Captain of Squad 5. Calm, soft-spoken, the kind of person every junior officer in Soul Society describes as approachable and kind. The betrayal that closes the Soul Society arc is one of the great villain reveals in shonen anime, not because it comes from nowhere but because Bleach had been constructing it in plain sight and trusting you not to see it. Aizen does not want power in the crude sense. He wants to stand above the heavens, above the system that created him, above the laws that govern Soul Society and the world beyond it. He believes this is his right. The show takes his argument seriously enough that he is genuinely threatening rather than cartoonish, and his presence casts a shadow across everything that follows him.

Aizen's staged death does more than hide him. It turns captains and lieutenants toward one another while he continues moving behind the institution's authority. Hitsugaya suspects Gin, Momo is manipulated through grief, and Central 46's orders carry weight long after the people supposedly issuing them are dead. Aizen wins the first half of the arc by making Soul Society police itself for him.

Aizen's Shikai is terrifying because the trick happened before the audience knew there was a trick. Anyone who witnessed Kyōka Suigetsu's release could have their senses manipulated afterward, which means eyewitness certainty becomes useless around him. The reveal retroactively explains the corpse, the confusion and why even experienced captains could be made to trust the wrong scene.
Episode 61 · Extraction
Aizen did not arrange Rukia's death because she mattered to him personally. Urahara had hidden the Hōgyoku inside her gigai, and the execution created a legal-looking route to destroy the soul surrounding it. Once Aizen takes the Hōgyoku and leaves with Gin and Tōsen, the series stops being a rescue story and becomes a war built around the thing Soul Society failed to realize it was protecting.
