GILLIAM II

Gilliam II is the operating intelligence of the XGP15A-II and therefore one of the few crew members who literally is the Outlaw Star. He manages ship systems, navigation support, diagnostics and maintenance while communicating through the vessel and small mobile service units. Gilliam is polite, dryly observant and increasingly willing to comment on the crew's questionable decisions, which gives the ship a personality beyond its machinery. His relationship with Melfina is especially important because both were created as parts of the same larger project, yet both develop identities that exceed their original functions. Gilliam cannot throw punches or fire a Caster, but every launch, repair and desperate combat maneuver depends on him. The Outlaw Star would not merely struggle without Gilliam; it would stop being itself.
