Details & Synopsis
Before Naruto. Before Bleach. Before the Big Three had a name. There was Dragon Ball Z, and for an entire generation of Western kids in the 1990s, Dragon Ball Z was simply anime. The category and the example were the same thing.

Produced by Toei Animation and directed by Daisuke Nishio, Dragon Ball Z aired on Fuji TV from 1989 to 1996, 291 episodes following the adult Goku and his allies across four escalating sagas: the Saiyan invasion, Frieza on Namek, the androids and Cell, and the decade-spanning weight of Majin Buu. Akira Toriyama's power scaling, once a comedy mechanic in the original Dragon Ball, became mythology here. Transformations as revelation. The Super Saiyan moment. Gohan vs. Cell in a fight still being argued about. The power level debate started here, and it has never actually ended.

In the West the story gets more complicated, and more interesting. Ocean Productions dubbed it first, a version truncated, edited, scored by Bruce Faulconer's electric guitar-driven replacement soundtrack that an entire generation now considers inseparable from the show itself. Cartoon Network ran it in syndication. Toonami ran it in the afternoon slot that trained a demographic to expect anime at 4pm. Kids who had never heard the word fansub knew every Kamehameha, every Spirit Bomb, every moment of dead air in a Frieza fight that took four episodes to cover forty five seconds.

Funimation eventually acquired full rights and started over: the uncut version, the original Kikuchi score, the complete run. Then came Dragon Ball Z Kai, the remaster that trimmed the series to its canonical bones, cutting the extended powering up sequences that had always been the show's most honest flaw.

The Seed of Might project sits apart from all of it. 291 episodes, fully color and audio graded, built as a preservation effort rather than a rebroadcast or a resale. It exists because the complete series deserved that kind of treatment while the actual licensing rights were still tangled up in dispute, not because it was ever meant to compete with an official release. This site documents that project's history as part of the record, the same way it documents every other chapter of how this show reached the West.

The power level arguments are still happening. The show is still here.

Technique Debut Directory

What Counts as a Debut Here?

This directory tracks the anime's first clear use or introduction of a technique, not every later variation or every time somebody else learns the same move.

Episode links should point to the actual anime episode record. If a move is teased, named later or appears differently across cuts/dubs, the entry should favor what a viewer can actually identify on screen.

Archival note

First on-screen appearances in Dragon Ball Z, ordered by episode. Each entry links to its debut episode when episode rows exist. Pair with gallery stills in Manage Lore for the framed card layout. This page is chronological; Technique Encyclopedia is thematic (schools, classes, variants).
Dragon Ball Z — Ep 4: Piccolo’s Plan @ 15:03

Special Beam Cannon

Makankosappo · Piercing Kinetic Drill · Piccolo, Cell

Piccolo's ultimate lethal innovation, engineered specifically to pierce Goku's defenses. By focusing index and middle fingers against the forehead, ki is compressed past the user's standard power ceiling over several minutes. When released, a straight penetrating beam wrapped in a spiral energy helix drills directly through target armor.

Debut: Ep 004 - Piccolo's Trump Card! Gohan is a Crybaby

Dragon Ball Z Ep 28: Ferocity of the Saiyan! God and Piccolo Both Die! @ 07:34

Demon Flash

Masenko · Dual-Palm Overhead Blast · Son Gohan, Piccolo

Gohan's initial signature energy wave. The user places both hands above the forehead with palms facing forward, charging a golden reservoir of ki before thrusting hands downward to fire a rapid, concussive beam. Taught to Gohan by Piccolo during their wilderness survival training.

Debut: Ep 028 - Ferocity of the Saiyan! God and Piccolo Both Die!

Dragon Ball Z — Ep 29: Father is Awesome! The Ultimate Finishing Technique: Kaio-Ken @ 15:01

King Kai's Fist

Kaioken · Metabolic Multiplier State · Son Goku

A volatile power amplification art taught by King Kai. Kaioken forces a sudden surge of ki through the body, glowing with a crimson aura and multiplying strength, speed, and sensory reflexes (2x, 3x, 4x, up to 20x). The severe downside: it rapidly tears muscle tissue apart and can destroy the caster if sustained too long.

Debut: Ep 029 - Father is Awesome! The Ultimate Finishing Technique: Kaio-Ken

Dragon Ball Z Ep 32: Battle Power Times Ten!! Vegeta's Great Transformation @ 16:56

Spirit Bomb

Genki Dama · Environmental Energy Gathering · Son Goku

The ultimate weapon of pure light taught by King Kai. Goku raises his arms to draw tiny fragments of life force from surrounding grass, atmosphere, oceans, and living beings into an ultra-dense sphere. Because it draws on natural life energy, it can only be safely controlled by a pure-hearted caster and inflicts maximum damage on evil entities.

Debut: Ep 032 - Battle Power Times Ten!! Vegeta's Great Transformation

Dragon Ball Z — Ep 31: Now, Goku! A Final Technique with Everything on the Line @ 19:33

Power Ball

Buru Tsu Shosha · Artificial Lunar Radiance · Vegeta

A specialized Saiyan military technique. By combining oxygen from the atmosphere with a compressed ball of internal ki, the user creates an artificial miniature moon that emits over 17,000,000 Brute Waves, allowing tail-bearing Saiyans to trigger Great Ape transformations on worlds without moons.

Debut: Ep 031 - Now, Goku! A Final Technique with Everything on the Line

Dragon Ball Z Ep 95: Transformed At Last!! The Legendary Super Saiyan, Son Goku @ 21:12

Super Saiyan 1 Transformation

Super Saiya-jin · Genetic Metamorphosis · Son Goku, Vegeta, Son Gohan, Future Trunks

The ancient prophecy realized on Namek. Triggered when a powerful Saiyan experiences extreme emotional rage while maintaining an established base power threshold. The transformation turns the hair golden, eyes turquoise, and surrounds the body in a fiery golden aura - multiplying base power fifty-fold.

Debut: Ep 095 - Transformed At Last!! The Legendary Super Saiyan, Son Goku

Dragon Ball Z Ep 130: No. 20's Defiant Smile… The Secret of Doctor Gero @ 09:46

Big Bang Attack

Big Bang Attaku · Compressed Ki Ordnance · Vegeta

Vegeta's signature Super Saiyan execution. Extending an open palm forward with fingers splayed, the user condenses a golden aura into a blinding, basketball-sized sphere of compressed ki that detonates upon contact in an apocalyptic mushroom cloud.

Debut: Ep 130 - No. 20's Defiant Smile… The Secret of Doctor Gero

Dragon Ball Z Ep 237: For Those Whom He Loves… Vegeta Perishes!! @ 22:17

Final Explosion

SPOILER!

Saishyuu Saigo no Waza · Life-Force Detonation · Majin Vegeta

Vegeta's ultimate sacrificial strike against Fat Buu. Converting his entire soul, flesh, and remaining spiritual ki into a blinding golden sphere of pure destruction, Vegeta detonates a dome of energy spanning kilometers wide - leaving his body petrified into stone.

Debut: Ep 237 - For Those Whom He Loves… Vegeta Perishes!!

Dragon Ball Z Ep 245: An Astounding, Great Transformation!! Super Saiyan 3 @ 12:20

Super Saiyan 3 Transformation

Super Saiya-jin San · Maximum Ki Unlocking · Son Goku, Gotenks

The absolute limit of single-entity Super Saiyan evolution. Unlocks 100% of latent biological potential, growing knee-length golden hair and erasing eyebrows while emitting intense bio-electricity. Yields god-tier strength, but drains bodily stamina so rapidly it cannot be sustained for long periods in a living body.

Debut: Ep 245 - An Astounding, Great Transformation!! Super Saiyan 3

Dragon Ball Z Ep 247: Absurdly Awful Looking?! The Special Training Transformation Pose @ 21:25

Metamoran Fusion Dance

Fusion · Biometric Entity Synthesis · Gotenks (Goten & Trunks)

A 30-minute fusion technique learned from the Metamorans. Two fighters of identical power levels must execute a perfectly synchronized 3-step dance ending in fingertip contact while shouting "Fusion... HA!". Yields a brand-new entity with exponential power; minor stance flaws result in emaciated or obese failures.

Debut: Ep 247 - Absurdly Awful Looking?! The Special Training Transformation Pose

Dragon Ball Z Ep 258: I'm Going Like I Mean It!! A Wide-Open Super Gotenks @ 21:25

Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack

Supa Gosuto Kamikaze Attaku · Volatile Ectoplasmic Clones · Gotenks

A bizarre, highly volatile fusion technique. Gotenks spits out translucent, sentience-bearing ghost figures that share his personality. Each ghost acts as a kinetic landmine - touching any physical surface or target triggers an immediate, massive explosion.

Debut: Ep 258 - I'm Going Like I Mean It!! A Wide-Open Super Gotenks

Dragon Ball Z Ep 268: Merged!! Vegeta's Pride and Goku's Rage @ 21:50

Potara Earring Fusion

Potara Fusion · Divine Permanent Union · Vegito (Goku & Vegeta)

An absolute divine fusion utilizing the Sacred Kai Earrings. When two individuals place matching Potara earrings on opposite ears, their bodies are magnetically pulled together into an instant, flawless fusion. Multiplies power far beyond the Fusion Dance without requiring matching base strength.

Debut: Ep 268 - Merged!! Vegeta's Pride and Goku's Rage
