MegaTokyo, 2032. Genom owns the city, Boomers do the work, and when the machines go bad the police are usually outmatched before they arrive. The Knight Sabers are what happens next: four women in powered armour taking jobs the system cannot handle and occasionally making the system itself the target.

Bubblegum Crisis arrived on VHS between 1987 and 1991 as eight OVA episodes with money on the screen, Priss on the microphone, and exactly the kind of cyberpunk future the late 1980s thought was waiting for us. Neon streets. Corporate towers. Women with day jobs climbing into hardsuits after dark. The music is not decoration. The opening performance of Konya wa Hurricane tells you what show you are watching before the first fight starts.

It was also one of those titles you learned through copies of copies. The original release stalled before its planned ending, the rights became a mess, and Western fans spent years piecing together whichever tapes, laserdiscs, subtitles, and DVD releases they could find. That unfinished quality became part of the experience. Eight episodes, several different production moods, no real conclusion, and still enough style and character to outlive shows that got twice the room.

This is not cyberpunk as a label pasted onto a police procedural. This is the thing people were trying to describe when they used the word.

Runs a lingerie boutique in MegaTokyo. Built the hardsuits. Recruited four women to wear them and fight boomers under the name the Knight Sabers. The operation exists because of Sylia and it exists for reasons the series reveals carefully across eight episodes rather than all at once. Her father created the boomer technology that Genom subsequently stole and industrialized, and what that history means to her personally is the spine everything else hangs from. Cool, precise, managing people and information with the same deliberate control. The most unknown quantity on the team, including possibly to herself.

Protagonist

Singer. Priss and the Replicants play bars in MegaTokyo and she writes songs about a city that eats people. Off the stage she rides hard, fights harder, and treats most human interaction as an obstacle to get through. The most aggressive of the Knight Sabers and the most obviously damaged. She has personal reasons for what she does in that hardsuit that go beyond Sylia's money and the city's boomer problem. The music and the violence come from the same place in her. One of the great protagonists of 1980s anime and the character Bubblegum Crisis was built to showcase.

Came to MegaTokyo from the countryside chasing a version of the city that the city was not going to hand her. Works as an aerobics instructor. Joined the Knight Sabers for the money and stayed for reasons the show develops more quietly than it does with Priss or Sylia. The most grounded of the four. That groundedness is exactly what the team needs even when it does not look like much from the outside. Her arc across the OVA is understated and honest.

The team's intelligence infrastructure runs through Nene entirely. Without her the other three are fighting blind.

AD Police officer. Has been chasing the Knight Sabers, and Priss specifically, for long enough that the pursuit has become something more complicated than police work. Competent, consistently frustrated by the gap between what the AD Police can legally do and what MegaTokyo's boomer problem actually requires. His relationship with Priss runs through the series as a background frequency that neither of them fully addresses. The show is honest about the limits of his jurisdiction without making him useless inside them.

Leon's partner in the AD Police. More observant than his relaxed affect suggests and considerably more comfortable with ambiguity than Leon is. Daley is the one who sees the full picture and makes careful decisions about which parts to act on. His role as comic counterweight to Leon is real but it is not the whole of what he brings. The show uses him well in the background of scenes that are technically about other people.

Sylia's younger brother. Maintains the hardsuits, runs technical support, and is enthusiastically present in situations where a teenager probably should not be cleared for. Mackie is comic relief handled carefully enough that he earns his actual place on the support structure of the operation. His relationship with Sylia carries its own texture separate from the Knight Sabers business and the show gives it room without making it the focus.

Genom executive vice president. The primary human antagonist for most of the series. Uses boomers as instruments of corporate power with a coldness that makes him more genuinely threatening than any rogue unit the AD Police has logged. Ambitious, controlled, operating within Quincy's shadow while building something of his own underneath it. Bubblegum Crisis's argument that the real danger in MegaTokyo was never the boomers going rogue. It was the people who decided what they were for.

Chairman of Genom Corporation. Old, seemingly frail, in complete control of the largest and most powerful corporation on earth. Quincy does not move much. He does not need to. Everything Mason does and everything the boomer industry represents traces back to decisions Quincy made long before the series starts. He is the still point the entire conflict orbits around. The show keeps him at a distance deliberately and the distance makes him larger.

Why it matters
GENOM does not enter the story as an outside company trying to conquer MegaTokyo. It is already woven into the rebuilt city. The same machines that make reconstruction possible also make GENOM difficult to remove from daily life.

GENOM Does Not Need Every Boomer Rampage to Be an Accident

Quincy · Mason · Corporate Power Behind the Street Violence
GENOM manufactures the Boomers used throughout MegaTokyo, but the OVA repeatedly shows that the corporation's danger is larger than defective machines. Mason deliberately manipulates Boomer incidents, pursues the Super Boomer project and uses corporate influence to clear people and neighborhoods out of his way.
Why it matters
A rogue Boomer can be destroyed. GENOM can replace it, hide what happened and continue operating. The Knight Sabers gradually learn that the recurring crisis is not simply "robots going berserk." It is who owns the technology, who decides what it is built for and who has enough power to make the consequences disappear.

The AD Police Can Fight Boomers; They Cannot Police GENOM

Leon McNichol · Daley Wong · Heavy Armor Without Corporate Power
The AD Police exist to respond to Boomer crime and are willing to throw armored units directly into fights that ordinary police cannot survive. What they do not have is the Knight Sabers' freedom to ignore jurisdiction, corporate pressure or orders from above.
Why it matters
Leon and Daley are not useless versions of the Knight Sabers. They are competent cops operating inside a system where GENOM can own technology, influence officials and close doors before an investigation reaches the people responsible. The Sabers can act precisely because they are outside that system.

Mason is useful to GENOM because he is willing to do the work that keeps the corporation's hands outwardly clean. Cynthia, the Super Boomer project, the Boomer violence in MegaTokyo and the destruction of Priss's neighborhood all move through him.
What changed
By "Blow Up," Mason is no longer behaving like a man satisfied to remain Quincy's lieutenant. His private ambition turns GENOM's resources into his own war, which is why Sylia's confrontation with him feels like the end of one conspiracy without ever feeling like the end of GENOM.

Corporate Subsidiaries · Politicians · Space Development · Global Reach

The OVA keeps widening what GENOM means. It has its own tower and executives, but it also reaches through research centers, subsidiaries, politicians and space development. Episode 6 makes that reach literal when Largo demonstrates control over orbital weapons and destroys GENOM towers around the world.
Why it matters
Destroying one Boomer or killing one executive never removes the system the Knight Sabers are fighting. GENOM survives people because the corporation has already spread beyond them.
