Samurai Champloo

サムライチャンプルー
2004 –2005 Manglobe Fuji TV 26 episodes Completed
Action Adventure Historical Hip-Hop
Details & Synopsis
Fuu is a clumsy teahouse waitress who saves two master swordsmen from execution — Mugen, a wild brawler whose fighting style is pure breakdancing chaos, and Jin, a stoic ronin of ice-cold precision. In exchange she recruits them to help her find the mysterious "samurai who smells of sunflowers." What follows is a road trip across Edo-period Japan that has absolutely no business being this cool.

Directed by Shinichiro Watanabe — the same man behind Cowboy Bebop — Samurai Champloo blends feudal Japan with hip-hop in a way that should not work and absolutely does. The soundtrack by Nujabes and Fat Jon is legendary. The fight choreography is some of the best in anime history. The three leads are one of the greatest character trios ever put to screen.

26 episodes. No filler. A near-perfect run.
