Rau Le Creuset commands the ZAFT team that attacks Heliopolis and spends most of Gundam SEED wearing a silver mask, speaking politely and encouraging everybody around him to continue making the worst possible choices. He is an excellent commander and mobile suit pilot, but the calm professionalism hides a very personal hatred of humanity. Rau is a clone of Al Da Flaga, Mu La Flaga's father, created as a replacement heir and left with accelerated aging and the knowledge that his life began as somebody else's attempt to defeat death. He turns that bitterness outward. Rau does not really want ZAFT to defeat the Earth Alliance. He wants Naturals and Coordinators to keep escalating until both sides destroy each other. The Providence Gundam simply gives him the firepower to push that argument personally.

ZAFT's most dangerous field commander turns out to be a clone of Mu's own father, engineered and discarded, which is exactly why he and Mu share an inexplicable extrasensory awareness of each other on the battlefield long before either of them understands why. His endgame isn't victory for ZAFT, it's human extinction dressed up as a cause either side would recognize.

The true architect behind the endless escalation between Coordinators and Naturals finally faces Kira directly, ranting that human extinction is the only honest endpoint for both sides. Kira, flying the Freedom and already worn down by loss after loss, has to win this fight while actively being talked at by someone trying to break him psychologically mid-battle, not just outfight him.
