Details & Synopsis
Lelouch vi Britannia is seventeenth in line to the throne of the Holy Britannian Empire, exiled to Japan, now called Area 11, a conquered territory with no rights and no name, following his mother's assassination and his sister's crippling. He attends school, plays chess for money, and waits.

Then a mysterious girl named C.C. gives him the Geass: the absolute power to command anyone to do anything, once, through direct eye contact. He puts on a mask. He calls himself Zero. He tells himself he is doing it to destroy Britannia.

He might even be right.

Produced by Sunrise and directed by Goro Taniguchi, who made s-CRY-ed five years earlier and clearly spent the intervening time thinking about political violence and what it costs, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion aired on MBS from 2006 to 2008. Fifty episodes across two seasons built around a chess match played in real time between a revolutionary who cannot stop lying and a childhood friend who joined the empire to reform it. The show understands that both positions are correct and neither of them will survive being correct.

The plot moves. This is the understatement of the decade. Code Geass was downloaded faster than most fansub groups could release it because no one watching it was willing to wait a week between episodes. The cliffhangers are not cheap, they are the load-bearing structure of a narrative that never stops accelerating. The Knightmare Frame battles are spectacular. The political maneuvering is genuinely intricate. The character work earns what it asks of you.

The ending of R2 is one of the most argued finales in anime history. It is also the correct ending. This is not up for debate.

Zero Requiem

Lelouch Takes Britannia So the World Has One Enemy

SPOILER!

Turn 22 · 99th Emperor

After Charles is gone, Lelouch does not dismantle Britannia and retire. He takes the throne, breaks the old aristocratic order, seizes control of the empire, and then deliberately makes himself the center of global hatred. The cruelty is part of the design. If every surviving faction can agree on one tyrant, his removal can become a shared beginning instead of another victory for one side.

Suzaku's Punishment Is to Survive as Zero

SPOILER! Zero Requiem · Identity Becomes Duty
Suzaku spends much of the series treating death as atonement. Zero Requiem denies him that escape. Officially Suzaku dies in the final war; in reality he inherits the Zero mask and must live as the symbol protecting the peace Lelouch creates. Lelouch takes the death Suzaku wanted, while Suzaku receives the life sentence Lelouch's Geass had been forcing on him since R1.

The World Watches Zero Kill Lelouch

SPOILER!

Turn 25 · The Parade

Lelouch stages his victory parade with political prisoners displayed beneath him, concentrating the world's anger into one public image. Suzaku appears as Zero and kills him in front of the crowd. Because the assassination is visible and symbolic, Zero instantly changes from the face of rebellion into the person who ended the Demon Emperor.

Nunnally Understands Too Late

SPOILER!

Turn 25 · Lelouch's Hand

Nunnally reaches Lelouch as he is dying and realizes what he and Suzaku arranged. The moment matters because Lelouch never receives the peaceful life with his sister that originally justified his rebellion. He creates the possibility of that world for her by removing himself from it.

Zero Requiem Does Not Erase the Damage

A Shared Beginning, Not a Magical Reset

The ending does not claim one assassination magically fixes racism, empire, grief, or every political conflict. What Lelouch creates is breathing room: Britannia's old order is broken, Schneizel is bound to serve Zero, the major powers have survived a common enemy, and the Black Knights can protect a peace that no longer depends on Lelouch commanding everything. The plan works because he finally builds an ending designed to continue without him.

The Mask Outlives the Man

SPOILER!

Zero After Lelouch

Zero began as a disguise that let Lelouch act without exposing himself. By the finale the identity belongs to the world instead. Suzaku can wear the mask because people no longer need Zero to be Lelouch; they need Zero to represent resistance to tyranny. That transformation is the cleanest measure of how far the rebellion moved beyond the boy who invented it.
