Details & Synopsis
Before the Saiyans. Before Namek. Before power levels meant anything at all, there was a kid with a tail, a talking pig, and a treasure hunt.
Son Goku is not the hero yet. He is a wild child raised alone in the mountains, strong enough to punch through boulders and naive enough to think Bulma's bra is some kind of helmet. When Bulma shows up hunting the seven Dragon Balls, Goku tags along, and what starts as a road trip comedy slowly, patiently, becomes the blueprint every shonen series after it would spend decades copying.
Produced by Toei Animation from Akira Toriyama's manga, Dragon Ball aired on Fuji TV from 1986 to 1989. 153 episodes that build Goku from a feral kid who has never seen a car into a genuine martial artist under Master Roshi's training, through two World Martial Arts Tournaments that establish the cast, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu, who would carry the entire back half of the franchise. Then Piccolo Daimao arrives, and the show that started as slapstick adventure comedy pivots into something considerably darker, ending on a cliffhanger that walks directly into the story everyone actually remembers.
This is the part people skip. That is a mistake. Every rule Dragon Ball Z would spend 291 episodes escalating, the tournaments, the training arcs, the villain who turns ally, the power that comes from pushing past your limit, gets written here first, at a fraction of the stakes and twice the charm. Goku punching a dinosaur because he is hungry. The Kamehameha as a discovery, not a signature move yet. Before he was the strongest fighter in the universe, he was just a kid who wanted to eat.
Watch this first. Or watch it after Z, once you already love him, and see where all of it actually started.

Early Saiyan Biology

Archival overview

What original Dragon Ball knows before the word 'Saiyan'

Original Dragon Ball gives Goku a tail, a transformation triggered by the full moon and a childhood tragedy he does not understand. Nobody around him has a species name that explains any of it.

That is the useful way to read these clues while watching the 1986 series: they are mysteries attached specifically to Goku. DBZ later supplies the biological explanation and vocabulary.
Why it matters
Watching the original first lets the Saiyan reveal work as an answer. The franchise did not begin by introducing an alien warrior race; it began with a weird little boy whose body occasionally did impossible things.

The tail & the Great Ape (Oozaru)

SPOILER! Tail weakness · Great Ape transformation · Later explained as Saiyan biology
Goku's tail is both useful and dangerous. Early on, grabbing it can drain his strength almost completely until he deliberately trains that weakness away. More dramatically, seeing the full moon while he still has the tail can trigger his transformation into a giant ape.

During original Dragon Ball, neither Goku nor his friends understand this as alien biology. They understand it as the terrifying thing that happens to Goku under the moon.
The Breakdown
Later Saiyan lore names the form Oozaru and quantifies its enormous power increase. Original Dragon Ball gives you the effect long before it gives you the explanation.

Full moon trigger

SPOILER!

The moon is the trigger, but nobody knows why yet

The full moon is the visible trigger for Goku's Great Ape transformation. That creates an unusual early vulnerability: a perfectly ordinary part of the night sky can turn the hero into an uncontrollable threat to everyone around him.

Roshi's answer during the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai is wonderfully extreme. Rather than trying to overpower the transformed Goku, he removes the trigger by destroying the moon.
Why it matters
The transformation is treated as a problem to survive, not a form Goku wants. DBZ later reframes the same biology as part of Saiyan heritage, which makes these early incidents look very different in retrospect.
