Details & Synopsis
Before Naruto. Before Bleach. Before the Big Three had a name. There was Dragon Ball Z, and for an entire generation of Western kids in the 1990s, Dragon Ball Z was simply anime. The category and the example were the same thing.

Produced by Toei Animation and directed by Daisuke Nishio, Dragon Ball Z aired on Fuji TV from 1989 to 1996, 291 episodes following the adult Goku and his allies across four escalating sagas: the Saiyan invasion, Frieza on Namek, the androids and Cell, and the decade-spanning weight of Majin Buu. Akira Toriyama's power scaling, once a comedy mechanic in the original Dragon Ball, became mythology here. Transformations as revelation. The Super Saiyan moment. Gohan vs. Cell in a fight still being argued about. The power level debate started here, and it has never actually ended.

In the West the story gets more complicated, and more interesting. Ocean Productions dubbed it first, a version truncated, edited, scored by Bruce Faulconer's electric guitar-driven replacement soundtrack that an entire generation now considers inseparable from the show itself. Cartoon Network ran it in syndication. Toonami ran it in the afternoon slot that trained a demographic to expect anime at 4pm. Kids who had never heard the word fansub knew every Kamehameha, every Spirit Bomb, every moment of dead air in a Frieza fight that took four episodes to cover forty five seconds.

Funimation eventually acquired full rights and started over: the uncut version, the original Kikuchi score, the complete run. Then came Dragon Ball Z Kai, the remaster that trimmed the series to its canonical bones, cutting the extended powering up sequences that had always been the show's most honest flaw.

The Seed of Might project sits apart from all of it. 291 episodes, fully color and audio graded, built as a preservation effort rather than a rebroadcast or a resale. It exists because the complete series deserved that kind of treatment while the actual licensing rights were still tangled up in dispute, not because it was ever meant to compete with an official release. This site documents that project's history as part of the record, the same way it documents every other chapter of how this show reached the West.

The power level arguments are still happening. The show is still here.

001 Mini Goku is Just Precious! I'm Gohan Aired Apr 26, 1989 canon 📷 207
Years after defeating Piccolo, Goku brings his young son Gohan to Kame House and finally introduces him to the friends who knew him before fatherhood. The reunion is shattered when Raditz arrives, identifies Goku as the Saiyan Kakarot, and reveals that Earth’s strongest fighter was never human at all. By the end of the episode, the old Dragon Ball world has been cracked open into something much larger.
002 The Strongest Warrior in All of History is Goku's Brother! Aired May 3, 1989 canon 📷 110
Raditz explains Goku’s Saiyan origins and demands that his brother prove his loyalty by helping wipe out Earth’s population. When Goku refuses, Raditz kidnaps Gohan and leaves behind a threat no one on Earth can answer alone. Piccolo arrives with the only practical proposal available: for once, he and Goku will have to fight on the same side.
003 Alright! This is the Strongest Combo on Earth! Aired May 10, 1989 canon 📷 115
Goku and Piccolo confront Raditz together, but the gap between them and a trained Saiyan warrior is brutal. Raditz reads their movements with his scouter, shrugs off attacks that once decided entire tournaments, and forces Piccolo to reveal that he has been developing a technique powerful enough to kill almost anyone if he can get time to charge it. Their only chance is to make Raditz stand still long enough for it to matter.
004 Piccolo's Trump Card! Gohan is a Crybaby Aired May 17, 1989 canon 📷 104
Piccolo begins charging the Makankosappo while Goku fights alone to keep Raditz occupied. The plan nearly works when Goku grabs Raditz’s tail, only for Raditz to exploit his brother’s mercy and escape. Then Gohan’s rage finally breaks through the space pod, and the four-year-old crashes into Raditz with enough force to injure a warrior neither Goku nor Piccolo could hurt.
005 Goku Dies! There's Only One Chance Left Aired May 24, 1989 canon 📷 122
Gohan’s attack gives Goku one final opening. He locks Raditz in place from behind and accepts that Piccolo’s Makankosappo will have to pass through both Saiyans to end the fight. Raditz dies first, Goku follows soon after, and before his last breath Raditz reveals the real disaster: two stronger Saiyans heard everything through his scouter and are already on their way to Earth.
006 Even Enma-sama is Surprised - A Fight in the Afterlife Aired Jun 7, 1989 canon 📷 103
Goku arrives in the afterlife expecting death to be the end of his part in the crisis, only for Kami to arrange something far stranger. King Yemma allows Goku to keep his body and sends him down the impossibly long Snake Way to train with King Kai before the Saiyans arrive. Back on Earth, Piccolo takes Gohan for himself, convinced that the child’s hidden power may be the only weapon worth developing in time.
007 Dinosaur Survival! Gohan's Difficult Training Aired Jun 14, 1989 canon 📷 101
Piccolo drops Gohan into the wilderness and gives him six months to learn how to survive before formal training begins. Hunger, fear and a very large dinosaur replace everything the sheltered child knew at home. From a distance Piccolo watches without comfort or encouragement, beginning a teacher-student relationship neither of them would ever have chosen under normal circumstances.
008 The Great Transformation on a Moonlit Night! The Secret of Gohan's Power Aired Jun 21, 1989 canon 📷 124
A full moon pulls the truth out of Gohan’s Saiyan blood. His tail triggers the same Great Ape transformation that once plagued Goku as a child, turning the frightened four-year-old into a rampaging giant. Piccolo destroys the moon, removes Gohan’s tail, and is left with one more reason to take the coming Saiyan invasion seriously.
009 Sorry Robot-san - The Tears that Vanished in the Desert Aired Jun 28, 1989 filler 📷 120
Alone in the desert, Gohan discovers an old robot trapped beneath the ruins of an ancient structure. The machine wants nothing to do with him at first, but necessity slowly turns their uneasy coexistence into companionship. When the ruins collapse, the robot spends its last strength saving Gohan, leaving the boy with another hard lesson in surviving without anyone coming to rescue him.
010 Don't Cry Gohan! His First Fight Aired Jul 5, 1989 filler 📷 121
Gohan’s wilderness training finally forces him into a fight he cannot simply run away from. Faced with danger on his own, he begins learning the difference between uncontrolled bursts of power and actually choosing to stand his ground. The episode is small compared with the battles coming later, but it is one of the first times Gohan starts behaving like a fighter rather than a frightened passenger.
011 The Saiyans, Strongest Warriors in the Universe, Awaken! Aired Jul 12, 1989 filler 📷 110
Far from Earth, Vegeta and Nappa wake from suspended animation and resume their journey toward the planet Raditz died trying to conquer. Their casual confidence makes the approaching invasion feel worse, not better: these are not desperate attackers rushing toward a gamble, but veteran Saiyans who fully expect Earth to fold beneath them. Their movement toward Earth turns the training clock into a real countdown.
012 Catnap on the Serpent Road - Goku Takes a Tumble Aired Jul 19, 1989 canon 📷 106
Goku’s run along Snake Way goes wrong when exhaustion sends him tumbling off the path and into the world below. What should have been a straight race to King Kai becomes another delay, forcing Goku to find a way back while precious time keeps disappearing. On Earth, everyone else is still training for enemies who are getting closer whether Goku is ready or not.
013 Hands Off! Enma-sama's Secret Fruit Aired Jul 26, 1989 canon 📷 114
Goku discovers that the afterlife has its own rules, its own shortcuts and its own people perfectly willing to make his journey more difficult. He chases after King Yemma’s prized fruit and struggles to get himself back onto Snake Way, gaining a burst of strength along the way. The detour is ridiculous, but the deadline behind it is not: every lost hour matters now.
014 Such Sweet Temptation! The Snake Princess's Hospitality Aired Aug 2, 1989 filler 📷 117
A beautiful palace on Snake Way offers Goku food, comfort and the first real chance to stop running since his death. Unfortunately, Snake Princess has no intention of letting him leave. Goku has to escape a trap built around temptation rather than strength, then get back on the road before the coming Saiyans make the whole detour fatal.
015 Escape from Piccolo! Gohan Summons a Storm Aired Aug 9, 1989 filler 📷 95
Gohan’s homesickness finally wins out and he tries to escape Piccolo’s wilderness training. The trip toward home becomes its own survival test as storms and exhaustion turn a simple act of running away into something genuinely dangerous. By the time it is over, Gohan is beginning to understand that wanting his old life back will not make the Saiyans disappear.
016 Run, Gohan! Longing for Mt. Paozu, Where Chi-Chi is Waiting Aired Aug 16, 1989 filler 📷 113
Still trying to reach home, Gohan encounters a group of orphaned children surviving together on the edge of society. For once he is not the most helpless child in the room, and his instinct is to protect people who have even less than he does. The experience pushes him another step away from the sheltered boy Piccolo abandoned in the wilderness.
017 City of No Tomorrow! The Long Road to Victory Aired Aug 30, 1989 mixed 📷 133
Earth’s fighters continue preparing for the Saiyans while Gohan is pulled through another hard lesson about what strength can and cannot save. The episode moves between training and a city already shaped by fear and violence, letting the coming invasion hang over people who do not even know what is approaching. By now the year of preparation no longer feels long enough.
018 Last Stop on Serpent Road! Are You Kaio-sama? Aired Sep 6, 1989 canon 📷 133
After what feels like an endless run, Goku finally reaches the tiny planet at the end of Snake Way and meets King Kai. The legendary master is nothing like the solemn teacher Goku expected, and before any serious training can begin Goku has to survive ten-times Earth’s gravity and prove he can keep up with King Kai’s bizarre sense of humor. The trip is over; the real training starts now.
019 The Battle with Gravity! Catch Bubbles-kun Aired Sep 13, 1989 canon 📷 133
King Kai’s first challenge is brutally simple: catch Bubbles while moving under ten-times Earth’s gravity. Goku quickly discovers that even standing and breathing on this tiny planet can be exhausting, turning a childish-looking exercise into a full-body battle. Every improvement matters because King Kai knows exactly how little time remains before Vegeta and Nappa reach Earth.
020 The Return of the Saiyan Legend! Goku's Roots Aired Sep 20, 1989 canon 📷 143
With Goku adapting to King Kai’s gravity, the training shifts toward techniques strong enough to matter against the Saiyans. King Kai also begins explaining the history of the Saiyan race and the destruction that followed them, giving Goku a clearer picture of the people Raditz claimed as his own. For the first time, Goku is learning not just how to fight the invaders, but where he came from.
021 Come Forth, Shenlong! The Saiyans Finally Arrive on Earth Aired Sep 27, 1989 canon 📷 139
The year of warning runs out. Vegeta and Nappa land on Earth, and the Dragon Balls suddenly become part of their plan after everything they learned from Raditz’s scouter transmission. While the Z Fighters move to intercept them, Goku’s training is finally complete, leaving one terrifying question hanging over the invasion: can he get back in time?
022 Unbelievable!! Saibaimen, Born from the Soil Aired Oct 11, 1989 canon 📷 174
Nappa plants Saibaimen into the Earth and turns the opening stage of the invasion into a grotesque test of the defenders. Each creature is far stronger than its size suggests, forcing Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu and Piccolo to fight seriously before either Saiyan has even stepped forward. Vegeta watches from the sidelines as if Earth’s best fighters are only the warm-up.
023 Yamcha Dies! The Terror of the Saibaimen Aired Oct 18, 1989 canon 📷 170
Yamcha steps in against a Saibaiman and wins the fight cleanly, only to relax a moment too soon. The creature grabs him and self-destructs, killing him before anyone can intervene. It is the first major death of the invasion and the moment the battle stops feeling like a rematch with stronger opponents and starts feeling like a massacre.
024 Farewell Ten-san! Chiaotzu's Suicide Strategy Aired Oct 25, 1989 canon 📷 160
Nappa enters the battle personally and immediately makes the Saibaimen look like an opening act. Chiaotzu clings to his back and detonates himself in a desperate attempt to stop him, but the sacrifice barely leaves a mark. Tien is left staring at the loss of his closest friend while Nappa keeps moving as though nothing happened.
025 Tenshinhan Cries Out!! This is My Last Kikoho Aired Nov 1, 1989 canon 📷 161
Tien throws everything he has left into one final Kikoho against Nappa. The attack drains the last of his life and still fails to kill the Saiyan, leaving another veteran fighter dead before Goku can reach the battlefield. The cost of buying time keeps rising, and Vegeta still has not needed to fight.
026 An Intense 3-Hour Delay! The Kinto-Un Bullet-Express Aired Nov 8, 1989 canon 📷 160
Vegeta grants the defenders a three-hour delay when he learns Goku is on his way, partly out of curiosity and partly because he wants to see the fighter who defeated Raditz. The ceasefire is almost more unnerving than the battle because everyone knows exactly when it will end. Goku races back from the afterlife while the survivors can do nothing but wait.
027 Leave it to Me! Gohan's Great Burst of Anger Aired Nov 22, 1989 canon 📷 164
The deadline expires before Goku arrives, and Nappa resumes the attack. Gohan is terrified, but seeing the people around him being torn apart finally brings out the anger Piccolo has spent a year trying to reach. His burst of power proves once again that the child may be the strongest person on the field for a few seconds at a time, if only he could control it.
028 Ferocity of the Saiyan! God and Piccolo Both Die! Aired Nov 29, 1989 canon 📷 170
Piccolo takes Nappa’s attack meant for Gohan and dies protecting the child he once intended to use as a weapon. With Piccolo gone, Kami dies as well and Earth’s Dragon Balls vanish with him. The invasion has now cost the planet not only another defender, but its easiest way to undo any of the deaths.
029 Father is Awesome! The Ultimate Finishing Technique: Kaio-Ken Aired Dec 6, 1989 canon 📷 150
Goku finally reaches the battlefield and finds almost everyone he trained to save already dead. After checking on Gohan and Krillin, he turns his attention to Nappa and reveals just how much King Kai’s training changed him. The Kaio-Ken turns what had been an unstoppable invasion into the first fight all day where a Saiyan invader is the one being overwhelmed.
030 A Hot, Unbounded Battle! Goku vs Vegeta Aired Dec 13, 1989 canon 📷 143
Vegeta orders Nappa out of the fight after Goku makes the power gap obvious, then kills his own partner when Nappa refuses to accept defeat. With the battlefield cleared, Goku and Vegeta move away from Gohan and Krillin to settle the invasion themselves. The real Saiyan battle begins with both fighters still hiding how far they can push their bodies.
031 Now, Goku! A Final Technique with Everything on the Line Aired Dec 20, 1989 canon 📷 153
Goku realizes ordinary strength will not be enough against Vegeta and starts forcing the Kaio-Ken beyond the level King Kai warned him to use. Every increase gives him enough speed and power to keep up, but it also tears at his body from the inside. Vegeta answers by preparing an attack powerful enough to destroy Earth rather than accept losing the duel.
032 Battle Power Times Ten!! Vegeta's Great Transformation Aired Jan 17, 1990 canon 📷 99
The beam struggle ends without settling anything, and Vegeta reaches for the Saiyans’ oldest advantage. Unable to find Earth’s moon, he creates an artificial one and transforms into a Great Ape, multiplying his power beyond anything Goku can answer directly. The fight changes instantly from a close duel into survival against a giant who still has Vegeta’s intelligence.
033 Don't Die, Father!! This is Gohan's Hidden Strength Aired Jan 24, 1990 canon 📷 143
Great Ape Vegeta crushes Goku and leaves him almost unable to move, forcing Gohan and Krillin back into a battle they had been told to escape. Yajirobe also enters the fight at the one moment his hidden presence can matter, cutting off Vegeta’s tail and ending the transformation. The defenders finally have Vegeta back in a body they can hurt, but none of them has much strength left.
034 Shoot, Kuririn! The Genki-Dama, Packed with Hope Aired Jan 31, 1990 canon 📷 142
Goku can no longer throw the Genki-Dama himself, so he entrusts its remaining energy to Krillin. Vegeta dodges the first throw, but Gohan rebounds the attack back into him and lands the hit everyone has been gambling on. Even that is not enough to end the fight, leaving a battered Vegeta still capable of making one last attempt to wipe them out.
035 Cause a Miracle! The Super Saiyan, Son Gohan Aired Feb 7, 1990 canon 📷 143
Vegeta’s attempt to use Gohan’s tail against the group backfires when the child transforms into a Great Ape. As the battlefield collapses around them, Gohan’s giant body finally crushes Vegeta and ends the invasion. Krillin has the defeated Saiyan at sword-point, but Goku asks him to let Vegeta escape, turning the victory into an act of mercy that will reshape the rest of the series.
Namek Saga 39 eps 36 canon 3 filler 📷 39
036 We're Off Into Space! The Planet of Hope is Piccolo's Homeland Aired Feb 14, 1990 canon 📷 162
The battle with Vegeta is over, but victory has left Earth with Piccolo, Yamcha, Tien and Chiaotzu dead and the Dragon Balls gone with Kami. Krillin remembers Vegeta mentioning another set of Dragon Balls on Piccolo’s homeworld, giving the survivors one possible way to undo the damage. Namek stops being a piece of Piccolo’s past and becomes the next destination.
037 The Mysterious Yunzabit! The Search for God's Spaceship Aired Feb 21, 1990 filler 📷 145
Bulma, Krillin and Gohan need a ship capable of crossing interstellar space, and the wrecked Saiyan pod is not going to solve the problem. Mr. Popo takes Bulma to Yunzabit Heights, where the ancient spacecraft that once brought Kami to Earth has been waiting for centuries. What looked like a dead end becomes a practical route to Namek.
038 Blast-off for Planet Namek! The Terror Awaiting Gohan and Company Aired Feb 28, 1990 filler 📷 124
Bulma and Dr. Brief work to make Kami’s old ship usable while Gohan and Krillin recover and prepare for the trip. Chi-Chi is furious at the idea of Gohan leaving Earth again, but he chooses to go because reviving Piccolo may also restore Kami and the Dragon Balls. The voyage begins with three people carrying the hopes of everyone the Saiyans killed.
039 Friends or Foes? Children of the Mysterious Giant Spaceship Aired Mar 7, 1990 filler 📷 119
A week into the trip to Namek, Bulma, Krillin and Gohan are attacked in deep space and pulled aboard a huge mirror-covered ship. The interior is a maze of traps, and when they finally reach the people controlling it, they discover their captors are children. The kids have every reason to fear strangers, and they immediately assume the three newcomers belong to the same force that destroyed their home.
040 Really, for Real? There Lies Namek, Planet of Hope Aired Mar 14, 1990 canon 📷 121
Still held aboard the children’s ship, Bulma, Krillin and Gohan learn why the name Frieza terrifies people far beyond Earth. When the ship is caught in a violent meteor storm, Gohan and Krillin save the children while Bulma takes the controls and pilots everyone to safety. Their actions finally earn the children’s trust, and the trio is released with directions toward a shortcut to Namek.
041 Kind-hearted Aliens - There's the Five-Star Ball Already Aired Mar 21, 1990 canon 📷 143
The shortcut drops Bulma, Krillin and Gohan onto a planet they believe is Namek, where two apparently friendly Namekians nurse them back to health and offer to help find the Dragon Balls. The first searches seem almost absurdly successful, with Dragon Balls appearing one after another exactly where the radar says they should be. Krillin is uneasy, but after everything it took to get this far, all three want to believe they have finally arrived.
042 Planet Freeza No. 79 - Vegeta Recovers!! Aired Apr 4, 1990 canon 📷 144
The search for the Dragon Balls continues across the false Namek through deserts, forests and impossible hazards, while the two helpful 'Namekians' keep steering the group toward one convenient discovery after another. Elsewhere, Vegeta recovers on Planet Frieza No. 79 and begins planning his next move after the beating he took on Earth. Two completely different races for the Dragon Balls are now moving at the same time, though Bulma and the others do not yet know theirs is built on a lie.
043 The Dragon Balls Are All Here! Piccolo-san Comes Back to Life Aired Apr 11, 1990 canon 📷 143
With six Dragon Balls gathered, the fake Namek adventure starts to unravel. Krillin notices how suspiciously easy the search has been, while the two 'Namekians' disappear at exactly the wrong moments and the landscape itself begins behaving strangely. The truth finally breaks through: the Dragon Balls, the scenery and their guides were all part of an illusion, and Vegeta learns that Frieza is already heading for the real Namek.
044 A Tough New Enemy! Emperor of the Universe, Freeza Aired Apr 18, 1990 canon 📷 143
The two aliens reveal why they created the fake Namek: they were stranded on the planet and used illusions drawn from Bulma’s memories to keep the group occupied until a path through the surrounding space storm opened. They try to steal Kami’s ship and the Dragon Radar, but Gohan and Krillin stop them and Bulma escapes the false world for good. By the end of the episode, the trio finally reaches the real Planet Namek, where the actual race for the Dragon Balls is waiting.
045 Vegeta's Ambition! I am the Greatest Warrior in the Universe!! Aired Apr 25, 1990 canon 📷 162
The moment Bulma, Krillin and Gohan reach the real Namek, the difference is obvious: Frieza and Vegeta are already there, and neither came to ask politely for the Dragon Balls. Frieza’s forces spread across the planet while Vegeta openly rebels against his former master, intercepting Cui and revealing how much stronger he became after surviving Earth. What had been a detour through illusion becomes a genuine three-sided struggle for immortality.
046 Goku's Power at Full-Force!! Six Days to the End of the Galaxy Aired May 2, 1990 canon 📷 162
Gohan and Krillin hide Bulma and investigate a nearby Namekian village, where they witness Frieza’s men searching for another Dragon Ball. On Earth, Yajirobe brings Goku a new supply of Senzu Beans, finally restoring him from the Vegeta battle. Dr. Brief has prepared a gravity-equipped spacecraft, and Goku blasts off for Namek with six days to turn recovery into training.
047 Surprise Attack!! The Elder's Target was the Scouter Aired May 9, 1990 canon 📷 164
Frieza demands a village’s Dragon Ball and begins killing Namekians when its elder refuses to cooperate. Three young warriors destroy the soldiers’ scouters, briefly stripping Frieza’s forces of their easiest way to track power levels. Dodoria steps forward to crush the resistance, while Gohan struggles to remain hidden and watch innocent people die.
048 Gohan in Peril! A Pursuing Dodoria Summons Death Aired May 16, 1990 canon 📷 155
Dodoria overwhelms the Namekian defenders and murders the village elder despite receiving the Dragon Ball. When he turns on the surviving child Dende, Gohan finally abandons caution and attacks, allowing Krillin to help carry the boy away. Dodoria gives chase, turning the rescue into a desperate flight across Namek.
049 Dodoria Dies by Explosion! Vegeta's Fearsome Shockwave Aired May 23, 1990 canon 📷 165
Krillin blinds Dodoria with the Solar Flare long enough for Gohan and Dende to escape. On his way back to Frieza, Dodoria is intercepted by Vegeta and quickly discovers that the Saiyan he once looked down on is now stronger than he is. Before dying, Dodoria reveals that Frieza was responsible for destroying Planet Vegeta, and Vegeta kills him anyway.
050 Escape From a Burning Planet!! A Life-or-Death Kamehameha Aired May 30, 1990 canon 📷 163
Goku’s gravity training nearly becomes fatal when his ship is knocked off course toward a star, forcing him to use everything he has just to survive and recover the flight path. On Namek, Vegeta locates another village and takes its Dragon Ball for himself after wiping out the people protecting it. Everyone is now collecting the same seven objects by completely different rules.
051 Courage Times One Hundred! The Warriors Gather Under Kaio Aired Jun 6, 1990 canon 📷 153
Vegeta finishes destroying the village and hides its Dragon Ball underwater so Frieza cannot assemble all seven. Krillin and Dende head toward the Grand Elder, who possesses the final ball, while Gohan remains with Bulma. On King Kai’s planet, Piccolo, Yamcha, Tien and Chiaotzu arrive to train, and King Kai warns Goku that Frieza is a threat he should not challenge lightly.
052 Listen to Me Goku! Hands Off Freeza Aired Jun 20, 1990 canon 📷 155
Krillin and Dende continue toward the Grand Elder while Vegeta closes in on the shifting Dragon Ball hunt. Zarbon finally confronts Vegeta and discovers that the Saiyan’s new confidence is not bluffing, but his elegant appearance hides a much stronger transformed state. The fight turns violently once Zarbon stops caring about looking beautiful.
053 Nothing but Goosebumps! The Handsome Warrior Zarbon's Devilish Transformation Aired Jun 27, 1990 canon 📷 153
Zarbon transforms and completely reverses his battle with Vegeta, pounding the Saiyan into the ground and leaving him sinking beneath a lake. Believing Vegeta dead, Zarbon returns to Frieza without recovering the information Frieza still needs. That mistake makes Vegeta more valuable alive than Zarbon expected.
054 Defend the Planet of Hope!! Kuririn's Astonishing Power-Up Aired Jul 4, 1990 canon 📷 152
Krillin and Dende reach the Grand Elder and meet Nail, whose resemblance to Piccolo immediately connects Namek to the world they left behind. Guru gives Krillin the final Dragon Ball and awakens the hidden power inside him after recognizing his good intentions. Meanwhile, Frieza orders Zarbon to retrieve Vegeta’s body, because the missing Dragon Ball matters more than finishing an enemy.
055 Back from the Brink of Death - The Miracle Man, Vegeta Aired Jul 18, 1990 canon 📷 153
Zarbon recovers the badly injured Vegeta and brings him back to Frieza’s ship for treatment, unknowingly setting up the Saiyan for another recovery boost. Krillin races back with Guru’s Dragon Ball, while Piccolo and the others begin their own training under King Kai. Across three different locations, everyone is preparing for a fight none of them yet understands.
056 An Enormous Battle Power!! Freeza's Strategy is Shattered Aired Aug 1, 1990 canon 📷 153
Vegeta wakes inside Frieza’s ship stronger than before and immediately turns his recovery into an escape plan. He distracts Frieza and Zarbon, steals the five Dragon Balls stored aboard the ship, and hides them where Frieza’s scouter-less forces cannot easily find them. For the first time, Frieza is the one reacting while Vegeta controls most of the board.
057 I'm Back to My Old Self Again!! Goku Takes on 100 Times Gravity Aired Aug 8, 1990 canon 📷 153
Krillin returns with Guru’s Dragon Ball, but both Vegeta and Zarbon track him down and prepare to fight over it. Vegeta’s latest recovery has widened the gap again, and this time he kills Zarbon decisively before taking Krillin’s ball. Meanwhile, Goku’s gravity system malfunctions and locks him under 100 times Earth’s gravity, which he turns into the harshest training session of his life.
058 Freeza's Secret Weapon! The Devilish Ginyu Special-Squad Aired Aug 22, 1990 canon 📷 153
With Dodoria and Zarbon dead, Frieza calls for the Ginyu Force, his elite team of specialists, to restore control of the situation. He manages to leave with the ball concealed, only for Vegeta to realize too late exactly what happened.
059 Bulma, Watch Out!! The Four-Star Ball Falls into Freeza's Hands Aired Aug 29, 1990 canon 📷 153

060 Charge!! The Kaio-Ken and Kamehameha of an Indomitable Spirit Aired Sep 5, 1990 canon 📷 153
Bulma recovers the Dragon Ball only to be captured by two of Frieza’s soldiers who decide they would rather make the wish themselves. She plays along, using her knowledge of the Dragon Balls to lead them back into the water and directly toward the giant crab. The plan works, leaving Bulma free and two would-be traitors very thoroughly removed from the race.
061 The Great Battle Approaches! The Ginyu Special-Squad Takes the Stage!! Aired Sep 12, 1990 canon 📷 188
Gohan and Krillin reach Guru while Vegeta follows close behind, unwilling to let the final Dragon Ball slip away. Guru awakens Gohan’s hidden power just as an enormous group of energies arrives on Namek: the Ginyu Force. Vegeta knows exactly what that means and makes the proposal nobody wanted to hear, that the three of them must cooperate or Frieza will win.
062 Goku on Final Approach! Smash through Freeza's Dragnet Aired Sep 19, 1990 canon 📷 162
The Ginyu Force arrives with five fighters, five personalities and enough power to make even Vegeta stop pretending he can handle everything alone. Captain Ginyu takes control of the Dragon Balls while Guldo, Recoome, Burter and Jeice prepare to deal with Vegeta, Krillin and Gohan. The uneasy alliance barely has time to form before Frieza’s strongest team finds them.

240 Enormous Hope!! A New Finishing Technique for the Little Squirts Aired Sep 21, 1994 canon 📷 265
Goku introduces the Fusion Dance and explains the absurdly precise requirements: two fighters of similar size and power must mirror each other perfectly to become one person for thirty minutes. Goten and Trunks are horrified by the pose and fascinated by the promise of strength. Fusion becomes Earth’s new plan, not because it is elegant, but because almost every other option is gone.

244 West City is Targeted! Stop, Majin Boo!! Aired Nov 2, 1994 canon 📷 265

245 An Astounding, Great Transformation!! Super Saiyan 3 Aired Nov 9, 1994 mixed 📷 265
Goku reveals Super Saiyan 3, a transformation so extreme that the power can be felt across worlds. 246 Bye-Bye, Bobbidi!! Majin Boo Rebels Aired Nov 16, 1994 canon 📷 314
Goku ends the fight and leaves Buu with a question more dangerous to Babidi than any attack: why does someone as powerful as Buu take orders from a weaker wizard? The thought sticks. 251 The Birth of a Superhuman Warrior!! His Name is Gotenks Aired Dec 21, 1994 canon 📷 315

For the first time, the threat to Earth is reduced not by a stronger fighter, but by somebody treating the monster like a person capable of choosing differently.
254 Run Away, Satan!! An Angry Majin Boo Emerges Aired Feb 1, 1995 canon 📷 315

Piccolo finally leads Super Buu toward the Room of Spirit and Time, using the long route through the Lookout to buy Goten and Trunks every possible minute to train. Inside the chamber, the boys fuse into Gotenks and begin the battle they were created to fight. This time the power is real, but Gotenks’ habit of treating combat like a performance is still very much alive.
258 I'm Going Like I Mean It!! A Wide-Open Super Gotenks Aired Mar 1, 1995 canon 📷 250
Gotenks escalates against Buu with a catalogue of attacks that sound ridiculous until they start exploding. Gotenks’ power collapses just as the situation becomes hopeless, but another fighter finally arrives from the Sacred World of the Kais. Gohan returns with Old Kai’s ritual complete and no transformation needed to access his enormous new strength. He steps between Buu and the children, and the balance of the battle changes the moment Buu realizes this is not the same Gohan he fought earlier.
263 Boo is Overwhelmed!! Gohan's Miracle Power Aired May 3, 1995 canon 📷 280
Gohan fights Super Buu and dominates him completely. The Majin who exterminated humanity and defeated Gotenks can barely land a meaningful attack while Gohan remains calm and in control. It is the strongest Gohan has ever been, but Buu’s intelligence is already turning toward another solution besides winning the fight directly.
264 Has He Done It?! Majin Boo's Great Explosion Aired May 17, 1995 canon 📷 280
Unable to defeat Gohan, Buu triggers an enormous explosion and disappears from everyone’s senses. Gohan, Piccolo and the boys search the devastated area, unsure whether the blast destroyed him or was simply another trick. Buu eventually returns after waiting out the situation, revealing that the apparent retreat was preparation for a plan built around the fusion warrior’s power.
265 Boo's Worst Foul Play!! Gotenks is Absorbed?! Aired May 24, 1995 canon 📷 279
Buu provokes Goten and Trunks into fusing again, then springs the trap he prepared while hiding. He absorbs Gotenks and Piccolo at once, gaining Gotenks’ tremendous power and Piccolo’s intelligence along with a new appearance. The advantage flips instantly, and Gohan is now facing an enemy stronger than he is who also understands exactly how he fights.
266 For the Sake of the Entire Universe… Return to Life, Son Goku Aired May 31, 1995 canon 📷 280
Gohan is overwhelmed by the Gotenks-absorbed Buu while the fusion’s thirty-minute limit becomes the only hope keeping the gap from being permanent. In the Sacred World of the Kais, Old Kai gives up his own life so Goku can return to the living world and help. Before Goku leaves, the Potara earrings are offered as the one technique capable of creating a fighter stronger than either Saiyan alone.
267 A One Time Only Miracle… Will the Super Combination With Gohan Come About? Aired Jun 7, 1995 canon 📷 280
Goku returns to Earth carrying the Potara and tries to reach Gohan before Buu can finish him. The plan is simple in theory: each puts on one earring and the two fuse permanently. Buu ruins it by absorbing Gohan before the earrings can be joined, leaving Goku alone against a form of Buu carrying the power of nearly everyone they hoped to save.
268 Merged!! Vegeta's Pride and Goku's Rage Aired Jun 28, 1995 canon 📷 280
Vegeta is temporarily returned from the afterlife and reunites with Goku in the middle of Earth’s worst crisis. He refuses fusion when he first learns what the Potara require, but Goku forces him to confront what Buu has done to Bulma, Trunks and the planet. Vegeta finally accepts the earring, and the two rivals merge into Vegetto.
269 Magnificent Power!! Vegetto Surpasses the Ultimate Aired Jul 5, 1995 canon 📷 280
Vegetto immediately demonstrates why the Potara were worth Vegeta swallowing his pride. Even Buu with Gohan absorbed cannot match the fused Saiyan’s speed, strength or control, while Vegetto deliberately needles him into greater frustration. For the first time since becoming Super Buu, the monster is fighting somebody who can treat his strongest form like a game.
270 A Fissure Between Dimensions!! Has Boo Snapped?! Aired Jul 12, 1995 canon 📷 279
Buu’s rage distorts the world around him, tearing open dimensional fissures as the energy of the absorbed fighters pushes against Vegetto’s overwhelming advantage. Vegetto refuses to let the phenomenon spiral out of control and attacks hard enough to force Buu back into the fight. The fusion is not merely stronger; it is stable enough to manage power that is beginning to damage reality itself.
271 The Ace Up Boo's Sleeve!! You Become a Hard Candy Aired Jul 19, 1995 canon 📷 279
Buu turns Vegetto into candy, expecting transformation magic to solve the problem strength could not. Instead, the tiny piece of candy keeps Vegetto’s power and beats Buu around the battlefield while being almost impossible to hit. Buu finally changes him back, only to face the same impossible opponent again and become desperate enough to try absorption.
272 A Hero is Lost?! Vegetto is Absorbed Aired Jul 26, 1995 canon 📷 279
Vegetto deliberately allows Buu to absorb him, surrounding himself with an energy barrier so he will not be integrated like the others. Once inside the Majin, the Potara fusion unexpectedly ends and Goku and Vegeta become separate people again. Their goal is no longer to defeat Buu from the outside but to recover Gohan, Goten, Trunks and Piccolo from within his body.
273 A Demonic Maze!! What is There Inside Boo's Belly?! Aired Aug 2, 1995 canon 📷 280
Goku and Vegeta move through Buu’s bizarre internal world, following traces of the people he absorbed while dealing with the body itself as hostile terrain. They find the others suspended in organic pods rather than fully gone, proving the rescue plan can work. The challenge becomes reaching everyone and escaping before Buu’s internal defenses realize what is happening.
274 Nightmares or Illusions?! Goku and Gohan's Father-Son Confrontation Aired Aug 9, 1995 canon 📷 280
The journey carries Goku and Vegeta into Buu’s mind, where they are confronted by false versions of Gohan, Gotenks and Piccolo created from the Majin’s memories. The illusions force them into fights against people they came inside to save, turning Buu’s head into a literal mind trap. Once they recognize the deception, they continue searching for the real absorbed fighters.
275 The Majin's Secret!! Two More Boo's Inside of Boo Aired Aug 16, 1995 canon 📷 280
Goku and Vegeta locate the real Gohan, Goten, Trunks and Piccolo and begin cutting them free from Buu’s internal pods. Deeper inside they also find the round Majin Buu, still connected to Super Buu as a separate presence. Vegeta decides to remove him as well despite Goku’s warning that nobody knows what separating Buu from himself will actually do.
276 Where is the Exit?! Escape From a Collapsing Boo Aired Aug 23, 1995 canon 📷 279
Vegeta tears Good Buu free, and the entire interior begins collapsing as Super Buu’s body reacts violently to the loss. Goku and Vegeta gather the rescued fighters and race for an exit while the Majin outside shrinks through a series of older forms. They escape just before the transformation finishes, leaving behind the small original Buu whose lack of restraint is more dangerous than his size suggests.
277 Earth Disappears!! Boo's Reverse-Transformation of Evil Aired Sep 6, 1995 canon 📷 280
Kid Buu wastes no time proving what kind of creature he is. He creates an enormous energy ball and destroys Earth outright, killing Gohan, Goten, Trunks, Piccolo and almost everyone else before Goku and Supreme Kai can save more than Vegeta, Dende, Mr. Satan and the unconscious Good Buu. The planet the series spent decades protecting disappears in seconds.
278 Boo's Assault!! A Conclusion in the Kaioshin Realm Aired Sep 13, 1995 canon 📷 279
Kid Buu destroys other worlds looking for the fighters who escaped him, then finds Goku and Vegeta in the Sacred World of the Kais. The Kais offer Potara again, but Vegeta destroys his earring and Goku follows, choosing to face the final Majin as individual Saiyans rather than fuse. Kid Buu arrives, and the last battlefield becomes a world built to survive the damage they are about to cause.
279 Seize the Future!! A Decisive Battle With the Universe at Stake Aired Sep 20, 1995 canon 📷 280
Goku takes the first turn against Kid Buu and escalates into Super Saiyan 3 as the fight grows serious. Kid Buu absorbs punishment, regenerates and attacks with the joy of something that has no plan beyond destruction. Goku appears capable of matching him, but the living body using Super Saiyan 3 is burning through energy much faster than it did when Goku was dead.
280 Vegeta Takes Off His Hat!! Goku, You are No. 1 Aired Oct 18, 1995 canon 📷 279
Vegeta watches Goku fight Kid Buu and finally puts his rivalry into words: Goku became the stronger warrior not because he needed to prove himself, but because he kept fighting to surpass his own limits. The admission does not end Vegeta’s pride; it changes what that pride means. Meanwhile Goku continues forcing Super Saiyan 3 toward a finish his body is becoming less able to deliver.
281 Pull Through, Vegeta!! One Life-Threatening Minute Aired Nov 1, 1995 canon 📷 280
Goku asks Vegeta to hold Kid Buu for one minute while he gathers enough Super Saiyan 3 power to destroy him completely. Vegeta steps in despite knowing the gap and is beaten nearly to death over and over while the clock crawls forward. The plan fails anyway when Goku discovers that instead of gathering power, his living body has been losing it.
282 Don't You Pick on Satan!! The Original Boo is Revived Aired Nov 8, 1995 canon 📷 280
Kid Buu nearly finishes Vegeta, but Mr. Satan’s interference creates just enough confusion to save him. Then Good Buu wakes and attacks his original evil counterpart, giving Goku and Vegeta an ally who can regenerate and keep Kid Buu occupied. The final battle becomes a strange relay between gods, Saiyans, a former villain and the ordinary world champion nobody expected to matter this much.
283 Vegeta's Secret Plan!! Porunga and the Two Wishes Aired Nov 15, 1995 canon 📷 280
Vegeta changes the plan completely and asks the Namekians to use Porunga. The first wishes restore Earth and bring back the people killed since the World Martial Arts Tournament, giving the planet its population and fighters again while leaving the truly evil excluded. Vegeta saves the final wish because his real strategy depends on the resurrected Earth doing something its people have never knowingly done before.
284 A Last Hope!! We'll Make a Huge Genki-Dama Aired Nov 22, 1995 canon 📷 280
Goku begins forming a Genki-Dama from the energy of the restored people of Earth. Vegeta speaks to the planet and asks everyone to raise their hands, but most people do not recognize his voice and refuse to trust a demand coming from the sky. The technique can end Kid Buu, but for once the problem is not Goku producing enough power; it is convincing ordinary people to give it.
285 Ultra Impressive!! The Genki-Dama From Everyone is Finished Aired Nov 29, 1995 mixed 📷 280
The Genki-Dama remains too small until Mr. Satan takes over the appeal. Earth’s population recognizes its champion instantly and raises its hands for him, pouring enough energy into Goku’s attack to create the weapon Vegeta envisioned. Mr. Satan’s reputation was built on a lie about Cell, but in the final crisis that same reputation becomes one of the reasons Earth can actually be saved.
286 Son Goku is the Strongest After All!! Majin Boo is Annihilated Aired Dec 13, 1995 mixed 📷 280
Good Buu and Mr. Satan get Vegeta out of the line of fire, allowing Goku to launch the completed Genki-Dama at Kid Buu. The exhausted Goku cannot overpower Buu’s resistance until Porunga’s final wish restores his strength, letting him turn Super Saiyan and drive the attack through. As Kid Buu disappears, Goku asks that he someday return as a good person so they can meet and fight again.
287 Peace Returns!! Majin Boo, the Champion of Justice?! Aired Dec 20, 1995 mixed 📷 279
Earth returns to peace with Good Buu now living under Mr. Satan’s protection. The Dragon Balls are used to erase ordinary people’s memories of Majin Buu so the harmless version can exist without the world hunting him for crimes committed by his other selves. The strangest survivor of the crisis becomes part of the family rather than another enemy waiting for a rematch.
288 You're Late, Goku! Everyone Party!! Aired Jan 10, 1996 mixed 📷 279
Bulma gathers everyone for a long-overdue party, but Goku is late because he stops to protect a nest of dinosaur eggs from a storm and predators. The episode gives the cast room to simply exist together after years of escalating disasters, with Buu now sitting comfortably among people he once terrified. It is the last quiet stop before the series jumps a decade into the future.
289 Grandpa Goku! I Am Pan!! Aired Jan 17, 1996 canon 📷 280
Ten years after Kid Buu’s defeat, Goku is a grandfather and Pan is already showing exactly what kind of family she was born into. The Dragon Team prepares for the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament, where Goku is unusually interested in one unknown ten-year-old contestant. That child is Uub, and Goku knows something about him nobody else at the tournament does yet.
290 I Am Oob! Now 10 Years Old, the Former Majin?! Aired Jan 24, 1996 canon 📷 280
Goku maneuvers the tournament draw so he can fight Uub and then deliberately insults the boy until anger pulls out the power hidden inside him. Uub is the human reincarnation of Kid Buu, but he has none of the Majin’s cruelty and almost none of the training needed to understand his own strength. Goku finally finds the raw potential he hoped the reincarnation would carry.
291 Even Stronger!! Goku's Dream is Super-Huge Aired Jan 31, 1996 canon 📷 280
Goku’s match with Uub convinces him that the boy can become far stronger with proper training. He abandons the tournament, takes Uub with him, and promises to teach him while helping his poor village along the way. Dragon Ball Z ends not with Goku settling down as the strongest man alive, but flying toward another training ground with the next great fighter beside him.

Bardock

The Lone Rebel

The father of Goku and the star of arguably the greatest anime TV special to ever hit cable television. Bardock realized Frieza's betrayal before anyone else and launched a doomed, one-man rebellion to save his race. Wearing his fallen comrade's blood-soaked armband, his tragic final stand was the stuff of absolute legend. He is practically the patron saint of early 2000s dial-up anime music videos.
SG

Son Goku

Primary Protagonist

The gold standard of shonen heroes and the emotional cornerstone of the franchise. From his humble, terrestrial beginnings to the legendary moment he ascends to Super Saiyan on the crumbling surface of Namek, Goku's journey is the defining mythos of a generation. He embodies a pure, unyielding drive for self-improvement. While his relentlessly optimistic and sometimes naive exterior often disarms his foes, it masks a peerless martial arts genius. His sacrifices for Earth are the blueprint every shonen hero since has been measured against.
MR

Master Roshi

The Turtle Hermit

The originator of the iconic Kamehameha wave and the martial arts master who started it all. Even though the power scaling of the Z era quickly left him hanging out at Kame House watching workout tapes, Roshi's teachings are the foundation of everything Goku and Krillin achieved. He's the legendary, deeply flawed sensei who passed the torch to the next generation of Earth's defenders.
CH

Chi-Chi

Matriarch

The fiercest woman on Earth and the only person in the entire universe who can strike genuine terror into the hearts of Goku and Gohan. Chi-Chi is the ultimate anime tiger mom. While the universe is constantly on the brink of annihilation, she is the one desperately trying to make sure Gohan finishes his homework and Goku actually gets a paying job. Her frying pan is arguably a weapon of mass destruction.
BU

Bulma

Genius Inventor

The undisputed brains of the operation. Let's be real: without Bulma, none of this works. She invented the Dragon Radar, reverse-engineered alien spaceships, and literally built a time machine in her backyard. She's completely fearless, routinely yelling at terrifying galactic tyrants and super-powered aliens without breaking a sweat. She was holding the plot together from day one.
KA

Kami

Original Guardian of Earth

The wise, ancient Namekian who served as the original Guardian of Earth. Centuries ago, he purged the evil from his soul to claim his divine throne, inadvertently creating the Demon King Piccolo in the process. Because his life force is directly tied to Piccolo's, if one dies, the other does too. As the creator of Earth's original Dragon Balls, Kami is the spiritual foundation of the entire franchise's mythology.
RA

Raditz

Catalyst Antagonist

The big brother who kicked the door open to the entire Z era! Raditz showed up, casually caught a bullet, dropped the bombshell that Goku was an alien, and completely broke the power scale with his iconic Scouter. He forced the unthinkable: Goku and Piccolo teaming up. While his time on screen was short, he is the ultimate "welcome to the next level" boss fight that changed the franchise forever.
SG

Son Gohan

Successor / Protagonist

The boy burdened with explosive, boundless potential. Gohan's narrative provides a beautiful, tragic subversion of his father's legacy; he is a gentle scholar who does not crave the fight, making his forced ascensions all the more spectacular. The Cell Games remain his magnum opus , a cinematic crescendo where the pacifist finally snaps under the weight of everything he'd been holding back, delivering the iconic Super Saiyan 2 awakening that permanently redefined the series' power scaling and made every kid watching feel something they still can't quite explain.
PI
KR

Krillin

Supporting Protagonist

Goku's lifelong best buddy and the ultimate Earthling underdog. Sure, he might spend a lot of time tossing Senzu beans from the sidelines while the Saiyans go wild, but let's not forget he invented the Destructo Disc! Plus, he managed to win over Android 18, which is arguably the greatest victory in the entire series. Krillin always brings that much-needed relatable, human perspective when the fights start getting completely out of hand.
YA

Yamcha

The Underdog / Meme Legend

The original desert bandit and the internet's favorite punching bag long before memes were even a thing. Look, we all know the infamous Saibaman crater incident, but let's give Yamcha some credit! He brought the Wolf Fang Fist to the table, and you have to respect a guy who consistently shows up to help his friends fight literal planet-busters when he'd probably be much safer just sticking to his professional baseball career.
TS

Tien Shinhan

Dedicated Martial Artist

The guy who simply refused to be left behind by the power creep. Tien is the definition of martial arts discipline. Even when the Saiyans and aliens were throwing around energy that could blow up galaxies, Tien stood his ground. His legendary moment pinning down Semi-Perfect Cell with a relentless barrage of Neo Tri-Beams is easily one of the hypest, most respect-worthy underdog moments you could ever catch on afternoon TV.
CH

Chiaotzu

Telekinetic Fighter / Tien's Companion

A small, pale-skinned martial artist with psychic powers who is the inseparable best friend and training partner of Tien Shinhan. Chiaotzu uses his telekinesis to disrupt enemies and redirect energy. Though frequently outclassed as the series' power levels scale up, his desperate, tragic attempt to blow himself up to take down Nappa is the Saiyan Saga moment that hits hardest on a rewatch.
YA

Yajirobe

Unlikely Savior / Cowardly Samurai

The portly, sword-wielding ronin who would much rather eat a mountain of food than save the universe. Yajirobe is a self-proclaimed coward who spends most fights hiding in the bushes. However, his legacy is immortalized by the single most crucial clutch moment in the Saiyan Saga: sneaking up on a giant Ape Vegeta and slicing his tail off with a katana, proving that sometimes, a coward with a sword is exactly what the universe needs.
NA

Nappa

Saiyan Enforcer

The bald, hulking menace who made Earth's greatest defenders look like absolute amateurs. Nappa was the sheer, terrifying brute force of the Saiyan invasion. He effortlessly wiped out half the main cast while Vegeta just stood in the background smirking. Plus, as the guy who received the scouter reading, he is physically responsible for setting up one of the most quoted lines in anime history: "It's over 9000!"
VE

Vegeta

Deuteragonist / Rival

The Prince of all Saiyans and the subject of perhaps the medium's most meticulously crafted character arc. Introduced as a ruthless, bloodthirsty conqueror, Vegeta's agonizing evolution into a reluctant defender of Earth is one of the most convincing long-form character arcs the medium has ever produced. His towering pride is simultaneously his greatest weapon and his most devastating flaw. To witness his tearful plea to Goku on Namek or his ultimate, blinding sacrifice against Majin Buu is to understand what DBZ was actually about the whole time.

King Kai

Deity of the North Quadrant / Mentor

The eccentric, blue-skinned deity who rules over the North Quadrant of the universe from a tiny, high-gravity planet at the end of Snake Way. King Kai is a master martial artist with a bizarre requirement: you must make him laugh with a bad pun before he will train you. Despite his goofy antics with Bubbles the monkey, he is the genius who taught Goku both the Kaio-Ken and the Spirit Bomb, changing the course of every major battle in Z.
ZA

Zarbon

Frieza's Elite General

Frieza's highly elegant, intelligent, and incredibly vain right-hand general. Zarbon despises anything ugly and prides himself on his handsome appearance. However, he hides a dark secret: when pushed to his limits, he can transform into a hideous, reptilian beast of pure, brutal muscle. His shocking, monstrous transformation on Namek gave Vegeta one of the most violent, one-sided beatdowns of his life.
GU

Guldo

Ginyu Force Psychic / Time-Stopper

The small, four-eyed green alien who is the physically weakest member of the Ginyu Force, but arguably possesses the most terrifying abilities. Guldo can literally freeze time for as long as he can hold his breath, and utilizes psychic telekinesis to bind his targets and impale them with sharp objects. While he is often treated as the butt of the joke by his comrades, his supernatural tricks nearly spell doom for Gohan and Krillin.
RE

Recoome

Ginyu Force Heavy Hitter

The towering, orange-haired powerhouse of the Ginyu Force. Recoome treats terrifying, life-or-death battles like a playground game, gleefully performing goofy, theatrical poses and naming his attacks ridiculous things like the "Recoome Eraser Gun." Despite his clownish behavior, his raw physical durability and strength are legendary, effortlessly breaking the Z-Fighters' bodies on Namek before Goku's arrival.
BU

Burter

Ginyu Force Speedster / "The Blue Hurricane"

The massive, blue-skinned speedster of the Ginyu Force who proudly boasts that he is the "fastest in the universe." Despite his colossal height, Burter moves with blinding speed, leaving afterimages that baffle his opponents. Alongside his partner Jeice, he forms a deadly tag-team combination, though his absolute speed-based arrogance is shattered when Goku easily outpaces him without even trying.
JE

Jeice

Ginyu Force Sub-Leader / "The Red Magma"

The red-skinned, white-haired sub-leader of the Ginyu Force, hailing from Planet Brench. Known as "The Red Magma," Jeice acts as Captain Ginyu's reliable right-hand man and the team's primary strategist (when they aren't busy posing). He specializes in fire-based energy attacks, most notably his signature Crusher Ball, and coordinates deadly team-up maneuvers with his best friend and partner, Burter.
CG

Captain Ginyu

Elite Mercenary / Choreographer

The undisputed king of flamboyant battle poses. When Ginyu and his elite mercenary squad touched down on Namek, they brought this incredibly weird, high-energy sentai vibe right to the middle of a deadly serious galactic turf war. From his devastating Body Change technique that completely flipped the script on Goku, to accidentally turning himself into a Namekian frog, Ginyu was pure, chaotic, must-watch television.
DE

Dende

Guardian of Earth

The brave little Namekian who stepped up when his people needed him most. Surviving the absolute horror of Frieza's invasion, Dende's healing abilities were the only reason the Z Fighters survived long enough for Goku to arrive. Taking over the mantle as the new Guardian of Earth and upgrading the Dragon Balls made him one of the most underappreciated MVPs of the later sagas.
FR

Frieza

Primary Antagonist

The galactic tyrant and the ultimate catalyst for the modern Saiyan legend. Frieza is the benchmark against which anime villains are still measured. His cold, polite sociopathy and terrifying sequence of multi-stage transformations induced genuine dread during the historic Namek Saga. As the architect of the Saiyan genocide, the poetic justice of his eventual defeat at the hands of the very race he sought to exterminate is one of the most satisfying payoffs the series ever delivered.
FT

Future Trunks

Time-Traveling Hero

The mysterious teen who showed up out of absolutely nowhere, casually went Super Saiyan, and sliced Frieza into cold cuts. With the giant sword, the purple hair, and that iconic Capsule Corp jacket, Trunks brought a massive wave of cool factor to the show. Coming from a ruined future, he carried this serious, desperate energy that completely changed the vibe of the series and set the stage for the legendary Android Saga.
DG

Dr. Gero

SPOILER!

Red Ribbon Scientist / Android 20

The brilliant, vengeful chief scientist of the defunct Red Ribbon Army. Driven by a lifelong hatred of Goku for destroying his military empire, Gero spent decades spying on the Z-Fighters to build the perfect mechanical assassins. To achieve immortality and survive long enough to see his revenge realized, he even transplanted his own brain into a cybernetic body, becoming Android 20. He is the ultimate catalyst for the entire Android and Cell Sagas.
A1

Android 17

Deadly Cybernetic Rebel

The twin brother of Android 18, similarly kidnapped and cybernetically modified by Dr. Gero. Sporting his signature orange scarf and a rebellious, park-ranger-in-training vibe, 17 is a deadly wild card with an infinite power supply. His legendary, grinding war of attrition with Piccolo on an island is one of the absolute best choreographic highlights of the entire Android Saga.
A1

Android 18

Reformed Antagonist

The effortlessly cool cyborg who showed up, casually dismantled the Prince of all Saiyans, and then went shopping. With her infinite stamina and that iconic denim-on-denim outfit, 18 brought a totally different flavor of swagger to the Android Saga. She went from terrifying Earth's special forces to settling down with Krillin, and remains one of the most effortlessly cool characters the franchise ever produced.
A1

Android 16

The Gentle Giant

The towering, stoic redhead who really just wanted to hang out in the forest and look at birds. Despite being programmed exclusively to murder Goku, 16 turned out to be the moral compass of the Cell Games. His final, desperate speech to Gohan about protecting the life he loved still hits like a gut punch thirty years later. His tragic end was the exact spark needed to ignite Gohan's legendary Super Saiyan 2 transformation.
CE

Cell

Major Antagonist

The ultimate biological android who kept us all completely glued to the screen as he absorbed his way to his "Perfect" form. Cell was so incredibly confident and smug about his new power level that he decided to host his own televised martial arts tournament just to flex on Earth's defenders. He brought a calculating, psychological edge to his fights that made the Cell Games required viewing.
SG

Son Goten

Next-Gen Prodigy

The spitting image of his father and Trunks's partner in crime. Goten brought a massive wave of lighthearted, kid-brother energy to the incredibly dark Buu Saga. The fact that he managed to figure out the legendary Super Saiyan transformation completely by accident at the age of seven while training with his mom is both hilarious and proof that the Goku bloodline was done messing around.
VI

Videl

Fierce Fighter / Ally

The tough-as-nails daughter of Hercule who absolutely refused to just be a helpless bystander. Videl brought a phenomenal high-school-detective energy to the early Buu Saga. She actually pieced together the Great Saiyaman's identity, demanded Gohan teach her how to manipulate ki, and took a brutal beating at the World Martial Arts Tournament without ever backing down. A total powerhouse who grounded the cosmic craziness with some real grit.
H(

Hercule (Mr. Satan)

Earth's "Champion"

The undisputed World Martial Arts Champion , at least, as far as the general public knows! Hercule is the ultimate hype man and the necessary comedic relief when the cosmic stakes get way too heavy. Watching him try to logic his way out of dealing with super-powered aliens using smoke and mirrors is classic television. But let's give the Champ his due: without his ability to rally the people of Earth, the Spirit Bomb against Kid Buu would have completely fizzled out!
SK

Supreme Kai (Shin)

Celestial Guardian of the Universe

The highest-ranking deity in the universe, who descended to Earth in disguise to warn the Z-Fighters about the awakening of Majin Buu. Shin brought an immense sense of cosmic mystery and scale to the early Buu Saga, initially intimidating even Piccolo with his divine presence. While the sheer, ridiculous power scaling of the Saiyans quickly left him looking perpetually shocked on the sidelines, his knowledge of the cosmos and the Potara earrings was vital to saving reality.
BA

Babidi

Evil Wizard / Summoner of Buu

A wicked, parasitic alien wizard who inherited his father Bibidi's dark magic. Babidi's primary power is his ability to exploit the hidden malice in the hearts of powerful warriors, placing them under his mind-control "Majin" spell to boost their strength. Despite his frail, insect-like appearance, his manipulative schemes , most notably corrupting Vegeta , directly lead to the resurrection of the ancient terror, Majin Buu.
DA

Dabura

King of the Demon Realm

The towering, sophisticated King of the Demon Realm who fell under the mind-control of the wizard Babidi. Dabura is a menacing gentleman who fights with a giant broadsword, darkness magic, and a highly dangerous spit that instantly turns anyone it touches into solid stone. His clash with Gohan in the rocky wastelands served as a stark, tense reminder that the threats of the Buu Saga were unlike anything the Z-Fighters had faced before.
MB
GO

Gotenks

Fusion Prodigy

The absolute embodiment of hyperactive kid energy fused with world-breaking power. When Goten and Trunks successfully performed the Fusion Dance, we got an unbelievably arrogant, loudmouthed powerhouse who treated fighting a world-ending threat like a playground game. Yelling out ridiculous move names like "Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack" and "Galactic Donut," Gotenks made the terrifying Buu saga feel like a wild Saturday morning fever dream.
VE

Vegito

SPOILER!

The Ultimate Potara Fusion

The mind-bogglingly powerful fusion of Goku and Vegeta, brought to life via the sacred Potara Earrings. Combining Goku's fighting genius with Vegeta's ruthless strategic intellect , and sporting a double-layered voice that sounded like the universe clearing its throat , Vegito spent his screen time completely embarrassing Super Buu. He fought with his hands in his pockets, turned into a piece of hard candy, and still managed to dominate the battlefield.

Old Kai (Rou Kaioshin)

SPOILER!

Ancient Deity / Mentor

The ancient, deeply eccentric deity who accidentally got sealed inside the Z-Sword because Beerus was having a petty argument with him millions of years ago. He is the entire reason Gohan achieves his "Ultimate/Mystic" state without needing to turn his hair yellow, bypassing the entire Super Saiyan power scale. Furthermore, he sacrifices his literal remaining life force to give Goku his soul back for the final battle against Buu. Leaving him out makes the endgame lore look entirely incomplete.

Fansub & Scanlation History

A Full Catalog, $6 a Tape, PayPal Accepted

Confirmed via an Archived September 2000 Catalog Page

Darbura's Fansubs ran a mail-order VHS tape service specifically for Dragon Ball Z and GT, confirmed via an archived catalog page dated September 3, 2000. Pricing had just dropped to $6 per tape, with PayPal accepted and a 1-14 day turnaround. The catalog included specific episode ranges spanning early Z (episodes 1-5) through the Cell Games era (196-199), the OVAs, the 10th Anniversary Special, and a GT special set.

Anime Labs, Confirmed by a February 2001 Trade Catalog

Anime Labs, a real VHS-era fansub group, covered extensive stretches of Dragon Ball Z, confirmed via an archived trade catalog dated February 11, 2001, spanning episodes 26 through 270 across multiple listed ranges.

NGN's Coverage Extended Further Than First Documented

The same February 2001 trade catalog independently confirms NGN's Dragon Ball coverage across a wide range, episodes 26 through 149, corroborating and extending what was already documented on this page.

E. Monsoon, Already Credited on Two Other Shows

E. Monsoon, already documented on this site for Neon Genesis Evangelion and Gundam Wing, also covered Dragon Ball Movie 3, confirmed via the same February 2001 trade catalog, a third real credit for the same group.

S-VHS Tape Trading & The 1990s Chinatown Raw Pipeline

Generation-Loss VHS Tapes · Plot Summaries Over Full Translation

Before BitTorrent or broadband internet, Western fans experienced Dragon Ball Z through physical S-VHS tape trading networks. High-generation VHS tapes of raw Fuji TV broadcasts were mailed across North America and copied on dual-deck VCRs, while fans followed along using Curtis Hoffmann's plot summaries, hosted primarily on his GeoCities site and cross-posted to Usenet groups like rec.arts.anime and alt.fan.dragonball, years before Funimation completed its US television broadcast. [UNCONFIRMED]: a site referenced as "DBZ-Uncensored" run by someone named Daisuke could not be verified here and should not be treated as established until sourced.

Anime Junkies [AJ]: The RealMedia & DivX Digital Shift

IRC XDCC Distribution · Prolific, Not Beloved
In the late 1990s, Anime Junkies [AJ] was one of the groups that digitized raw S-VHS captures of Dragon Ball Z into low-bitrate RealMedia (.rm) and early DivX AVI files, distributing them through IRC XDCC bots. They were also, by the account of fans who lived through it and a contemporary Anime News Network editorial, notorious for rough encode quality and an attitude that made them a group people specifically warned each other away from, even while relying on their releases for late-arc episodes years before Cartoon Network caught up.

Early IRC Digital Subbers & Unverified Scene Outfits

Pre-BitTorrent Era · IRC #dbz Distribution

Alongside Anime Junkies, a handful of short-lived IRC groups and fan translators produced early digital subtitled rips of DBZ movies and late-series episodes between 1998 and 2002. [UNCONFIRMED]: exact founding dates, complete release indexes, and roster details for these smaller outfits remain incomplete in surviving web archives. This entry is sourced to period forum and IRC chat archives, not a group history page or AniDB record, and should be treated as a lead for further digging.

Seed of Might [SoM]: Modern Broadcast Audio & Video Preservation

Untampered 4:3 Masters · Original Fuji TV Broadcast Audio Restoration

Decades after DBZ's broadcast ended, Seed of Might [SoM] formed to preserve untampered historical masters of Dragon Ball Z. Prompted by official home video releases that heavily cropped native 4:3 animation into 16:9 widescreen and applied aggressive digital noise reduction, SoM restores uncropped 4:3 video transfers paired with high-fidelity original Fuji TV broadcast audio.

Doyama's Dragon Ball Project

Pre-1992 · Usenet & FTP

Founded by Jason Doyama, one of the earliest scanlation projects ever documented, working the same MS Paint text-over-scan method years before IRC-era groups formalized the process. Doyama closed the project down after Viz licensed the manga, a real instance of a group honoring the license rather than continuing to run. This same project is documented in full on this franchise's original Dragon Ball entry.

The Daily Dragon Ball Chapters

Founded by Eric Phan in September 1997, growing into one of the largest Dragon Ball manga repositories of the pre-2000 scene before merging into Planet Namek in 2000.

This Is Where "Honored the Code" Actually Applies

Unlike the anime side of this page, where DBZ was already licensed before any release group started, the manga scene genuinely lived through a licensing moment. Doyama's project and the Translated DBZ Manga Page both shut down specifically because Viz picked up the license, real instances of groups stepping aside rather than continuing to run.

Mike and AK of Troy, Personally, Chapter 512

Confirmed via a Real Scanned Page Credit

A surviving scanned page, chapter 512, Buu saga material, carries the direct credit "Scanned, Edited, and Translated by Mike and AK of Troy," Toriyama's World's two confirmed founders working the material personally, not just overseeing the group. Real evidence the founders themselves stayed hands-on this close to the manga's actual ending, since Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z ran as one continuous Weekly Shonen Jump serialization before being split into two titles for the West.

Curtis Hoffmann's Plot Summaries (1990s)

Dragon Ball Mirage on GeoCities · rec.arts.anime & alt.fan.dragonball

Long before digital manga scanlation existed, Western fans followed Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z through Curtis Hoffmann's plot summaries, written after he moved to Tokyo in 1992. Hoffmann began with Dragon Ball manga summaries and took over writing Dragon Ball Z anime summaries around 1994 to 1995. His work was hosted on his GeoCities site, Dragon Ball Mirage, and cross-posted to Usenet groups including rec.arts.anime and alt.fan.dragonball, becoming the de facto English-language guide to the series years before any official localization existed.

Toriyama's World: Digital Scanlation & Strict Honor Code

Tankōbon Flatbed Scanning · Dropped Immediately on Viz License

In the late 1990s, Toriyama's World [TW] established a digital scanlation pipeline for Akira Toriyama's works, producing digital scanlations of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z from imported physical tankōbon volumes. When Viz Media expanded its North American publishing push for the manga, Toriyama's World honored its own code, pulling Dragon Ball and DBZ scanlation releases from its servers to encourage fans toward official Viz releases.

SnoopyCool & The Pre-Scanlation Hosting Era

MS Paint Translations · Early Web Downloads

Before formalizing into a premier scanlation group in 2001, SnoopyCool operated as an all-in-one fan site directly hosting DBZ episode downloads. Unlike other series where groups fought for unlicensed access, DBZ was already broadcast on US television by 1996; scene groups were fighting for accuracy, getting the real, unedited, original audio release out from under heavy TV edits.

The Long Tail of Dropped Attempts (AniDB Ledger)

Kodocha-Team · RaX · A-FanRips · FQE · Utsukushii-Raws
AniDB archives tell an honest story: dozens of scene groups launched 291-episode uncut DBZ releases between 2004 and the mid-2010s, only to collapse under the sheer weight of a 291-episode commitment. Most groups dropped out short of the finish line, leaving behind fragmented arc releases.

Anime-Supreme [A-S] & DBNL Complete the Marathon

September 2012 (A-S) · December 2016 (DBNL)

Anime-Supreme [A-S] delivered a complete, DVD-sourced 291-episode release in September 2012. Four years later in December 2016, DBNL released their complete DVD batch, earning the highest community rating in the archive and becoming the definitive benchmark for uncut DBZ for years.

iKaos-SoM & The Seed of Might (SoM) Remaster

December 2025 (iKaos-SoM) · July 2026 (SoM)

The fight for uncut DBZ didn't end; it evolved into high-fidelity preservation. In December 2025, iKaos-SoM logged a complete 291-episode Blu-ray/DVD release, followed in July 2026 by the SoM (Seed of Might) remaster. Sitting on the exact same historical ledger as DBNL and Anime-Supreme, this project represents the ultimate culmination of the 20-year fight for uncompromised DBZ restoration.

The 1996 Saban Syndication Era & Heavy Broadcast Editing

Funimation / Saban / Ocean Group

Funimation licensed Dragon Ball Z in 1995 and partnered with Saban Entertainment and Vancouver's Ocean Group to distribute the series in US television syndication starting in 1996. To satisfy syndication broadcast guidelines, early episodes were heavily edited: blood was digitally painted over, violent deaths were softened, and Shuki Levy composed an upbeat synth-rock score to replace the original soundtrack. Syndication was canceled after 53 edited episodes due to low ratings in early-morning timeslots.

Pioneer's Uncut Home Video Releases (1998–2000)

First Legal Unedited DBZ Releases in North America
While TV broadcasts remained heavily edited, Pioneer Entertainment partnered with Funimation to release unedited, bilingual DVD and VHS cuts of the first three DBZ movies between 1998 and 2000. These releases gave Western fandom its first legal access to unedited Japanese audio with English subtitles, a real bridge between TV-only viewers and the hardcore fansub community.

The 2007 "Orange Brick" Widescreen Backlash & Archival Revival

16:9 Cropping Controversy · Digital Noise Reduction

In February 2007, Funimation released the Dragon Ball Z Season 1 "Orange Brick" DVD box set. To appeal to HDTV owners, Funimation cropped the native 4:3 animation to 16:9 widescreen and applied heavy digital noise reduction that smeared fine line art and grain. The backlash was significant enough that it drove a real fan preservation movement within the DBZ community, one that directly feeds into projects like Seed of Might today.
