Details & Synopsis
The original Full Metal Panic balanced its military thriller against high school comedy with a precision that should not have worked and did. The Second Raid removes the balance. The comedy is almost entirely gone. What remains is the military thriller, and something underneath it that the first series was too busy juggling tones to fully surface.

Produced by Kyoto Animation and directed by Yasuhiro Takemoto, The Second Raid aired on TBS in 2005. Thirteen episodes. KyoAni were not yet the studio everyone knew them as, this predates Haruhi, predates Lucky Star, predates the reputation. What it represents is the studio at the peak of their action animation capability, before they pivoted to the aesthetic that would define their next decade. The Arm Slave combat sequences are as good as the genre produced in the mid-2000s.

The story picks up with the Amalgam organization moving from background threat to primary antagonist. Sousuke Sagara continues his impossible double life, MITHRIL special forces operative and Kaname Chidori's bodyguard-slash-classmate, until MITHRIL pulls him off the protection detail. What follows is the series' actual subject: what happens to a soldier trained since childhood for violence and nothing else when the one assignment that gave his life adjacent-to-human context is removed. Sousuke does not handle it gracefully. Sousuke does not handle it at all.

Gates is the antagonist the series deploys against this. Unhinged in a register the franchise had not previously attempted, not calculating, not ideological, simply a man who has found war and found that he likes it, enthusiastically, in a way that makes everyone around him deeply uncomfortable including his own allies. He is one of the more genuinely unsettling villain performances of the era.

Kaname alone and aware she is unprotected. Al, the Lambda Driver AI in the Arbalest, developing something that functions like concern. Tessa Testarossa carrying command weight that the first series kept at the level of character detail. The Second Raid is not a larger story than its predecessor. It is a narrower one, focused tighter on what the original was too busy to examine. Thirteen episodes and it earns every one of them.

A one-episode OVA, The Second Raid: "Another", was released with the DVD. Kaname in the bath, framed as comedy, functioning as something considerably more uncomfortable. Watch it after the series.

Sousuke (Arbalest) vs. Gates (Plan-1058 Codarl-i)

SPOILER!

Episodes 3-4 · Nanjing Tunnels · Gates Forces the Arbalest Back

The Nanjing rescue operation turns into an Amalgam trap, and Gates enters the fight in a Plan-1058 Codarl-i equipped with a Lambda Driver.
The Breakdown
Sousuke has the more famous Lambda Driver machine, but that does not make him the stronger Lambda Driver pilot. His ability to activate the Arbalest remains inconsistent, while Gates can bring the Codarl-i's system into the fight with far less hesitation.

Gates gains the upper hand, but the Codarl-i cannot sustain the engagement indefinitely and overheating becomes part of the escape window.
Why it matters
This is the moment The Second Raid proves the Arbalest is no longer a unique trump card. Amalgam has comparable technology and pilots who can use it more reliably.

Clouseau (M9D Falke) vs. Amalgam Pursuit Force

SPOILER!

Episode 5 · Sicily · The Unknown Black M9

The attempt to extract Bruno from Sicily turns into a running fight as Amalgam forces close in on the SRT.

A black Arm Slave suddenly intervenes and destroys the pursuing enemy machine before disappearing again. Sousuke and the others do not yet know that the pilot is Belfangan Clouseau.
Why it matters
Clouseau is introduced through competence before personality. By the time he walks into the SRT as their new commander, the audience has already seen what his Falke can do.

Clouseau (M9D Falke) vs. Sousuke (ARX-7 Arbalest)

SPOILER!

Episode 8 · Merida Island · Result: Clouseau Wins

Clouseau challenges Sousuke to an Arm Slave training duel after recognizing how badly Sousuke's relationship with the Arbalest has deteriorated.
The Breakdown
The Falke has no Lambda Driver. Clouseau still controls the fight because he treats his machine as an extension of himself while Sousuke treats the Arbalest like defective equipment he has been forced to use.
Why it matters
This is one of the most important fights in The Second Raid precisely because nothing explodes. Clouseau proves the problem is not that the Arbalest is weak. Sousuke does not trust it.

Sousuke (Arbalest) vs. Gates and the Codarl Force

SPOILER!

Episode 13 · Hong Kong · Result: Decisive Sousuke Victory

After Kaname reaches Hong Kong and tears through the lie Gauron left behind, Sousuke returns to the Arbalest with a clarity he has been missing for most of the series.
The Breakdown
The difference is immediate. Sousuke stops fighting Al, stops treating the Lambda Driver as unreliable equipment and starts giving the machine the certainty it requires. Gates and the accompanying Lambda Driver-equipped Codarls suddenly face the version of the Arbalest everyone had been waiting for.
Why it matters
The finale is not a new upgrade. Sousuke wins with the machine he already had. What changed was the pilot.
