Naruto: Shippuden

NARUTO -ナルト- 疾風伝
2007 -2017 Studio Pierrot TV Tokyo 500 episodes Completed
Action Adventure Martial Arts
Details & Synopsis
Naruto returns to Konoha after two and a half years of training with Jiraiya. He is taller, a little less reckless, and still nowhere near ready for what has been moving while he was gone. The Akatsuki are collecting tailed beasts. Sasuke has chosen Orochimaru. Every promise Naruto made as a child is about to become an adult problem.

Naruto: Shippuden ran from 2007 to 2017 for 500 episodes, which is long enough to contain some of the best material in the franchise and enough filler to make episode guides a basic survival tool. Both things are true. The Kazekage Rescue arc announces the scale. Pain turns the entire story back toward the loneliness Naruto started with. Itachi changes meaning every time the series tells you one more thing. The Fourth Shinobi World War eventually becomes bigger than the show can comfortably hold, but when Shippuden lands, it lands with ten years of accumulated weight behind it.

This was also the point where the old fansub rhythm collided with legal simulcasting. Dattebayo had been part of weekly Naruto life for years, then stopped when official same-week access finally became real. That transition is part of the history. The community did not vanish overnight, but the way people watched together changed permanently.

Five hundred episodes. Use a filler guide. Nobody gives out medals for pretending you did not.

Forbidden Jutsu & the Price of Power

Forbidden Does Not Mean the Technique Is Evil

SPOILER!

Risk · Human Cost · Ethical Violation · Knowledge Too Dangerous to Normalize

Kinjutsu are techniques that have been prohibited from normal teaching or use, but Naruto never gives them one moral category. Some destroy the caster. Some require human sacrifice. Some violate the dead. Others are dangerous because their power is easy to abuse or because the physical cost is unacceptable for ordinary shinobi.
Why it matters
"Forbidden" describes the shinobi world's judgment about the technique, not one universal mechanism. That is why the same label can sit over the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique, Edo Tensei, the Eight Gates and Uchiha reality-altering arts for very different reasons.

The Scroll Naruto Stole Was Restricted for a Reason

Episode 1 Callback · Forbidden Techniques as State-Controlled Knowledge

Naruto's first major theft is not just a scroll full of advanced tricks. The Scroll of Seals exists because Konoha keeps certain techniques out of ordinary circulation, including the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique Naruto learns from it. The joke is that the first forbidden technique he masters becomes one of the safest techniques in the world specifically in his hands because his chakra reserves are anything but ordinary.
Why it matters
The franchise introduces kinjutsu before it explains the category. Naruto begins by breaking the rule, and only later does the story show how many very different reasons a village can have for creating that rule.

Izanagi Turns Survival Into a Consumable Resource

SPOILER!

Reality Rewritten · Death Rejected · One Sharingan Permanently Spent

Izanagi is terrifying because it converts the Sharingan itself into a limited stock of impossible survivals. For a short period, the user can reject injuries and even death as illusion, but the eye that sustains the technique closes permanently when the effect ends. Danzō's arm of transplanted Sharingan turns that normally singular sacrifice into a repeatable combat resource.
Why it matters
The technique's cost is the safeguard. Danzō's body-hacking matters because he industrializes a kinjutsu that was never meant to be used over and over in the same fight.

Debut: Ep 210 - The Forbidden Visual Jutsu

Izanami Exists Because Izanagi Was Being Abused

SPOILER!

A Forbidden Technique Built to Police Another Forbidden Technique

Izanami is not simply Izanagi's offensive twin. It is created as a corrective technique for Uchiha who used Izanagi to escape every consequence they disliked. Rather than rewriting reality for the caster, Izanami traps the target in a repeating sensory loop until they stop rejecting the outcome and accept themselves.
Why it matters
The clan's answer to reality manipulation was not a stronger reality manipulation. It was a technique designed to make endless avoidance psychologically impossible, even though casting it costs another Sharingan its sight.

Debut: Ep 331 - Eyes That See in the Dark

Myth: Hashirama Cells Are What Make Izanagi Possible

SPOILER!

The transplanted Senju tissue improves Danzō's use; it is not the basic definition of the technique.

Danzō's version encourages the idea that Izanagi is simply a Sharingan-plus-Hashirama-cells recipe. The Uchiha already possessed Izanagi as a forbidden ocular art. Danzō's Senju tissue helps his non-Uchiha body manage multiple Sharingan and sustain the extreme strain of repeatedly using them.
Why it matters
The enhancement and the technique are separate pieces. Danzō's arm explains why his implementation is abnormal, not why Izanagi exists at all.

Deidara Stole the Kinjutsu Before He Ever Created C0

SPOILER!

Iwagakure Secret · Body Modification · C0 Is the Final Application

The forbidden technique in Deidara's history is the Iwagakure kinjutsu he stole and used to alter his body, giving him mouths capable of kneading chakra into clay. C0 comes later as the most extreme application of that altered body: the chest mouth consumes clay and turns Deidara himself into the final bomb.
What changed
This separates the source of Deidara's entire explosive-clay system from the suicide technique at its endpoint. C0 is horrifying because the stolen kinjutsu has finally reached a version where the artist and the artwork are the same object.

Debut: Ep 125 - Disappearance

The Eight Gates Are Forbidden Because Success Can Kill You

SPOILER!

Remove the Body's Limiters · Gain Impossible Power · Destroy the Body That Produces It

The Eight Gates are a perfect example of a technique being forbidden because it works exactly as intended. Opening the gates removes the body's safety limits and releases progressively greater power, but the same process damages muscles, bones and organs. The Eighth Gate converts the user's life itself into the final burst of strength.
Why it matters
There is no cursed artifact or immoral target here. The forbidden part is the exchange rate: the technique lets a shinobi borrow power from a body that may not survive repayment.

Myth: Any Extremely Dangerous S-Rank Technique Is Kinjutsu

SPOILER!

Flying Thunder God Is Lethal, Secretive and Difficult — but that alone does not make it forbidden.

Flying Thunder God is one of the most dangerous techniques in the franchise and its Second Step turns teleportation into an almost impossible-to-react-to ambush. That does not automatically make it kinjutsu. Rank, rarity, lethality and forbidden status are different classifications.
Why it matters
A jutsu can be difficult enough that almost nobody can use it and deadly enough to decide wars without the shinobi system formally prohibiting the technique itself.

Debut: Ep 248 - The Fourth Hokage's Death Match!

Tsunade Temporarily Treats Rasenshuriken Like a Forbidden Technique

SPOILER!

The Technique Works · Naruto's Own Arm Is the Problem · A Later Delivery Method Changes the Risk

Naruto's first completed Rasenshuriken is powerful enough to destroy Kakuzu's chakra network at a microscopic level, but the same close-range contact damages Naruto's arm. Tsunade warns him against using it again because continued exposure could permanently ruin his ability to mold chakra. Sage Mode later lets Naruto throw the technique instead of holding it through the impact.
What changed
The technique does not become safer because its destructive effect is reduced. Naruto changes how it is delivered so the part that made it unacceptable to his own body is no longer attached to him at detonation.

Madara Turns Edo Tensei's Release Into a Loophole

SPOILER!

Kabuto Releases the Jutsu · Madara Performs the Seals · Contract Severed

When Itachi forces Kabuto to end Edo Tensei, the reanimated army begins disappearing. Madara knows the technique well enough to perform the release seals from the reincarnated side and sever his own contract before his soul returns. A forbidden technique created to control the dead has produced a dead shinobi who no longer answers to the summoner.
Why it matters
The danger of Edo Tensei is not only that the caster can weaponize the dead. Once enough knowledge of the technique survives, the system itself can create outcomes its current user cannot fully control.

Debut: Ep 336 - Kabuto Yakushi

The Reaper Death Seal Has a Release — and the Release Still Demands Blood

SPOILER!

Shinigami Mask · Souls Returned · The User Must Cut Open Their Own Body

The Dead Demon Consuming Seal appears absolute because caster and victim are both trapped inside the Shinigami. The Uzumaki mask ritual reveals that even this prison has a release mechanism. Orochimaru can free the souls sealed by Hiruzen and recover his arms, but the ritual requires the wearer to let the Shinigami possess them and cut open its stomach through their own abdomen.
Why it matters
Naruto's forbidden techniques often have loopholes, but the loophole does not make the original cost fake. Escaping one consequence usually means finding somebody able and willing to pay another.

Debut: Ep 363 - The Allied Shinobi Forces Jutsu
