PUU SPOILER!
PU
Puu hatches from the Spirit Egg Yusuke earned during his resurrection trial and immediately turns out to be a painfully accurate reflection of his owner's emotional core. Instead of the terrifying monster Yusuke might have expected, Puu first appears as a small, round, floppy-eared creature that is affectionate, vulnerable and impossible for Yusuke to admit he loves without embarrassment. The connection between them is literal: Puu reacts to Yusuke's spiritual condition and can suffer when Yusuke is near death. Genkai uses that bond to force Yusuke to confront feelings he normally hides behind sarcasm. Later, when Yusuke's dormant demon ancestry awakens, Puu transforms as well into a much larger phoenix-like spirit beast, visually confirming how profoundly Yusuke himself has changed.

SPIRIT ENERGY & SIGNATURE TECHNIQUES //
Open page →Puu hatches from the Spirit Beast egg tied to Yusuke's resurrection trial, and the joke is immediate: a boy who wants to look dangerous gets a tiny creature that is affectionate, vulnerable and emotionally transparent.
The connection is more than symbolic. Puu reacts to Yusuke's condition and suffers with him during the Spirit Wave Orb ordeal. When Yusuke's dormant demon ancestry awakens in Chapter Black, Puu transforms too.

Why it matters
Puu makes Yusuke's internal state visible. When Yusuke cannot say he is frightened, lonely or hurting, the Spirit Beast often says it for him by existing.
Genkai's Spirit Wave style is not just a larger Spirit Gun. It is a system of controlling Spirit Energy through the body, which is why Genkai can use it for offense, purification and training.
The Spirit Wave Orb is the inheritance at the center of Yusuke's Dark Tournament growth. Genkai compresses the bulk of her accumulated power into an orb and forces Yusuke to absorb it. The process nearly tears him apart because receiving power and being able to contain it are different problems.

What changed
After surviving the Orb, Yusuke is carrying Genkai's legacy physically. The later Toguro fight is therefore not simply Yusuke getting stronger between rounds.
DARK TOURNAMENT WATCH GUIDE //
Open page →The masked fifth member of Team Urameshi is eventually revealed as Genkai, temporarily restored to a younger appearance by the way her spirit power affects her body. The reveal is more than a tournament twist because it leads directly into the transfer of her life's work.
Genkai tests whether Yusuke would kill her for power. He refuses. Only then does she trust him with the Spirit Wave and Spirit Wave Orb, knowing the transfer itself may kill him.

Why it matters
Yusuke does not inherit Genkai's strength because he wants power badly enough. He inherits it because he proves there is something he values more than power.
