Richard Mardukas is the veteran executive officer of the Tuatha de Danaan and the experienced naval professional standing beside Tessa on the bridge. He is formal, cautious and initially skeptical of the idea that a teenager should carry so much command responsibility, yet his loyalty to Tessa becomes absolute once he sees what she can do. Mardukas handles the procedural and operational discipline that keeps the submarine functioning while Tessa concentrates on the larger tactical picture. His stern manner also makes him an amusing contrast to the younger crew, especially whenever their personal lives begin bleeding into military business. When the Tuatha de Danaan is under real threat, however, the comedy disappears. Mardukas is exactly the kind of officer Tessa needs beside her: experienced enough to advise her and disciplined enough to follow when the decision is hers.

Gauron escapes captivity with help from traitors inside MITHRIL, takes Kaname hostage and seizes control of the Tuatha de Danaan's command systems.
The Breakdown
This is not a normal boarding action. Gauron isolates much of the crew inside their own submarine while using its weapons and systems against them. Tessa works from captivity, Kaname becomes the mobile piece Gauron cannot completely control, and Sosuke and Kurz fight through the ship from the inside.
What changed
The Tuatha de Danaan spends most of the series as MITHRIL's safest and most technologically impressive asset. The finale works by turning that security inside out.

MITHRIL is the organization that puts Sosuke at Jindai High and gives the series its second world. At school he is an awkward transfer student. Inside MITHRIL he is Sergeant Sagara, an SRT Arm Slave pilot working with Mao and Kurz under a much larger military structure.
How you can tell
The Tuatha de Danaan, M9 Gernsbacks, ECS and the Arbalest repeatedly place MITHRIL technologically ahead of ordinary national forces.
Why it matters
The organization explains one of the central contradictions in Sosuke. He seems absurdly overqualified for everyday life because he really does spend the other half of his time working for people equipped to fight wars nobody else knows are happening.

Open page →Kalinin and Mardukas occupy different sides of MITHRIL command. Kalinin operates close to the field teams and understands Sosuke's military background better than most adults around him. Mardukas is the experienced officer beside Tessa who keeps the Tuatha de Danaan's bridge functioning with rigid professionalism.
Why it matters
Neither character exists simply to give orders. Kalinin connects Sosuke's present MITHRIL life to the wars that shaped him, while Mardukas helps make Tessa's command believable by showing what competent support from an older officer actually looks like.
