Naruto: Shippuden

NARUTO -ナルト- 疾風伝
2007 -2017 Studio Pierrot TV Tokyo 500 episodes Completed
Action Adventure Martial Arts
Details & Synopsis
Naruto returns to Konoha after two and a half years of training with Jiraiya. He is taller, a little less reckless, and still nowhere near ready for what has been moving while he was gone. The Akatsuki are collecting tailed beasts. Sasuke has chosen Orochimaru. Every promise Naruto made as a child is about to become an adult problem.

Naruto: Shippuden ran from 2007 to 2017 for 500 episodes, which is long enough to contain some of the best material in the franchise and enough filler to make episode guides a basic survival tool. Both things are true. The Kazekage Rescue arc announces the scale. Pain turns the entire story back toward the loneliness Naruto started with. Itachi changes meaning every time the series tells you one more thing. The Fourth Shinobi World War eventually becomes bigger than the show can comfortably hold, but when Shippuden lands, it lands with ten years of accumulated weight behind it.

This was also the point where the old fansub rhythm collided with legal simulcasting. Dattebayo had been part of weekly Naruto life for years, then stopped when official same-week access finally became real. That transition is part of the history. The community did not vanish overnight, but the way people watched together changed permanently.

Five hundred episodes. Use a filler guide. Nobody gives out medals for pretending you did not.

Akatsuki Organization

Akatsuki Was Never One Simple Organization

SPOILER!

Yahiko's Movement · Pain's Deterrence Project · Obito's Eye of the Moon Plan

The red-cloud Akatsuki seen through most of Shippuden is only one phase of the organization. Yahiko helped build the original group as a peace movement in Amegakure. After his death, Nagato reshaped Akatsuki around the belief that overwhelming pain could force the shinobi world to stop repeating its wars. Behind Nagato, Obito used the organization and its Tailed-Beast hunt for a different end entirely: reviving the Ten-Tails and advancing the Eye of the Moon Plan.
Why it matters
The same cloak and name conceal three different answers to the same problem. Yahiko wanted cooperation, Nagato wanted peace enforced by fear, and Obito wanted to escape the real world altogether. Akatsuki makes more sense once those goals are separated instead of treated as one master plan everyone understood.

Yahiko's Akatsuki Was a Peace Movement

SPOILER!

Amegakure War Orphans · Local Resistance · Peace Without Great-Nation Control

Akatsuki begins in a country repeatedly used as a battlefield by larger nations. Yahiko, Nagato and Konan gather people who want Amegakure to survive without remaining trapped between the interests of the great shinobi powers. The original organization grows because the promise is simple: Rain should not have to keep paying for wars other countries start.
Why it worked
Yahiko was offering people in Amegakure something they could recognize immediately. The movement did not need an abstract world-conquest theory to recruit support. It was built around ending the violence people around them were already living through.

Yahiko's Death Changes What Peace Means to Nagato

SPOILER!

Hanzō's Trap · Danzō's Intervention · Pain Replaces Persuasion

Hanzō, threatened by Akatsuki's growing influence and working with Danzō, forces Nagato into an impossible choice that ends with Yahiko's death. Nagato does not abandon the goal of peace afterward. He abandons Yahiko's belief that people can be convinced to choose it. Pain is born from the conclusion that only suffering large enough to be universally understood can interrupt the cycle of war.
What changed
The objective survives while the method is inverted. Yahiko tried to build peace through cooperation. Nagato decides the world must first be made afraid of war.

Pain's Plan Was Not the Infinite Tsukuyomi

SPOILER!

Money · Mercenary Power · Tailed-Beast Deterrence · Peace Through Fear

Nagato's stated plan gives Akatsuki a practical path to power before it ever becomes a world-ending ritual. The organization accumulates money, builds a reputation as a mercenary force, undermines the traditional village system by offering military power cheaply, and gathers the Tailed Beasts as weapons no nation can safely ignore. Nagato intends catastrophic force to become a lesson the world will periodically remember whenever another generation starts moving toward war.
Why it matters
Pain is not secretly describing Obito's dream world when he talks about peace. His solution is brutal, but it is his own: make war so frightening and so costly that fear produces temporary peace until humanity forgets and has to be reminded again.

Why the Tailed Beasts Were the Perfect Target

SPOILER!

Military Deterrents · Jinchūriki Isolation · Power Already Divided Between Nations

The Tailed Beasts already sit at the center of the shinobi world's military balance. Villages treat them as strategic weapons, while many jinchūriki live isolated from the very communities expected to protect them. Akatsuki does not have to invent a new source of power. It only has to collect weapons the villages have already concentrated into a handful of identifiable hosts.
Why it worked
The great nations understood the value of their own jinchūriki, but they did not begin by treating the disappearances as one coordinated campaign against the entire balance of power. Akatsuki could hunt targets separately while the villages continued thinking locally.

The Mercenary Business Was Part of the Strategy

SPOILER!

Cheap Contracts · Revenue · Undercut the Hidden Villages

Akatsuki takes paid work because money and reputation are part of Nagato's road to political power. A small organization of elite missing-nin can accept dangerous jobs without maintaining a village, civilian population or national bureaucracy. That lets Akatsuki build funds while also competing with the institutions it ultimately intends to make obsolete.
Why it worked
The members do not need to share Nagato's philosophy for the business model to function. Kakuzu can care about money, Hidan can care about Jashin, Deidara can care about art, and the organization can still turn their private motives into useful labor.

The Gedō Statue Turns Captures Into a Shared Project

SPOILER!

Nine Seals · Tailed-Beast Extraction · Remote Projection

Capturing a jinchūriki is only the field operation. The actual collection happens when Akatsuki gathers around the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and extracts the Tailed Beast into it. Members can participate through projected forms rather than physically returning from every assignment, allowing the organization to keep widely separated cells involved in one central objective.
Why it matters
The statue is the point where a loose network of criminals becomes one organization. Members can have different motives and live in different places, but every successful hunt ends at the same machine.

The Rings Mark Seats, Not Friendship

Ten Positions · Fixed Symbols · Membership Outlives Individual Members

The Akatsuki rings identify positions within the organization, which is why the group can replace dead or departed members without pretending the relationships are permanent. Orochimaru leaves with his ring. Sasori dies and Tobi takes his place beside Deidara. The organization is built to survive turnover even though its members are some of the most dangerous and difficult people in the shinobi world.
Why it matters
Akatsuki looks iconic because the cloak, ring and pairings create a strong visual identity, but structurally those symbols make individual criminals interchangeable enough for the larger project to continue.

Two-Man Cells Make an Unstable Roster Usable

Small Footprint · Complementary Abilities · Mutual Supervision

Akatsuki does not move as one ten-person strike force. Most field work is handled by two-person cells. That keeps missions mobile, gives each member immediate backup, and limits how many volatile personalities have to cooperate at once. The pair system also makes it easier to match very different abilities against the same target.
Why it worked
A village builds teams around long-term trust and training. Akatsuki cannot depend on either. Two-person cells are the minimum amount of cooperation required to turn a roster of missing-nin into repeatable operations.

Zetsu Is the Network Between the Cells

SPOILER!

Reconnaissance · Message Relay · Corpse Disposal · Battlefield Observation

Zetsu fills a role the normal pair structure cannot. He travels through terrain, observes battles, carries information between distant members and removes evidence the organization does not want recovered. White Zetsu and Black Zetsu share one Akatsuki identity while serving very different purposes inside the story.
Why it matters
Akatsuki can scatter elite pairs across countries because Zetsu helps keep those pairs from becoming isolated islands. He is less a conventional combat partner than the connective tissue of the organization.

Sasori & Deidara: Two Artists Who Disagree About Art

Permanence vs. Explosion · Senior Partner & Recruit · Still Operationally Compatible

Sasori believes art should endure. Deidara believes art exists in the instant it disappears. Their argument is not background decoration; it tells you how differently two Akatsuki members can see the world while still functioning as a field team. Sasori brings patience, poison, puppetry and intelligence networks. Deidara brings speed, aerial range and demolition.
Why it worked
They do not need to agree on art, morality or much of anything else. Their abilities cover different distances and different kinds of targets, while both are disciplined enough to keep the mission moving.

Itachi & Kisame: The Pair That Barely Needs Managing

Mutual Respect · Restraint & Force · Long-Running Partnership

Itachi and Kisame are unusually functional by Akatsuki standards. Kisame respects Itachi's ability and judgment, while Itachi rarely needs to control him through threats or personality management. Their methods are also complementary: Itachi is precise and economical, while Kisame can turn a failed quiet approach into overwhelming force.
Why it worked
Neither man needs the other to become his friend. What they have is professional trust, which is far rarer inside Akatsuki and often more useful.

Hidan & Kakuzu: The Zombie Combo

Immortality · Money · Constant Hostility · Abilities That Survive Friendly Fire

Hidan and Kakuzu openly irritate each other, but their pairing solves a practical problem. Kakuzu has a history of killing partners when angered. Hidan cannot be killed through ordinary physical damage. Hidan's ritual fighting style is reckless and requires time and blood; Kakuzu supplies ranged pressure, multiple elemental attacks and the experience to keep a larger battle under control.
Why it worked
Their personalities are a terrible match and their bodies are a remarkably good one. Akatsuki does not solve their hostility. It gives that hostility a partnership sturdy enough to survive it.

Deidara & Tobi: A Partnership Built on a False Identity

SPOILER!

Replacement Partner · Senpai Routine · Obito Hides in Plain Sight

After Sasori's death, Tobi becomes Deidara's new partner and behaves like an incompetent junior member who needs supervision. Deidara treats him accordingly. The joke works because Tobi is actually one of the people directing Akatsuki from the shadows, meaning Deidara spends his final stretch in the organization partnered with a superior whose real identity, power and purpose are deliberately hidden from him.
What changed
The pair structure stays the same while the information balance becomes completely fraudulent. Sasori and Deidara argued as peers. Tobi lets Deidara believe he is the senior partner because the disguise is more valuable than the truth.

Pain & Konan Are Not Just Another Assigned Pair

SPOILER!

Founders · Amegakure Leadership · Shared History Before the Criminal Roster

Pain and Konan appear to fit the same two-person pattern as the rest of Akatsuki, but their relationship predates the criminal organization around them. They survived the same war, learned from Jiraiya together, built the original Akatsuki with Yahiko and later ruled Amegakure from inside the structure that followed his death.
Why it matters
Treating them as just another Akatsuki duo hides the reason Konan remains beside Nagato when other members are held together mostly by missions and self-interest. Their partnership is the surviving core of the organization that existed before the red-cloud roster.

Obito Needed Nagato's Plan to Be Real

SPOILER!

Shadow Leadership · Different End Goal · Same Tailed-Beast Collection

Obito can use Pain's Akatsuki precisely because Nagato does not need to be pretending. Both plans require the organization to collect the Tailed Beasts and feed their chakra into the Gedō Statue, so their objectives overlap for most of the work. Nagato can sincerely believe he is building a weapon that will enforce peace while Obito waits for the same collection to make the Ten-Tails and Infinite Tsukuyomi possible.
Why it worked
A good deception does not require every instruction to be false. Obito lets Nagato pursue a goal that makes sense inside Nagato's own worldview, then uses the shared steps for an ending Nagato was never actually working toward.

The Man Calling Himself Madara Was Obito

SPOILER!

The Akatsuki Did Not Have One Transparent Chain of Command

Obito operates for years behind masks, aliases and deliberately incomplete information. Pain is the visible leader who assigns missions and directs the organization. Obito can appear as Tobi, behave like a disposable junior member, and later invoke Madara Uchiha's name when that identity gives him leverage. The people beneath him are not all working from the same version of who is in charge.
What changed
Once Obito stops hiding behind the comic Tobi persona and begins speaking as Madara, Akatsuki's public shape changes again. The field operative was never merely the replacement for Sasori. He was protecting access to the organization from inside it.

Black Zetsu Was Above the Plan Everyone Else Thought Was Final

SPOILER!

Altered Stone Tablet · Madara Manipulated · Kaguya Restoration

The deepest deception is not Obito fooling Nagato. Black Zetsu had already altered the Uchiha Stone Tablet so that Madara would read the Infinite Tsukuyomi as the path toward salvation. Madara then shaped Obito around that belief, Obito used Akatsuki to assemble the required Tailed-Beast chakra, and Black Zetsu allowed every layer to keep moving because all of it was useful for restoring Kaguya.
Why it matters
Akatsuki is a chain of sincere motives being exploited by someone one level higher. Nagato believes pain can create peace. Obito believes the dream world can replace reality. Madara believes he discovered the answer himself. Black Zetsu needs all three beliefs to survive long enough to do the work for him.

The Villages Saw Individual Criminals Before They Saw a System

SPOILER!

Separate Hunts · Separate Nations · Shared Threat Recognized Too Late

Akatsuki benefits from a shinobi world trained to think in village borders. A missing-nin is normally somebody else's criminal. A jinchūriki attack is normally somebody else's security failure. Akatsuki can exploit that fragmentation because its own members do not care which border they cross next.
Why it worked
The organization is transnational before the people fighting it are. The Five Great Nations do not become a unified counterforce until Akatsuki has already removed most of the Tailed Beasts from the board.

Akatsuki Could Lose Members and Still Keep Moving

SPOILER!

Replace the Partner · Keep the Ring Structure · Preserve the Objective

Sasori dies. Orochimaru defects. Hidan is buried. Kakuzu is killed. Deidara destroys himself. Itachi dies pursuing his own private end. Akatsuki keeps functioning because the organization is built around a project rather than around preserving every member. As long as enough people remain to hunt, seal, gather intelligence and protect the plan, losses do not automatically end it.
Why it matters
This is also the organization's weakness. Akatsuki is resilient to casualties because loyalty is shallow, but shallow loyalty means members can carry private agendas right through the middle of the project.

Pain's Defeat Ends the Akatsuki That Most Members Knew

SPOILER!

Nagato Changes Course · Konan Leaves · Obito Stops Needing the Old Structure

Naruto defeating Pain matters to Akatsuki as an organization, not only as a battle result. Nagato abandons the logic that built his version of the group, uses Rinne Rebirth on the people killed in Konoha, and dies. Konan leaves Akatsuki with him. From that point forward, Obito no longer has much reason to preserve the old arrangement of pairs, missions and hidden leadership.
What changed
The criminal organization that spent years collecting the Tailed Beasts gives way to Obito's direct war project. The name survives, but the structure that made Akatsuki recognizable is effectively over.
