The 2022 Astral Gate Disaster & Earth Collapse
Earth · Astral Gate Disaster
Earth has been devastated by the earlier Astral Gate disaster, and the series repeatedly shows the consequences rather than stopping for a technical lecture. Much of humanity now lives across other planets and moons while Earth remains scarred by continuing debris impacts.
Why it matters
Cowboy Bebop's solar system feels old and improvised because civilization did not expand outward cleanly. People are living in the aftermath of a disaster that permanently changed where "home" can be.

Gate Travel · Tolls · Infrastructure
Astral Gates make routine travel between settled parts of the solar system possible and are treated as ordinary infrastructure by the people who use them. Session 14 even builds a bounty around gate toll robberies and the system's history.
Why it matters
The gates do not need a hard-science manual to matter. Cowboy Bebop uses them the same way it uses highways, ports and airports: as the infrastructure that lets a western, crime story and road movie happen across planets.
Mars & Core Planetary Colonies
Mars · Major Population Center
Mars is one of the series' major human population centers and the setting for important parts of the bounty economy and
Red Dragon story.
Rather than presenting one unified futuristic culture, Cowboy Bebop fills its cities with casinos, organized crime, ordinary apartments, restaurants, police and people trying to make rent.
Why it matters
The future feels lived in because Mars is not treated as a science-fiction exhibit. It is simply another crowded place where people have jobs, debts and histories.
Frontier Moons & Outer Rim Worlds
Ganymede · Venus · Titan · Callisto
The Bebop's cases move through colonies with very different environments and histories. Ganymede is tied to Jet's past, Venus to Roco's story, Titan to the war that shaped Gren, and Callisto to the frozen middle of
Jupiter Jazz.
Why it matters
The locations matter most when they carry character history. Cowboy Bebop uses the solar system as a road map for people who keep discovering that changing planets does not automatically change who they are.
