The year is 2015. Fifteen years after a cataclysm that killed half the human race, the city of Tokyo-3 is under attack from beings called Angels, massive, incomprehensible, and apparently unkillable by conventional means. The only things that can stop them are the Evangelions: giant biomechanical units that can only be piloted by children born in the aftermath of the disaster. Shinji Ikari is fourteen years old. His father, commander of the paramilitary organization NERV, has not spoken to him in years. He is asked to climb inside the Eva and save the world. He does not want to.

Produced by Gainax and directed by Hideaki Anno, who made the series as a working through of his own four-year clinical depression, Neon Genesis Evangelion aired on TV Tokyo from October 1995 to March 1996. It begins as a mecha action series and becomes, by its end, something else entirely: a deconstruction of heroism, identity, and the terror of human connection so thorough it broke the genre it was working in.

26 episodes. The last two will make you feel insane. Watch The End of Evangelion immediately after. Then sit quietly for a while.

Gainax went bankrupt in 2024. The series endures.

The fights are not just interruptions between character scenes. Each one changes what NERV thinks an Evangelion can or must do.

Sachiel vs Unit-01: The Eva Fights Back

Shinji enters Unit-01 with almost no training and is quickly overwhelmed. After losing consciousness, he is no longer directing the battle.
The Breakdown
Unit-01 reactivates, tears through Sachiel's defenses and survives the Angel's self-destruction. The victory belongs to something inside the Eva as much as it belongs to Shinji.

Ramiel vs Operation Yashima: NERV Wins by Building a System

Ramiel's beam and A.T. Field make ordinary approach suicidal.
The Breakdown
Misato turns the battle into an infrastructure problem. Japan's electrical grid powers a positron rifle while Rei protects Shinji long enough for the second shot to land.
Why it matters
This is Evangelion showing that organization, trust and logistics can matter as much as raw Eva strength.

Israfel vs Shinji and Asuka: Perfect Timing Is Not Intimacy

Israfel can split into two coordinated bodies, so Shinji and Asuka must learn to fight in exact synchronization.
The Breakdown
They succeed by rehearsing movement until their timing becomes almost mechanical.
Why it matters
The episode creates one of the show's funniest victories while making a cruel point: two people can move perfectly together without understanding each other at all.

Leliel vs Shinji: The Battle Moves Inside the Entry Plug

Leliel traps Unit-01 in a space NERV cannot normally reach. Shinji is cut off from rescue and begins confronting his own memories and self-image.
The Breakdown
Before NERV can execute its recovery plan, Unit-01 erupts from the Angel violently.
Why it matters
The psychological material is no longer separate from combat. The Angel encounter itself becomes the mechanism that forces introspection.

Bardiel vs Unit-01: The Dummy Plug Makes the Choice

Bardiel infects Unit-03 with Toji inside. Shinji refuses to attack while another human pilot may still be trapped in the Eva.
The Breakdown
Gendo activates the Dummy Plug. Unit-01 destroys Unit-03 while Shinji is forced to experience the attack from inside the cockpit.
Why it matters
The fight breaks Shinji's belief that refusing violence keeps him morally outside it.

Zeruel vs NERV: Unit-01 Stops Behaving Like a Controlled Weapon

Zeruel tears through NERV's defenses, defeats Asuka and Rei and reaches deep into Headquarters.
The Breakdown
Shinji returns to pilot. When Unit-01's power expires, the Eva awakens, destroys Zeruel and consumes part of the Angel, acquiring an S² Engine.
Why it matters
The strongest victory in the TV series is also one of NERV's biggest losses of control.

Late Angels: Identity Under Attack

Arael vs Asuka: An Attack on the Self She Performs

Arael remains in orbit and attacks Asuka through forced psychological contact.
The Breakdown
The assault exposes childhood memories and insecurities while Asuka is unable to answer with the combat skill she uses to define herself.
Why it matters
The Angel wins without defeating Unit-02 in an ordinary duel. It attacks the identity Asuka built around being untouchable.

Armisael vs Rei: Contact Becomes Fusion

Armisael penetrates Unit-00 and begins merging physically and psychologically with Rei.
The Breakdown
Rei ultimately destroys Unit-00 and herself rather than let the Angel continue toward Shinji.
Why it matters
The fight makes the late-series question of identity literal: where one being ends and another begins.

Tabris vs Shinji: The Final Angel Does Not Need a Normal Fight

Kaworu reaches Terminal Dogma while controlling Unit-02 and holding NERV back with his A.T. Field.
The Breakdown
Once Kaworu recognizes Lilith, the decisive action becomes his request that Shinji kill him. Shinji complies after a long hesitation.
Why it matters
The final Angel encounter is devastating precisely because the enemy relationship and the human relationship are the same relationship.

Operation Yashima proves NERV can organize a brilliant defense. Leliel reveals Unit-01 can ignore that organization. Bardiel proves Gendo can override the pilot. Zeruel gives Unit-01 independence from the ordinary power leash.
Why it matters
The organization keeps winning battles while losing confidence that the weapon it depends on is actually under institutional control.
