Details & Synopsis
Gene Starwind and Jim Hawking make a living taking whatever jobs will pay on the backwater planet Sentinel III. A routine bodyguard assignment destroys that routine when their client turns out to be the outlaw Hilda and the cargo she is protecting is a mysterious young woman named Melfina. Within days Gene has angry pirates chasing him, a cutting-edge starship in his possession and a destination he barely understands: the Galactic Leyline.

The ship becomes the Outlaw Star and the crew grows around it. Aisha Clanclan brings Ctarl-Ctarl strength and absolutely no volume control. Twilight Suzuka joins with a wooden sword and her own reasons for hunting the Kei Pirates. Melfina, created to interface with the ship, is both the key to reaching the Leyline and a person trying to understand why she exists. Gene keeps insisting he is in control while increasingly obvious evidence suggests otherwise.

Outlaw Star shares the late-1990s space-western moment with Cowboy Bebop, but its energy is different. It is louder, stranger and more openly adventurous, mixing gunfights, grappler-ship duels, Tao magic, bounty work and comedy without giving up the mystery driving Melfina and the Leyline.

For many Western fans the defining encounter came through Toonami in 2001. Cartoon Network edited the television version heavily enough that the hot-springs episode was skipped entirely, while Bandai's home-video releases offered the uncut series. That broadcast-versus-home-video split is exactly the kind of Western anime history AnimeHistory exists to preserve.

001 Outlaw World Aired Jan 8, 1998
Gene Starwind and Jim Hawking make a living taking whatever jobs come through the door on Sentinel III, which is how a simple bodyguard contract turns their lives upside down. Their client "Rachel" is really the outlaw Hot Ice Hilda, and the men chasing her are Kei Pirates using Tao magic rather than ordinary guns. Gene and Jim survive the attack, but Hilda makes it clear she hired them because she needs useful people, not because she trusts them. The job ends with Jim hauling in a sealed container and the pair discovering Melfina asleep inside, turning a local freelance gig into something much bigger.
002 World of Desires Aired Jan 15, 1998
Melfina wakes with almost no idea who she is or why she was sealed away, while Hilda refuses to explain more than she absolutely has to. Gene, Jim, Hilda and Melfina escape Sentinel III aboard a small ship and reach Blue Heaven, the outlaw station where Hilda can regroup and repair the Horus. Swanzo introduces Gene to a world built around pirates, outlaws and the three great powers of space, while Jim tries to make Melfina feel like a person instead of cargo. Hilda's enemies are already waiting, however, and an ugly bar encounter with McCoy turns into another attack before the group can safely move on.
003 Into Burning Space Aired Jan 22, 1998
Gene and Hilda finish dealing with McCoy and race back into space before his people can trap them on Blue Heaven. Their escape becomes even stranger when they cross paths with Aisha Clanclan, a Ctarl-Ctarl officer whose pride turns a routine interception into a game of chicken and gets her punished when the Horus slips away. Hilda's planned rendezvous brings worse news: the Kei Pirates have murdered the allies she expected to meet. With the enemy closing in and nobody left to help, Hilda pushes forward toward Farfallus, where the other half of the treasure she stole is waiting.
004 When the Hot Ice Melts Aired Jan 29, 1998
At Farfallus, Hilda finally reveals what the Kei Pirates have been chasing: the XGP15A-II, an experimental grappler ship built around technology far beyond anything Gene has flown. Melfina can connect directly to its navigation system, making her and the ship pieces of the same mystery. The pirates arrive before anyone can settle into the discovery, forcing Gene, Jim and Melfina to launch the XGP while Hilda stays behind to keep their pursuers from taking it back. She dies ensuring their escape from the gravity well. Gene carries her forward the only way he can, naming the ship the Outlaw Star and taking responsibility for the crew she left behind.
005 The Beast Girl, Ready to Pounce! Aired Feb 5, 1998
Gene brings the newly named Outlaw Star back to Blue Heaven, where Swanzo repays an old debt to Hilda by helping register and outfit the ship. The bigger problem is money: owning one of the most advanced grappler ships in space does not make Gene any better at paying for fuel, ammunition or repairs. Aisha reappears broke, demoted and furious, convinced Gene knows where the Galactic Leyline is and determined to beat the answer out of him. He genuinely has no coordinates to give her. After an expensive dinner and another round of Aisha-sized chaos, Gene escapes by stunning her and leaves the furious Ctarl-Ctarl holding the bill.
006 The Beautiful Assassin Aired Feb 12, 1998
Gene and Jim turn to their wealthy friend Fred Luo for money and supplies, only to walk into an assassination attempt already in progress. Fred has been targeted by Twilight Suzuka, a soft-spoken killer whose wooden sword is far more dangerous than it looks. Gene agrees to protect Fred in exchange for badly needed munitions and makes the mistake of treating Suzuka like an ordinary hired gun. Their duel proves otherwise. Gene survives and wins on his own terms, but Suzuka does not simply disappear after losing. She promises to leave Fred alone while Gene is alive, neatly transferring the problem from the man paying him to Gene himself.
007 Creeping Evil Aired Feb 19, 1998
The Outlaw Star still has one embarrassing weakness: Gene cannot reliably get the thing off the ground. While Gilliam runs increasingly painful launch simulations, everyone else settles into ordinary work around Sentinel III. The quiet stretch ends when Kei Pirates begin hunting the crew again. Suzuka kills an attacker going after Melfina, then discovers that Gene's own fight has left him poisoned by a weapon designed to kill slowly. She joins the others partly because the pirates have become a common enemy. By the time they regroup aboard the ship, Gene is fading and the Outlaw Star is once again being forced into action before its captain is ready.
008 Forced Departure Aired Feb 26, 1998
Gene's condition deteriorates until the Kei Pirate who poisoned him offers an antidote in exchange for the Outlaw Star. Gene wakes long enough to reject the deal, leaving Melfina to attempt something more dangerous: using the ship's navigation system to purge the poison while Gene is inside the interface with her. It works, but recovery has to wait. The pirate attacks with robots and forces the crew into a fight around the ship, where Gene and Suzuka finally put him down. Then three Kei grappler ships arrive to finish the job. The Outlaw Star has to leave Sentinel III under fire, turning Gene's first real launch into the escape that finally sends the crew out into space.
009 A Journey of Adventure! Huh? Aired Mar 5, 1998
Adventure is expensive, which means Gene and Jim spend less time chasing cosmic mysteries than chasing invoices. A bounty on the killer Zomba looks like the easy money they need, and Gene jumps at it despite Jim's warnings about ship maintenance and their growing bills. The target they find turns out to be a disposable cyborg copy worth only a fraction of the advertised reward. Gene immediately decides that means they should hunt down the real Zomba and collect the rest. Unfortunately, Suzuka has already killed him. The episode is a very Outlaw Star reminder that having a legendary ship does not stop freelance work from being ridiculous, badly paid and competitive.
010 Gathering for the Space Race Aired Mar 12, 1998
The Outlaw Star reaches Heifong, and Gene spots an opportunity to solve two problems at once by entering the annual Heifong Space Race. Fred agrees to sponsor them, giving Gene and Jim publicity for their business and enough support to compete properly. Gene has another reason for caring about the field: the El Dorado is entered, and the MacDougall brothers connected to the ship are tied to the attack that killed his father. The race draws professionals, privateers and more than a few people willing to cheat. Aisha also turns up looking for a way back into the Galactic Leyline hunt, ensuring that what should be a publicity stunt is already becoming personal.
011 Adrift in Subspace Aired Mar 19, 1998
The Heifong Space Race becomes a test of exactly what the Outlaw Star can survive. Gene takes a dangerous line through the first checkpoint and keeps pushing even when the El Dorado attacks during the run toward sub-ether space. Aisha loses her own ride and talks her way aboard, finally accepting that Gene truly does not know where the Galactic Leyline is and deciding she may as well stay with the people most likely to find it. Damage and a subspace crisis knock the Outlaw Star off its ideal course, but Gene gambles on the ship's unusual capabilities and gets everyone through. They finish fourth overall, first among the privateers, and at least avoid losing money on Fred's sponsorship.
012 Mortal Combat with the El Dorado Aired Mar 26, 1998
The race may be over, but Gene is not finished with the MacDougalls. Harry contacts him with a challenge, and Gene knowingly takes the Outlaw Star into an asteroid field to force a confrontation with the El Dorado and get closer to the truth about his past. Harry is less interested in a fair grappler duel than in the Outlaw Star itself. He uses the fight to infiltrate Gilliam's systems and becomes especially interested in Melfina, whose connection to the ship confirms that the MacDougalls know more about Hilda's stolen project than they have admitted. Ron eventually pulls Harry out, leaving Gene with more questions and a much clearer enemy.
013 Advance Guard from Another World Aired Apr 2, 1998
Gene and Jim reopen Starwind and Hawking on Heifong, expecting the city's constant traffic to finally produce real money. Instead, everyone ends up taking separate, unimpressive jobs that seem to have nothing to do with one another. Jim and Melfina follow work through Fred, Aisha takes whatever she can get, and Gene keeps holding out for something worthy of the Outlaw Star. The jobs converge around an alien cactus capable of controlling minds and the enormous insect creature serving it. What looked like a collection of dead-end errands turns into a bizarre extraterrestrial threat, proving that even the crew's filler work has a habit of becoming an emergency.
014 Final Countdown Aired Apr 9, 1998
A low-paying towing job becomes a hostage situation when the advertising craft attached to the Outlaw Star locks into its systems and reveals a bomb. The terrorist Crackerjack demands political concessions for Heifong and is perfectly willing to destroy Gene, Jim and Melfina to make the threat credible. Gene has to work out how to separate or disarm the device without setting it off, while Aisha and Suzuka hunt Crackerjack on the ground. The split lets everyone do what they are good at: Gene improvises inside the trap, Jim and Melfina keep the ship alive, and the two women find the man responsible. Routine work once again ends with the crew saving far more people than they were paid to.
015 The Seven Emerge Aired Apr 16, 1998
The Kei Pirates stop treating Gene as an inconvenience and assign the Anten Seven to kill him. Their leader Hazanko gathers the assassins, while the first challenge reaches Gene in the form of Shimi and the easygoing stranger Leilong. Gene initially drinks with Leilong without realizing exactly who he is dealing with, then watches one of Shimi's men die rather than accept defeat. The confrontation becomes a formal duel that strips away Gene's usual swagger. He survives and apparently defeats Shimi, but the encounter leaves him thinking much harder about mortality and the kind of people now hunting him. The Galactic Leyline has become important enough that the pirates are sending their best.
016 Demon of the Water Planet
An old outlaw hires Gene, Jim, Melfina and Aisha for a salvage job on Heifong VII, a water world hiding a sunken ship loaded with valuable dragonite. The money sounds easy until they learn why nobody has recovered the cargo: a huge aquatic creature guards the wreck and has already killed people who tried. The Outlaw Star's grappler arms give the crew a chance to bring the ore up, but the old man is not there simply for profit. His history with the creature has turned the job into a personal reckoning. Once the dragonite is aboard, he sacrifices himself to hold the monster back long enough for the Outlaw Star to escape.
017 Between Life and Machine Aired Apr 23, 1998
Melfina has spent the entire journey waiting for Gene to help answer the questions Hilda left behind, and his lack of progress is beginning to hurt. Ron MacDougall exploits exactly that uncertainty by arranging a meeting with Gene and offering information connecting Melfina, the Outlaw Star and the Galactic Leyline. While Gene, Jim, Aisha and Suzuka deal with Ron and his armed creatures away from the ship, Harry approaches Melfina directly. He tries to convince her that he understands what she is and attempts to take the Outlaw Star with her aboard. Melfina refuses him, but the episode makes her problem unavoidable: everyone seems to know something about her except Melfina herself.
018 The Strongest Woman in the Universe Aired Apr 30, 1998
Fred needs Gene's help with a problem money cannot comfortably solve: Reiko Ando has won the Universal Strongman Tournament four years in a row, and Fred once promised to marry her if she reached five. With Ctarl-Ctarl competitors banned, the crew's first brilliant solution is to disguise Gene as a woman and enter him as "Jenny." He loses quickly. Aisha has already found a better loophole, entering under a mask as Firecat. The final match reveals her opponent Iraga as one of the Anten Seven, turning the tournament into a real fight between transformed superhuman women. Aisha wins, Reiko loses her fifth title, and Fred escapes the marriage for now.
019 Law and Lawlessness Aired May 7, 1998
The Outlaw Star runs into the other side of frontier life when a private security force arrests the crew as suspected pirates. Their Saurian commander Duuz and officer Valeria have every reason to distrust a heavily armed grappler ship full of outlaws, and Gene has very little patience for explaining himself. The argument is interrupted by what appears to be a damaged civilian vessel asking for help. It is actually a Trojan horse, and the supposed criminals end up fighting beside the security force against the attackers who board them. Gene's crew earns its release by doing the rescuing instead of the raiding and comes away with dragonite as payment, a useful distinction between being an outlaw and being a pirate.
020 Cats and Girls and Spaceships Aired May 14, 1998
A mysterious grappler ship nearly beats the Outlaw Star, forcing the crew to dock at Symka 5 for repairs and upgrades before trying again. While Gene worries about the next fight, Jim meets Hanmyo, a girl his own age with two cats, and the two make the kind of awkward, sweet connection he almost never gets time for. Neither knows that they are on opposite sides of the same battle. Hanmyo is one of the Anten Seven, and her cats are the co-pilots of the ship hunting them. Jim's improvements help the Outlaw Star destroy that ship in their rematch. He returns to the station afterward and waits for a girl who will never arrive.
021 Grave of the Dragon Aired May 21, 1998
The crew follows a lead to the Grave of the Dragon, ancient ruins connected to the technology behind the Galactic Leyline. Melfina's need for answers is getting more urgent, while Gene privately admits to Suzuka that he is no longer sure he can keep the promise he made to help her find them. The MacDougalls follow the Outlaw Star and attack again, with Harry trying to pull Melfina away while Ron takes on the others. An earthquake breaks up the fight before either side can finish it. Later, Professor Nguyen Khan makes contact, shuts Melfina down with a hidden command phrase and forces Gene into a deal: retrieve the Leyline coordinates from a prisoner if he wants her revived.
022 Gravity Jailbreak Aired May 28, 1998
Gene deliberately gets himself thrown into Gehenna Prison on the high-gravity world of Hecatoncheires because Khan claims one inmate, Saiyo Wong, knows the Galactic Leyline's exact coordinates. Surviving the prison is already difficult under crushing gravity, automated security and a sadistic system designed to make escape look impossible. Gene finds Wong and convinces him that working together is better than staying trapped. Their jailbreak turns the prison's own brutal environment into part of the plan, and Wong keeps his word once they are out, handing Gene the coordinate data. Khan revives Melfina after Gene returns, at which point Gene repays the professor's blackmail by throwing him off the ship and taking the next step toward the Leyline without him.
023 Hot Springs Planet Tenrei Aired Jun 4, 1998
With the Galactic Leyline finally within reach, Gene realizes ordinary ammunition may not be enough for what is waiting there. The crew stops on Tenrei, a resort world built around hot springs, because rare caster shells can supposedly be obtained from the priests who founded the place. Everyone else embraces the vacation while Gene keeps hunting for the weapons, which is probably the most discipline he shows all episode. Priests Ark and Hadul agree to trade the shells only if Gene completes a spectacularly questionable errand involving their fellow priest Urt. Meanwhile a Kei Pirate named Tobigera repeatedly tries and fails to assassinate him. Gene leaves Tenrei embarrassed, better armed and finally ready for the Leyline.
024 Cutting the Galactic Leyline Aired Jun 11, 1998
The coordinates lead the Outlaw Star to the Galactic Leyline, but Gene's crew is far from the only group arriving for the prize. The MacDougalls bring Khan with them, while Hazanko and the remaining Anten Seven approach aboard the Geomancer. Every faction has a different idea of what the Leyline can give them, and simply entering it becomes a contest between ships, weapons and ancient defenses. Inside, the impossible structure behaves less like a place than a machine built to examine whoever reaches it. A disembodied intelligence questions the intruders about why they have come and what they desire. Then Melfina is taken away from the others, confirming that she was always more than the Outlaw Star's navigator.
025 Maze of Despair Aired Jun 18, 1998
The Leyline scatters everyone through a shifting interior and turns the race for Melfina into a series of personal fights. Suzuka faces Hitoriga, Aisha battles Hamushi and Gene clashes with Ron MacDougall while Jim works to gather the crew back toward the Outlaw Star. Melfina reaches the gate at the center of the system, where Hazanko intends to use her as the key to whatever power lies beyond it. Harry gets there badly wounded after Hazanko attacks him, but his obsession with Melfina becomes one final useful act: he opens the protected route for Gene and Khan before dying. Gene leaves Ron behind and pushes through, knowing that reaching Melfina now matters more than winning any of the fights around her.
026 Return to Space Aired Jun 25, 1998
Gene reaches Melfina at the heart of the Galactic Leyline and faces Hazanko with caster shells powerful enough to kill them both. The Leyline revives them inside its core and grants the desires that brought each seeker there: Khan chooses ultimate knowledge, Hazanko chooses overwhelming power, while Gene and Melfina finally choose one another instead of an answer imposed on them. Melfina is released from the role she was created to perform, and the entire Outlaw Star crew combines its strength to destroy the empowered Hazanko. The Leyline disappears to a new location afterward. Gene and Jim return to ordinary work, but Aisha and Suzuka soon rejoin them, and the repaired Outlaw Star heads back into space together.

Primary Protagonist / Outlaw and Captain of the Outlaw Star

A twenty-year-old jack-of-all-trades on Sentinel III, Gene begins the series taking odd jobs with Jim Hawking while pretending that staying planet-side suits him just fine. In reality, the pirate attack that killed his father left him terrified of space and furious at the people who took his old life away. Hilda blows that routine apart by dragging Gene into a fight over Melfina and the experimental XGP15A-II, which Gene eventually names the Outlaw Star. He is reckless, flirtatious, stubborn and much more frightened than his swagger suggests. Gene's real growth comes from learning to stop treating freedom as running from responsibility. By the Galactic Leyline, the man who avoided space has built a crew he will risk everything to protect.

Co-Protagonist / Engineer, Hacker and Business Partner

Gene's eleven-year-old business partner is the person most likely to remember that fuel, repairs and ammunition actually cost money. Jim is a gifted computer specialist, mechanic and strategist who often behaves more like the responsible adult of Starwind and Hawking Enterprises than Gene does. He worries, plans and complains because somebody has to, but his caution never stops him from following Gene into increasingly ridiculous danger. Jim also forms some of the crew's warmest relationships, especially with Melfina and the endlessly exasperating Aisha. His brief friendship with Hanmyo shows a gentler side that the constant jobs and firefights rarely leave room for. Outlaw Star treats Jim as a real partner rather than a mascot, and the crew would fall apart quickly without him.

Melfina

SPOILER!

Primary Supporting / Bio-Android Navigator

Melfina wakes from a sealed container with almost no memory of why she exists, then discovers that everyone chasing her seems to know more about her purpose than she does. She is a biological android created alongside the XGP15A-II and designed to interface directly with its navigation system, making her essential to reaching the Galactic Leyline. That technical purpose never defines the person she becomes. Melfina is gentle, curious and painfully aware that other people keep treating her as equipment, property or a key. Life aboard the Outlaw Star gradually gives her friendships, choices and a sense of self that no designer programmed for her. Her bond with Gene becomes central because he ultimately has to see her not as the mystery Hilda left behind, but as someone entitled to decide what she wants.

Core Supporting / Ctarl-Ctarl Officer and Walking Disaster

A proud Ctarl-Ctarl officer who first meets Gene while trying to stop Hilda's escape, Aisha manages to turn professional humiliation into a personal mission to find the Galactic Leyline before anyone else. Demotion and poverty do very little to reduce her confidence. She eventually attaches herself to the Outlaw Star crew, bringing superhuman strength, remarkable durability, excellent hearing and an appetite capable of threatening the ship's finances. Aisha can transform into a far more powerful beast-like state when pushed, but her real charm is that she never needs permission to dominate a scene. She argues with Jim, challenges Gene, boasts constantly and still becomes fiercely loyal to everyone aboard. Beneath the ego, she is one of the crew's most dependable friends when things become genuinely dangerous.

Core Supporting / Twilight Assassin

Known throughout the underworld as Twilight Suzuka, she is an elite assassin whose preferred weapon is a wooden sword capable of cutting through things no wooden sword should touch. Suzuka enters Gene's life while attempting to kill Fred Luo and agrees to leave Fred alone only after Gene defeats her, creating the sort of professional obligation that inevitably turns into recurring companionship. She later joins the fight against the Kei Pirates for reasons of her own and becomes one of the Outlaw Star crew's calmest, most dangerous allies. Suzuka rarely raises her voice and almost never wastes movement, which makes her a natural contrast to Gene and Aisha. She keeps much of her past private, but her quiet loyalty becomes increasingly obvious the longer she stays with the group.

Hilda

SPOILER!

Major Supporting / Legendary Outlaw Known as Hot Ice

The outlaw known as Hot Ice Hilda is the person who detonates Gene and Jim's ordinary life. Disguised as Rachel Sweet, she hires them as bodyguards on Sentinel III while carrying information stolen from the Kei Pirates. Hilda has already taken something far more valuable from them: Melfina and access to the experimental XGP15A-II. She is experienced, guarded and completely comfortable operating in a criminal world Gene only thinks he understands. For Gene, Hilda becomes both mentor and warning, showing him what an outlaw looks like when freedom is backed by competence rather than swagger. She dies during the escape from Farfallus after ensuring Gene, Jim and Melfina can leave with the XGP, but her unfinished search for the Galactic Leyline becomes the journey they inherit.

Recurring Supporting / Wealthy Weapons Merchant

A wealthy young weapons dealer and longtime friend of Gene and Jim, Fred Luo is one of the reasons the Outlaw Star can remain armed despite its crew's spectacular inability to stay financially stable. Fred is an excellent businessman, happy to extend credit when he sees future profit and equally happy to remind Gene exactly how much money he owes. He is openly gay, frequently flirts with Gene and has enough confidence to enjoy Gene's discomfort without losing sight of business. Fred's connections pull the crew into everything from Suzuka's assassination attempt to the Heifong Space Race and the Universal Strongman Tournament. Under the flamboyance is a loyal friend with serious resources, which makes him one of the few people Gene can repeatedly ask for help and actually receive it.

Recurring Supporting / Blue Heaven Mechanic

A Corbonite mechanic working at the outlaw station Blue Heaven, Swanzo looks like a minor stop on Hilda's route until his history with her becomes clear. Hilda once saved his life, and Swanzo carries that debt seriously. After her death, he repays it by helping Gene register, paint and outfit the stolen XGP15A-II as the Outlaw Star, giving the crew the practical foundation they need to keep flying. Swanzo's containment suit and occasionally glitchy translator make him visually memorable, but his real importance is quieter. He is one of the few surviving people who knew Hilda well enough to help Gene understand the world she was moving through. In a series where ships constantly need repair, the mechanic who helps make the Outlaw Star legally exist earns his place.

Core Supporting / Artificial Intelligence of the Outlaw Star

Gilliam II is the operating intelligence of the XGP15A-II and therefore one of the few crew members who literally is the Outlaw Star. He manages ship systems, navigation support, diagnostics and maintenance while communicating through the vessel and small mobile service units. Gilliam is polite, dryly observant and increasingly willing to comment on the crew's questionable decisions, which gives the ship a personality beyond its machinery. His relationship with Melfina is especially important because both were created as parts of the same larger project, yet both develop identities that exceed their original functions. Gilliam cannot throw punches or fire a Caster, but every launch, repair and desperate combat maneuver depends on him. The Outlaw Star would not merely struggle without Gilliam; it would stop being itself.

Hazanko

SPOILER!

Primary Antagonist / Kei Pirate Leader and Tao Master

Hazanko is the Kei Pirate leader whose pursuit of Hilda, Melfina and the XGP drives the conflict behind much of the series. He commands the Anten Seven and practices Tao magic powerful enough to make ordinary weapons feel almost irrelevant. What he wants from the Galactic Leyline is not knowledge, freedom or discovery. He wants ultimate power, and he is willing to sacrifice subordinates, manipulate ancient technology and treat Melfina as a manufactured key to get it. Hazanko's patience makes him more dangerous than many of the assassins working beneath him; he is comfortable letting others fail until the route to the Leyline becomes clear. Once inside, he uses Melfina to reach its core and gains the overwhelming power he has been seeking, forcing the entire Outlaw Star crew into the final fight.

Ron MacDougall

SPOILER!

Major Antagonist / Mercenary Outlaw and Caster User

The older MacDougall brother is a calculating mercenary who treats piracy, bounty hunting and contract work as different columns in the same ledger. Ron is far calmer than Harry and usually the person keeping their operation focused on money and survival rather than obsession. He pilots alongside his brother, carries a Caster-style staff and has enough experience with dangerous clients to work for the Kei Pirates without ever confusing employment with loyalty. Gene also recognizes the MacDougalls' ship from the attack that killed his father, making Ron one of the few enemies tied directly to Gene's childhood trauma. Ron's cold response only makes the conflict worse: he has accepted so many lethal jobs that one destroyed family is barely memorable to him. The exception is Harry, whom Ron protects with genuine devotion.

Harry MacDougall

SPOILER!

Major Antagonist / Synthetic Human and Hacker

Ron MacDougall's younger brother initially appears calmer and more approachable, but his fixation on Melfina exposes how unstable that surface really is. Harry is a synthetic human created through artificial biological engineering, a similarity he uses to insist that he and Melfina are fundamentally alike. After encountering her through the Outlaw Star's computer systems, fascination becomes possessiveness. Rejection only makes him more violent. Repeated injuries lead to extensive cybernetic reconstruction, eventually giving Harry a body capable of interfacing with the Shangri La much as Melfina interfaces with the Outlaw Star. His final moments complicate a character who has spent much of the series trying to control her: mortally wounded by Hazanko, Harry uses what remains of his life to open the way for Gene to reach Melfina, then dies after saying goodbye.

Gwen Khan

SPOILER!

Major Supporting Antagonist / Scientist Behind Melfina and the XGP

Professor Gwen Khan is one of the scientists behind the XGP15A-II project and Melfina's creation, which gives him answers Gene desperately needs and absolutely no reason to provide them freely. Khan's curiosity is scientific in the most dangerous possible sense. The Galactic Leyline represents a source of knowledge so vast that questions of ownership, loyalty and ordinary morality become secondary to reaching it. He manipulates Gene by shutting Melfina down and forcing him to retrieve Saiyo Wong, then later works with the MacDougall brothers when that alliance offers another route forward. Khan ultimately reaches the Leyline and chooses knowledge as his desire. Rather than returning with the others, he remains within its information system, effectively becoming part of the thing he spent the series trying to understand.

Hanmyo

SPOILER!

Memorable Antagonist / Anten Seven Grappler Prodigy

The youngest member of the Anten Seven is a gifted grappler pilot whose battle partners are her cats, Kemi and Mata. Hanmyo is introduced as an assassin sent to destroy Gene, but her most memorable scenes happen nowhere near a battlefield. On a station she meets Jim Hawking without either child realizing the other is connected to the enemy. They practice together, talk and form an awkward little friendship that gives Hanmyo a life outside the Kei Pirates for a few hours. Then both return to their ships. During the next battle, Jim's improvements help the Outlaw Star defeat Hanmyo's grappler, killing Kemi and Mata before the vessel is destroyed with Hanmyo aboard. Jim waits afterward for a girl who can never come back, never learning exactly what happened.

Leilong

SPOILER!

Memorable Antagonist / Anten Seven Assassin Known as Shimi

Leilong is better known inside the Kei Pirate Guild as Shimi, one of the Anten Seven's most feared assassins and perhaps the most complete fighter Gene faces outside the final conflict. Rather than immediately announcing himself, Leilong meets Gene in a bar and talks with him about duels, killing and the exhaustion that comes from surviving too many of both. When the real confrontation begins, he defeats Gene's allies with alarming ease and agrees to settle things with a single old-fashioned gun draw. Gene appears to win when Leilong's weapon misfires. The death is staged. Leilong rigged the gun himself, allowing Shimi to disappear and Leilong to walk away from the Kei Pirates alive. It is an unusually graceful exit for a professional killer in this series.
