The show introduces Tucker carefully and spends real time making you comfortable with him. It knows exactly what it is doing. Episode thirteen is one of the most devastating hours in the series and Tucker is the reason. Not a minor character. The show does not allow him to be a minor character.

Why it matters
Lab 5 shows what the system does with a researcher after ordinary morality should have made him unusable: if the work is still valuable, somebody can find a reason to keep the researcher around.

Why it matters
Keeping Tucker alive gives 2003 a recurring image of an alchemist who refuses to accept that his experiment is over. He becomes a grotesque warning about what Ed's own refusal to let go could become.
