Details & Synopsis
Saya Otonashi lives in Okinawa with an adoptive family, no memory of her past, and a medical condition nobody can explain to her. Then a creature attacks her school, a cellist named Hagi hands her a sword, and her body remembers exactly what to do before her mind catches up.

Blood+ took the basic image from Blood: The Last Vampire, a girl with a katana hunting Chiropterans, and turned it into a fifty-episode family tragedy that moved from Okinawa to Vietnam, Russia, France, England, and New York. It aired for a full year beginning in 2005, which gave it room to be slower than people expected. That pace is the point. Saya is not collecting monsters of the week. She is recovering a life that was taken from her in pieces, and every answer makes the family around her more complicated.

Adult Swim brought it west in 2007, where it became one of those shows people either followed every week or lost completely after missing three episodes. The opening themes changed, the locations changed, the conspiracy kept widening, and Hagi remained Hagi.

Do not confuse it with Blood-C. Same name, different wound. Blood+ is the one that takes its time.

The first time you meet her she is oversleeping, late for school, bad at sports, and completely ordinary. That is not an accident. Saya is built from the ground up as a real girl first and everything else second. She trips. She gets flustered. She loves her brothers with a straightforward warmth the show never once treats as weakness. And then she picks up a sword and something ancient wakes up behind her eyes and the show asks you to hold both of those things at the same time, permanently, for fifty episodes.

That tension is the whole series. Saya is an amnesiac high school student who is also one of the oldest and most dangerous creatures alive, and Blood+ refuses to let either version cancel the other out. She is gentle and she is devastating and she is completely, entirely a girl in a way the writing never undercuts, even when she is at her most terrifying. The femininity is not a costume she puts on between fights. It is who she is. The power does not contradict it.

Fifty episodes with Saya and you will understand why people who watched this show in 2006 never quite got over her.

Saya's chevalier. Follows her everywhere and says very little. Plays cello, which the show uses as a visual language for everything their relationship is and is not allowed to be. The restraint between Haji and Saya is one of the more genuinely affecting things Blood+ does. He does not demand. He does not explain himself. He is simply there, completely, in the way that some devotion expresses itself as presence rather than declaration. His history with Saya runs longer than her amnesia goes and the show parcels that history out deliberately. What he gave up and what it cost him lands exactly when the series needs it to.

Diva is what Saya might have become without any of the things that made Saya who she is, and Blood+ is honest about that without using it as an excuse. The tragedy of Diva is that she was made into what she is. The horror of Diva is that what she is operates without limits or remorse. White where Saya is dark. Childlike where Saya is grounded. The show's most devastating argument is that the distance between them was never biology. It was one family and the presence or absence of it.

How a Human Becomes a Chevalier

A Queen's blood can save a dying human and change what comes after

A Chevalier is not created by an ordinary Chiropteran bite. The transformation happens when a human receives a Queen's blood and survives.

Blood+ shows this through people rather than presenting one ceremonial rule. Saya gives Haji her blood after his fatal fall at the Zoo. Much later, she uses her blood to save Riku after Diva leaves him near death.
What changed
The person survives, but survival permanently places them inside the Queens' bloodline conflict. That is why becoming a Chevalier is never just a power-up.

The Chevalier Bond Does Not Erase Free Will

Devotion is real · obedience is not mechanical

Chevaliers are strongly drawn to protect and serve the Queen whose blood created them, but Blood+ repeatedly refuses to make that bond mind control.

Haji can disagree with Saya and withhold things he believes she is not ready to face. Solomon ultimately acts against Diva's side. Nathan remains impossible to reduce to simple obedience.
Why it matters
Blood creates a relationship and a powerful obligation. It does not finish the person's choices for them.

Ageless service across a Queen's waking and sleeping cycles

Chevaliers stop aging in the ordinary human sense and can remain active across the decades when their Queen disappears into hibernation.

That longevity is why Haji can carry memories Saya no longer has and why Diva's Chevaliers can build influence across generations of ordinary human institutions.
Why it matters
A Queen sleeps through history. Her Chevaliers do not. They become the bridge between one waking period and the next.

Chevaliers can pass as human while carrying bodies capable of far more dramatic transformation. Different Chevaliers manifest that ability differently: altered limbs, bladed forms, wings and more complete Chiropteran transformations all appear across the series.
How you can tell
The human appearance is not a disguise they must permanently abandon in combat. The change can be partial, temporary and specific to what the fight requires.

Regeneration Makes Chevaliers Hard to Kill, Not Untouchable

Severe wounds can heal · opposing Queen blood remains decisive

Chevaliers recover from injuries that would kill an ordinary human and can survive extreme physical damage.

That does not make every wound meaningless. Blood+ still treats exhaustion, dismemberment, impalement and accumulated damage as real problems, while blood from the opposing Queen's line can trigger the crystallization that regeneration cannot simply undo.
Why it matters
The series gives Chevaliers enormous durability without turning every confrontation into consequence-free damage.

Haji: Saya's First Chevalier, and the Choice He Keeps Making

Haji enters Saya's life as a human boy brought to the Zoo to be her companion. In 1883, a fall while trying to retrieve a flower leaves him dying, and Saya gives him her blood.

That moment makes him her Chevalier. It does not fully explain the relationship that follows.
Why it matters
Haji's devotion matters because Blood+ keeps presenting it as something lived over time. The blood bond may begin the Chevalier relationship, but his patience, restraint and repeated decision to remain beside Saya are what give it emotional weight.

Diva has five major Chevaliers: Amshel Goldsmith, Solomon Goldsmith, Karl Fei-Ong, James Ironside and Nathan Mahler.

They share a Queen, but they do not share one personality or one interpretation of service. Amshel turns devotion into a long political project. Karl becomes obsessive. James is rigidly loyal. Solomon breaks ranks. Nathan remains deliberately difficult to place.
Why it matters
Calling them Diva's Chevaliers explains the blood relationship. It does not explain the people inside it.

Solomon Proves Blood Is Not the End of the Choice

Diva's Chevalier · breaks with his brothers · chooses Saya

Solomon begins as one of Diva's Chevaliers and one of the Goldsmith brothers sustaining her side of the war.

His feelings for Saya gradually put him in conflict with the role his bloodline assigned him. He does not become simple, and he does not stop being what Diva made him. He chooses to act against that inheritance anyway.
Why it matters
Solomon is the clearest proof that a Chevalier can be bound by blood without being reduced to blood.

Riku Becomes Saya's Second Chevalier

Diva drains Riku badly enough that he will die without intervention. Saya gives him her blood and saves his life, turning him into her second Chevalier.
What changed
