October: Slowing Down Without Going Quiet.
I wanted to leave a quick webmaster note for October, because I'm changing gears for a few weeks.AnimeHistory has been moving at a ridiculous pace lately. The gallery is closing in on 870,000 images across fifty series and a growing movie shelf, character pages have been getting cleaned up, Lore keeps expanding, old fansub history is being reconstructed, reviews are going up, and somewhere in the middle of all that I apparently decided the site also needed stickers. 😛 It's been a lot of fun. It's also been a lot.
So for October, I'm giving myself a bit of breathing room. That doesn't mean the site is going quiet. I've already written and scheduled reviews for the whole month, so new things will keep landing on the front page while I take my foot off the content pedal.
More watching, less racing
One of the weird things about building a site like this is that you can spend so much time cataloguing anime that you forget you're supposed to actually sit down and enjoy it. I want a little more of that back. October is partly about throwing something on, making some screencaps, digging through an old release, chasing a weird piece of fansub history because it interests me, or just watching an episode without immediately turning it into another checklist item. Maybe even relaxing occasionally. We'll see how that goes. 😛I'm also using the quieter month to focus on the data side of AnimeHistory. There are still plenty of small inconsistencies, old records, missing connections, tags and quality-of-life fixes that aren't flashy enough for homepage news, but make the archive much better once they're done. Right now, that work is worth more than adding another mountain of pages just because I can.
The screencap problem 😛
The gallery is enormous now, which is great. The slightly terrifying part is that an enormous gallery means an enormous number of images that still need context. Character tagging is one of the biggest jobs left, and while the admin tools make managing it possible, there is a huge amount of tagging still waiting to be done. This is one area where I genuinely need help. If you're browsing an episode gallery and recognize the characters in a shot, tagging them helps more than you'd think. Those tags build better character galleries, improve browsing and connect the archive together, turning all those screencaps into something far more useful than a giant folder of pretty JPEGs. I'm planning to keep improving the tagging tools too. If I'm asking people to help tag a ridiculous number of images, the least I can do is make it quick and painless.
The new sticker system comes from the same idea. AnimeHistory is an archive, but I don't want it to feel like a museum where everyone has to whisper. Stickers, comments, shouts, profiles and the forums are what make the place feel alive, so this month I'll probably spend more time polishing previews, posting tools and gallery interactions than launching giant new sections. Small changes on their own, but together they make the site a lot nicer to actually use. AnimeHistory has grown far beyond what I expected when I started rebuilding it, and I don't want that growth to turn it into another job. I'd rather spend a month cleaning up, enjoying the collection and making the site better underneath than burn out trying to publish something enormous every three days. There's already plenty here to explore for a while anyway. 😄
And if you feel like helping while I'm hiding in the database...
Go tag some screencaps. Seriously. Please. There are so many. ❤️
