroll, which leads Naruto to suggest opening the scroll they already have and trying to forge the other one. Kabuto stops them before they trigger the trap hidden inside and offers to travel with them toward the tower. The shortcut is gone, so Team 7 still has to win the scroll they need the hard way.
Team 7 and Kabuto are caught in a genjutsu laid by the Hidden Rain team and keep walking through the same stretch of forest while their strength drains away. Naruto wastes energy attacking endless clones until the group realizes brute force is exactly what the enemy wants. Team 7 finally turns the trap around, defeats the real Rain genin, and secures the second scroll needed to finish the exam.
Team 7 reaches the central tower and opens both scrolls, summoning Iruka, who confirms that they passed the Forest of Death. The surviving rookie teams reunite after five days of fighting, and the number of successful candidates is still far too high for the exam to move directly to the finals. The Third Hokage and exam officials prepare one more cut: immediate one-on-one preliminary matches.
Twenty-one genin remain, so the Third Hokage explains the political purpose behind the Chunin Exams before Hayate announces sudden-death preliminaries. Kabuto withdraws before the fights begin, leaving twenty competitors and ten matches. The first name on the board is Sasuke Uchiha, who has to fight Yoroi while still dealing with the Cursed Seal Orochimaru left on him.
Sasuke faces Yoroi with strict orders from Kakashi not to use chakra, because activating the Cursed Seal could let it consume him. Yoroi makes that almost impossible by draining chakra on contact and slowly wearing him down. With his usual weapons limited, Sasuke borrows the movement he saw from Rock Lee and creates the Lion's Barrage on the spot, winning the first preliminary without relying on the seal.
Kakashi takes Sasuke away after the match and applies the Evil Sealing Method to suppress Orochimaru's Cursed Seal, only for Orochimaru himself to appear and make his interest in Sasuke explicit. Kakashi threatens him anyway, even while knowing how dangerous that fight would be. Back in the arena, Shino faces Zaku and turns the Sound ninja's arm cannons against him by secretly blocking the vents with insects.
Kankuro faces Misumi and lets the Sound ninja believe he has twisted his body into submission, only to reveal that Misumi has been grappling with the puppet Crow. Kankuro ends the match quickly once the trick is exposed. The next draw puts Sakura against Ino, turning a childhood friendship and years of rivalry into the first preliminary where neither fighter has an obvious physical advantage.
Sakura and Ino fight to a standstill while memories of their childhood explain how admiration, rivalry, and Sasuke pulled the two friends apart. Ino finally catches Sakura with the Mind Transfer Jutsu and tries to force her to surrender from inside her own body. Sakura's refusal is strong enough to push Ino back out, and both girls exhaust themselves in one final exchange that ends with neither able to continue.
The preliminaries continue with two very different demonstrations of how specialized these genin already are. Temari completely dismantles Tenten's weapon-heavy style with her fan, then Shikamaru faces Kin and turns her own wires, bells, and attention against her with the Shadow Possession Jutsu. What looks like laziness from Shikamaru becomes obviously dangerous the moment he has enough information to build a plan.
Naruto draws Kiba and Akamaru, and Kiba enters the match convinced he got one of the easiest opponents left. Kiba's speed, sense of smell, and Beast Human Transformation keep Naruto under pressure, but Naruto uses Shadow Clones and transformations to confuse him and stay in the fight. Food Pills push Kiba and Akamaru even harder, forcing Naruto to find a way around an opponent who can track him by scent.
Kiba's nose is supposed to make deception impossible, so Naruto attacks the sense itself, using transformations and Kiba's own expectations against him. Then the fight is decided by the least dignified weapon in the Chunin Exams: Naruto accidentally passes gas directly in front of Kiba's hypersensitive nose. With Kiba stunned, Naruto unveils the Naruto Uzumaki Barrage and wins a match almost everyone expected him to lose.
The next preliminary puts Hinata against Neji, two Hyuga cousins carrying the weight of the clan's main and branch families into the same ring. Neji attacks her confidence before he attacks her body, insisting that people cannot escape the roles they are born into. Naruto's encouragement gets Hinata to stand her ground, and the timid girl everyone expects to fold activates her Byakugan and chooses to fight him anyway.
Neji's Gentle Fist shuts down Hinata's chakra network piece by piece, but she keeps standing long after the match has become dangerous. Naruto's refusal to give up has become something she can borrow when her own courage starts failing. Neji finally moves to kill her and has to be stopped by the jonin. Naruto sees Hinata's blood on his hand and swears that he will defeat Neji in the finals.
Rock Lee finally gets the opponent he has been waiting for in Gaara, whose automatic sand defense makes ordinary taijutsu look useless. Guy gives Lee permission to remove the training weights from his legs, and the entire arena learns how much speed Lee has been carrying around in reserve. For the first time, Gaara is forced backward and his supposedly untouchable defense starts getting hit.
Lee uses the Primary Lotus on Gaara, only to discover that the body he smashed was protected by a shell of sand. The technique leaves Lee exhausted and exposed while Gaara remains frighteningly composed. With ordinary taijutsu no longer enough, Guy gives Lee permission to open the Inner Gates and use the far more dangerous Hidden Lotus.
Lee opens five of the Eight Inner Gates and attacks Gaara at a speed almost no one in the arena can follow. The Hidden Lotus tears through Gaara's defenses, but Gaara survives by cushioning the final impact with sand and then crushes Lee's arm and leg. Guy stops Gaara from finishing him. Even unconscious and broken, Lee's body tries to rise when the match is called, because standing back up has become that deeply wired into him.
Choji faces Dosu in the final preliminary and loses quickly when the Sound ninja bypasses his Human Boulder with a sound-based attack. With the field finally narrowed, the Third Hokage explains the one-month break before the finals and the remaining competitors draw their matchups. Away from the arena, Orochimaru and Kabuto continue moving around Sasuke, making it clear the exam is now sitting on top of something much larger.
Kakashi hands Naruto's training over to Ebisu while he focuses on Sasuke, and Naruto is insulted until Ebisu immediately exposes how poor his chakra control still is. Water-walking becomes the next exercise, and Naruto starts improving faster than Ebisu expects. Their session ends when they catch a white-haired man spying on the women's bath, and Ebisu is promptly knocked out by the stranger's summoned toad.
The stranger introduces himself as Jiraiya, one of the Legendary Sannin, although Naruto is much more interested in calling him the Pervy Sage. Naruto pesters him into taking over the training, and Jiraiya quickly realizes Orochimaru placed an additional seal on Naruto during the Forest of Death. Removing the Five Elements Seal fixes the disruption in Naruto's chakra control and finally gives him a fair shot at learning properly.
Jiraiya teaches Naruto the Summoning Jutsu and discovers that ordinary chakra only produces tiny, useless tadpoles. The real target is the Nine-Tails chakra buried inside him, so Jiraiya starts pushing Naruto toward the conditions that make that power surface. Meanwhile, Hayate overhears Kabuto and Baki discussing the planned invasion of Konoha, learns too much, and is killed before he can report it.
Naruto keeps grinding away at the Summoning Jutsu while Sakura and Ino visit the hospital and discover Sasuke has disappeared to train with Kakashi. Elsewhere, Sakura visits Rock Lee and begins to understand how badly Gaara damaged him. The month between the preliminaries and finals is almost over, with every surviving competitor preparing in a different way for what comes next.
Naruto still cannot summon anything larger than a tadpole, so Jiraiya decides the only way to force out the Nine-Tails chakra is to make Naruto believe his life is genuinely in danger. He throws Naruto into a deep ravine and leaves him to either access the fox's power or die. Cornered inside his own mind, Naruto finally confronts the Nine-Tails directly and demands chakra in exchange for continuing to serve as its container.
Naruto uses the Nine-Tails chakra and summons Gamabunta, the enormous chief toad, but summoning him turns out to be easier than convincing him Naruto did it. Gamabunta refuses to recognize a kid as his summoner and challenges Naruto to stay on his back until sunset. Naruto hangs on through everything the toad throws at him and finally earns a measure of respect before collapsing from exhaustion.
Naruto wakes in the hospital after three days unconscious from his training, with the Chunin Exam finals almost here. Shikamaru visits and the two stumble into Gaara's attempt to attack the injured Rock Lee, forcing them to confront how little they understand about him. Gaara's childhood and the fear surrounding the One-Tail begin to explain why he treats killing as proof that he exists, until Guy arrives and ends the confrontation.
Naruto is late for the finals and makes the mistake of accepting Konohamaru's help getting to the arena. A series of terrible shortcuts turns what should be a simple trip across the village into a race against the clock. Naruto finally reaches the stadium in time, where Neji is already waiting for the first match of the finals.
The Chunin Exam finals begin with Naruto against Neji. Naruto floods the arena with Shadow Clones, but Neji's Byakugan lets him identify and dismantle attacks from every direction while his Gentle Fist targets Naruto's chakra network directly. The fight quickly becomes the argument they have been building toward since Hinata's match: Neji insists fate is fixed, and Naruto refuses to accept that anyone is trapped by what they were born as.
Neji unveils the Rotation and Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms, shutting down Naruto's chakra points and apparently ending the fight. He explains the Hyuga branch family's curse mark and the death of his father, using his own life as proof that fate cannot be escaped. Naruto hears the story and still rejects the conclusion, promising to beat Neji precisely because he knows what it is like to be judged by something decided at birth.
With his normal chakra network blocked, Naruto reaches for the Nine-Tails and forces enough power through his body to keep fighting. He overwhelms Neji's assumptions, then uses a Shadow Clone as a decoy while tunneling underground and landing the final uppercut from below. Naruto wins. After the match, Hiashi gives Neji the truth about his father's death, beginning to loosen the hatred the branch-family story built inside him.
Naruto's win throws the planned order of the finals into confusion because Sasuke still has not arrived. Kankuro withdraws rather than reveal his techniques before the Sand's larger plan, leaving Shikamaru and Temari as the next match. Shikamaru would rather be anywhere else, but he walks into the arena anyway while everyone waits to see whether Sasuke will show.
Shikamaru spends most of his match with Temari looking like he wants to surrender, all while quietly mapping the arena, the sun, her attack range, and every shadow available to him. He eventually traps her with the Shadow Possession Jutsu and proves he had a winning plan. Then he forfeits because he has calculated that he does not have enough chakra to finish the fight. It is the most Shikamaru victory imaginable even though the record says he lost.
The arena waits for Sasuke while Gaara's patience frays and the officials come close to disqualifying him. Kakashi and Sasuke finally arrive at the last possible moment, and the long-delayed match begins. Sasuke immediately shocks everyone by matching Rock Lee's speed closely enough to get through Gaara's automatic sand defense, forcing Gaara to retreat behind an increasingly desperate shell.
Sasuke's month with Kakashi shows immediately: he has copied the high-speed taijutsu he saw from Rock Lee and can finally hit Gaara through the sand. Gaara seals himself inside a sphere of sand and begins preparing something inside it, while Temari and Kankuro grow increasingly nervous about what their brother is becoming. Sasuke takes to the wall and begins charging the technique Kakashi spent the month teaching him.
Sasuke unleashes Chidori and punches through Gaara's sand barrier, drawing blood from him for the first time and destabilizing him completely. The injury interrupts the Sand's timetable, but the invasion plan cannot wait any longer. Genjutsu drops over the stadium, the disguised Kazekage takes the Third Hokage hostage, and the Chunin Exams collapse into the opening move of Orochimaru's attack on Konoha.

The invasion begins in full. Sand and Sound shinobi pour into Konoha while the Four Violet Flames Formation seals the Third Hokage on the roof with Orochimaru, keeping the ANBU outside. Kakashi and Guy cut through attackers in the stadium as Sasuke chases after Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro. The Chunin Exams are over now; this is a war inside the village.
With Sasuke already pursuing the Sand siblings, Kakashi wakes Sakura from the stadium genjutsu and sends her after him with Naruto, Shikamaru, and Pakkun. The new mission is simple on paper and ugly in practice: catch Sasuke before he reaches Gaara alone. As they move through the forest, a squad of Sound ninja picks up their trail and starts closing in from behind.
Nine Sound ninja are gaining on Naruto's group, and Shikamaru knows they cannot outrun them while still catching Sasuke. He stays behind alone, using the forest and Shadow Possession Jutsu to trap the pursuers and buy everyone else time. For once the self-proclaimed coward chooses the job nobody wants, fully aware that if his plan fails there may be no one coming back for him.
Orochimaru begins his real battle with the Third Hokage and raises the First and Second Hokage with the Reanimation Jutsu. Hiruzen is suddenly fighting his own teachers while the barrier keeps Konoha's strongest backup outside. The scale changes instantly: Wood Style, Water Style, and Enma enter the fight, and the old Hokage has to face both the village's past and the student he once failed to stop.
The rooftop battle forces Hiruzen to remember the moment he discovered Orochimaru's human experiments and still let his former student escape. In the present, the First and Second Hokage keep pressing him while Orochimaru treats the entire fight like proof that age has finally caught his teacher. Hiruzen realizes there is no clean way out of this battle and begins preparing the technique meant to end it.
Hiruzen summons the Reaper and uses the Reaper Death Seal against the First and Second Hokage, tearing their souls out of the bodies Orochimaru reanimated. Outside the village, Sasuke catches Kankuro and Gaara's group, but Shino arrives to take Kankuro off his hands so Sasuke can keep chasing Gaara. Both fronts narrow at once: Hiruzen is gambling his life on one forbidden technique, and Sasuke is finally closing on the opponent he followed out of the arena.
Hiruzen turns the Reaper Death Seal on Orochimaru himself, but extracting his former student's soul is far harder than sealing the reanimated Hokage. In the forest, Sasuke catches Gaara and sees the transformation the Chidori wound started in the stadium continue across Gaara's body. The fight Sasuke wanted at the finals is gone; what stands in front of him now is something much closer to the monster inside Gaara.

Konoha is still recovering from the invasion when two strangers in black cloaks arrive looking for Naruto. Asuma and Kurenai confront them and discover they are Akatsuki members: Kisame Hoshigaki and Itachi Uchiha, Sasuke's older brother. The fight barely starts before Itachi's calm control of the Sharingan makes it obvious these are enemies on an entirely different level.
Kakashi joins Asuma and Kurenai against Itachi and Kisame, but even his Sharingan cannot protect him from Itachi's Mangekyo Sharingan. Tsukuyomi traps Kakashi in a private nightmare where seconds outside become days of torture inside, leaving him collapsed and helpless. Two men kidnap Naruto and try to use him as leverage to collect what she owes, only to discover that abducting Naruto creates far more trouble than it solves. It is a light detour before Tsunade returns to the village and takes up the job waiting for her.
Tsunade returns to Konoha and immediately begins dealing with the damage left by the invasion, including the shinobi still lying in hospital beds. Her medical ninjutsu brings Kakashi and Sasuke out of the comas Itachi left them in, but Rock Lee's injuries are much harder to solve. Tsunade gives Lee the truth: surgery may let him become a ninja again, but the operation is dangerous enough that failure could kill him.
As Konoha prepares to recognize Tsunade as the Fifth Hokage, Konohamaru struggles with the idea that someone is taking the place his grandfather once held. Naruto chases after him and tries to make him understand that accepting a new Hokage does not erase the Third. Tsunade's arrival closes one era of the village and begins another while Hiruzen's family is still learning how to live with the loss.
Rock Lee is forced to decide whether the chance to be a ninja again is worth a surgery that could kill him. Memories of his failures, his training, and Guy's absolute belief in him bring the question back to the promise at the center of their relationship: Lee was never going to stop trying to prove he could become a splendid ninja. Shikamaru studies how Jirobo maintains the barrier instead of wasting strength, while the Sound Four keep moving with Sasuke.
Still trapped inside Jirobo's chakra-draining dome, the team begins to weaken and tempers turn on Shikamaru's leadership.
