Details & Synopsis
Before the Saiyans. Before Namek. Before power levels meant anything at all, there was a kid with a tail, a talking pig, and a treasure hunt.
Son Goku is not the hero yet. He is a wild child raised alone in the mountains, strong enough to punch through boulders and naive enough to think Bulma's bra is some kind of helmet. When Bulma shows up hunting the seven Dragon Balls, Goku tags along, and what starts as a road trip comedy slowly, patiently, becomes the blueprint every shonen series after it would spend decades copying.
Produced by Toei Animation from Akira Toriyama's manga, Dragon Ball aired on Fuji TV from 1986 to 1989. 153 episodes that build Goku from a feral kid who has never seen a car into a genuine martial artist under Master Roshi's training, through two World Martial Arts Tournaments that establish the cast, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu, who would carry the entire back half of the franchise. Then Piccolo Daimao arrives, and the show that started as slapstick adventure comedy pivots into something considerably darker, ending on a cliffhanger that walks directly into the story everyone actually remembers.
This is the part people skip. That is a mistake. Every rule Dragon Ball Z would spend 291 episodes escalating, the tournaments, the training arcs, the villain who turns ally, the power that comes from pushing past your limit, gets written here first, at a fraction of the stakes and twice the charm. Goku punching a dinosaur because he is hungry. The Kamehameha as a discovery, not a signature move yet. Before he was the strongest fighter in the universe, he was just a kid who wanted to eat.
Watch this first. Or watch it after Z, once you already love him, and see where all of it actually started.

Mystical Artifacts

Archival overview

Nimbus · Power Pole · Mafuba

Early Dragon Ball is full of tools that matter because strength alone does not solve everything. The Flying Nimbus cares about purity, the Power Pole reaches places Goku cannot, and the Mafuba can contain an enemy a fighter may not be able to destroy.

These objects and techniques give the original series a different texture from DBZ. Goku is powerful, but he is still traveling through a world full of old magic, divine shortcuts and dangerous solutions inherited from people who came before him.
Why it matters
The mystical side of Dragon Ball never really disappears. It becomes easier to overlook once transformations and planet-shaking battles take over.

The Flying Nimbus (Kinto'un)

Kinto'un · Pure-hearted riders only
Master Roshi gives Goku the Flying Nimbus after seeing the boy's character for himself. The cloud's rule is immediate and wonderfully Dragon Ball: it can carry only someone with a pure heart.

Goku hops on without hesitation. Several of the supposedly more worldly adults and teenagers around him discover they cannot.
The Breakdown
Nimbus is transportation, but it also functions as a character test. Long before Goku can fly under his own power, the world literally gives him a cloud because he is uncomplicated enough to ride it.

The Power Pole (Nyoibo)

Grandpa Gohan's staff · The road to Kami
The Power Pole begins as the red staff Grandpa Gohan left to Goku: a nearly unbreakable weapon that can extend to extraordinary lengths on command. Goku uses that simple ability constantly during the adventure years.

Much later, the series reveals that the staff has another purpose. Placed at the top of Korin Tower, it forms the physical connection upward to Kami's Lookout.
What changed
An object Goku has carried since episode one turns out to be part of Earth's divine architecture. Dragon Ball is quietly connecting its earliest adventure props to its later mythology.

The Mafuba (Evil Containment Wave)

SPOILER! Mutaito · Roshi · A seal that can cost the user everything
The Mafuba is a sealing technique created by Master Mutaito to contain King Piccolo when defeating him outright was beyond the fighters of that era. The user whips the target into a spiraling current and directs them into a prepared container sealed with the proper talisman.

The technique is brutally taxing. Mutaito dies after using it, and Roshi knowingly risks the same fate when King Piccolo returns.
The Breakdown
The Mafuba is important because it is not 'a stronger attack.' It is what martial artists reach for when raw combat power is not enough, and the price can be the life of the person performing it.
