Yota Moteuchi has spent so long being unlucky in love that his classmates have given him an unflattering nickname for it. He is in love with Moemi Hayakawa, but Moemi confides that she loves Yota's best friend Takashi Niimai instead. Heartbroken, Yota wanders into the mysterious Gokuraku video store and rents a tape promising a girl who will comfort him. When he plays it through his damaged VCR, Ai Amano literally climbs out of the television.

Ai is supposed to stay only long enough to help Yota recover, but the broken machine that played her tape has altered her. She is rougher, more independent and capable of developing feelings a Video Girl was never meant to have. As Yota keeps trying to help Moemi reach Takashi, Ai becomes the person who understands his pain most clearly, and the assignment she was created to complete turns into a relationship neither of them knows how to handle.

I.G Tatsunoko's six-episode 1992 OVA adapts the opening portion of Masakazu Katsura's manga but gives the material its own compact ending. The result is a melancholy romantic story about projection, rejection and the difference between being created to comfort someone and choosing to love them.

Yota Moteuchi is crushed when Moemi Hayakawa admits that she loves his best friend Takashi Niimai, leaving Yota to hide his own feelings and encourage hers. He stumbles into the mysterious Gokuraku video store and rents a tape featuring a girl named Ai Amano who promises to comfort the viewer. Played through Yota's malfunctioning VCR, the tape produces an impossible result: Ai climbs out of the television and announces that she will stay with him. The damaged machine has also changed her personality, making this Video Girl much less predictable than her recording suggests.

Ai follows Yota to school and begins inserting herself into the ordinary life she was only supposed to observe from the television. Moemi asks Yota to help her get closer to Takashi, and Yota agrees even though every step hurts him. Back at Yota's house, Ai tries to cook for him just as Moemi also arrives, turning a simple act of care into another reminder of the triangle surrounding him. Ai starts to understand that cheering Yota up may be harder than simply giving him what he says he wants.

Yota gives Ai new clothes and the two go out together, giving Ai her first experience of a date that belongs to her rather than to the role programmed into her tape. Their day becomes awkward when they encounter Moemi and Takashi, forcing Yota's unresolved feelings back into the open. Ai's own reactions are becoming increasingly personal, and the damaged VCR connection begins causing worrying glitches in her body. What started as a temporary assignment is becoming something neither Ai nor Yota can keep emotionally simple.

Moemi prepares to confess her feelings to Takashi and relies on Yota for support even though he is the person most hurt by the plan. Ai's jealousy becomes harder to disguise as she watches Yota keep sacrificing his own happiness for Moemi. The confession finally reaches Takashi and changes the balance among all four of them. For Ai, the result makes an uncomfortable truth unavoidable: she no longer wants only to help Yota get over someone else.
005 Ai Disappears! Aired Jul 24, 1992 canon ►
Moemi and Takashi begin dating, leaving Yota to force himself forward by pouring his energy into a picture-book project. Ai tries to support him, but the instability caused by her damaged playback grows worse and she begins collapsing and fading. Her fear is no longer abstract; she realizes she may disappear before either of them can decide what their relationship has become. The Video Girl who was sent to mend Yota's heartbreak now faces the possibility of being erased because she developed feelings of her own.

Ai is taken away, and Yota refuses to accept that the person who changed his life can simply vanish back into the system that created her. His search pulls him into the Video World, where illusions of Takashi and Moemi force him to confront the attachments and insecurities he has been carrying since the beginning. Reaching Ai requires Yota to endure a surreal trial that strips away the comforting fantasy of what he thought he wanted. The OVA closes by choosing the bond Yota and Ai actually built over the roles other people assigned to them.

Yota loves Moemi but agrees to support her pursuit of Takashi, burying his own disappointment until Ai enters his life. His instinct to sacrifice his feelings for everyone else is both his kindness and the habit the OVA gradually forces him to confront.
