Yomiko Readman is a substitute teacher, a British Library special agent, and the kind of person who will risk her life for a book without considering that unusual. Her codename is The Paper because she can turn loose sheets into blades, shields, ropes, aircraft, and whatever else the next impossible situation requires.

Read or Die was released in 2001 as three OVA episodes, which means it has about ninety minutes to introduce a paper-wielding bibliophile, clone a collection of historical figures, threaten the world, and stage an action sequence over Washington that still looks expensive. It does all of that and leaves before the idea can wear out.

This was prime early-DVD and fansub recommendation material. Short enough to finish in one night, strange enough that the premise sold itself, and animated well enough that nobody had to apologize for handing it to a first-time viewer. The rooftop opening with the World Trade Center still in the skyline also fixes the production to a specific moment in a way nobody involved could have intended.

Special Operations Agent / "Miss Deep"

Codenamed Miss Deep. Yomiko's field partner and the most layered presence in the OVA. Her ability to phase through solid matter makes her the most tactically versatile agent on the team, and she functions throughout most of the story as a composed, capable older sister to Yomiko. What she actually is runs deeper than that.

Nancy is an I-jin, but she differs from the others in one key respect: unlike the I-jin created from Fabre, Ikkyu, or Beethoven, she requires no artificial organs to function. And unlike them, the historical figure she was cloned from is never clearly identified. British Library records list a Cambridge education and Scotland Yard service history, but those records are thrown into serious doubt late in the OVA when Wendy Earhart produces a document for Joseph Carpenter: a Los Angeles County death certificate establishing that the original young woman Nancy's identity was built around died years before the events of the story. How much of the official biography is real and how much is cover legend is never resolved. The OVA does not try to resolve it.

What it does resolve clearly is her relationship with Yomiko. Whatever the history underneath her is, the devotion is genuine. The show makes that the final word on the question, which is the right call.
