Bow and arrow constructed from spiritual particles, technical precision that makes him the most methodical fighter in the main group. Introduces himself as Ichigo's rival and enemy and gradually becomes something more complicated than either of those things without the show ever making a big announcement about it. Uryu's relationship with his father and with his bloodline's history runs underneath his arc as a thread Bleach returns to across multiple arcs with increasing weight.

Hueco Mundo breaks the rescue team apart and gives each fighter an opponent that exposes a different weakness. Rukia confronts Kaien's face, Uryū and Renji are trapped by Szayelaporro, Chad reaches the limit of the strength he has built, and Ichigo's rivalry with Grimmjow becomes a fight over what protecting Orihime is supposed to mean. Aizen barely needs to be present because the Espada keep forcing the heroes to define themselves for him.
