Read or Die

Read or Die

R.O.D: Read or Die
2001 -2002 Studio Deen OVA 3 episodes Completed
Action Spy Sci-Fi Adventure
Details & Synopsis
Yomiko Readman is a substitute teacher, a British Library special agent, and the kind of person who will risk her life for a book without considering that unusual. Her codename is The Paper because she can turn loose sheets into blades, shields, ropes, aircraft, and whatever else the next impossible situation requires.

Read or Die was released in 2001 as three OVA episodes, which means it has about ninety minutes to introduce a paper-wielding bibliophile, clone a collection of historical figures, threaten the world, and stage an action sequence over Washington that still looks expensive. It does all of that and leaves before the idea can wear out.

This was prime early-DVD and fansub recommendation material. Short enough to finish in one night, strange enough that the premise sold itself, and animated well enough that nobody had to apologize for handing it to a first-time viewer. The rooftop opening with the World Trade Center still in the skyline also fixes the production to a specific moment in a way nobody involved could have intended.

Three episodes. No franchise commitment required. The television sequel is a different thing and worth discussing later. Start here.

R.O.D OVA Master Combat Ledger

Yomiko Readman vs. Jean-Henri Fabre (Jinbocho Book Ambush)

Episode 1 · Jinbocho, Tokyo · The Paper Revealed

Fabre attacks Yomiko almost immediately after she buys The Undying Love, pursuing her through Jinbocho aboard a giant mechanical grasshopper while trying to take the book.
The Breakdown
This is the OVA's first real demonstration of why the British Library calls Yomiko "The Paper." She turns the ordinary paper around her into protection and weapons while refusing to surrender the book Fabre is trying to steal.

The fight ends with Fabre apparently defeated when his machine crashes, although the I-jin's strange insect-like lifecycle means he is not finished with the story.
Why it matters
R.O.D introduces Yomiko backwards. First she is an absurdly committed book buyer. Then an impossible attacker appears and the bookworm suddenly fights like a veteran secret agent. The transition tells you almost everything you need to know about her.

Debut: Ep 001 - Yomiko Readman, The "Paper"

Yomiko & Nancy vs. Otto Lilienthal (Aerial Pursuit)

Episode 1 · New York · Paper Takes Flight

Otto Lilienthal steals Yomiko's book during the Library of Congress investigation and escapes using the mechanical glider built around his identity as an aviation pioneer.
The Breakdown
Yomiko refuses to let the sky end the pursuit. She constructs an enormous aircraft from paper and takes off after him with Nancy, turning what began as a book theft into a full aerial chase.

They finally bring Otto down by attaching paper to his glider and sending him into the Statue of Liberty.
Why it matters
This is where Yomiko's ability stops looking like a single combat trick. Paper is not just something she can sharpen or hide behind. If the situation requires an airplane, she makes an airplane.

Debut: Ep 001 - Yomiko Readman, The "Paper"

Yomiko Readman vs. Genjo Sanzo

SPOILER!

Episode 2 · India · Nancy Goes Down, Yomiko Stops Holding Back

Genjo Sanzo confronts Yomiko and Nancy in India while the I-jin continue moving the material needed for Ikkyu's plan. His extendable staff, fire and cloud-riding abilities give Yomiko a very different opponent from the mechanical Fabre and Otto.
The Breakdown
Sanzo seriously wounds Nancy during the confrontation. Yomiko's response is immediate. She unleashes an enormous storm of index cards against him, overwhelming the I-jin who had just put her partner down.

Sanzo survives long enough for the stolen book to continue moving through the I-jin operation, but the fight itself is over.
Why it matters
This is one of the first times the OVA shows what happens when Yomiko's emotional attachment to another person becomes stronger than her usual distracted gentleness. Nancy being hurt changes the way Yomiko fights.

Debut: Ep 002 - Rise Up, Oh Great Geniuses!

Yomiko Readman vs. Gennai Hiraga (I-jin Fortress)

SPOILER!

Episode 3 · I-jin Fortress · Paper Sword Against Electricity

Yomiko meets Gennai Hiraga directly during the assault on the I-jin fortress. The electrical attacker who opened the OVA by devastating Washington is now standing between Yomiko and the people she is trying to reach.
The Breakdown
The fight becomes a sword duel, with Yomiko shaping paper into a blade against Gennai's electrically charged weapon.

Yomiko finally turns the fortress itself against him. She uses a banknote to rupture a liquid-nitrogen coolant line, freezing Gennai before he shatters.
Why it matters
Gennai begins the OVA as an almost untouchable display of I-jin power. By episode 3, Yomiko does not beat him by suddenly becoming stronger than electricity. She notices what is around her and uses paper to make the environment do the work.

Debut: Ep 003 - Let There Be Light...

Drake Anderson vs. Jean-Henri Fabre & Stephen Wilcox

SPOILER!

Episode 3 · I-jin Fortress · The Ordinary Man Gets His Fight

While Yomiko pushes deeper into the I-jin fortress, Drake is left fighting enemies built to operate far beyond ordinary human limits.
The Breakdown
Jean-Henri Fabre returns after surviving his apparent defeat in Jinbocho, now fully matured and still armed with the insect abilities that made him dangerous the first time.

Stephen Wilcox is a different kind of opponent. He is physically integrated into the fortress machinery, making the engine room and its mechanisms part of the fight rather than confronting Drake as another conventional superhuman combatant.

Drake has none of the abilities surrounding him. He survives with firearms, experience and the willingness to keep fighting until the machinery around Fabre and Wilcox comes apart. The engine-room destruction kills both I-jin and helps bring the fortress down.
Why it matters
Drake spends the OVA surrounded by people who phase through walls, control paper, ride clouds and return historical figures from the dead. Episode 3 finally gives him the corresponding payoff. He does not acquire a supernatural answer to any of it. He remains a soldier, and that is enough.

Debut: Ep 003 - Let There Be Light...

Nancy Makuhari vs. Nancy Makuhari

SPOILER!

Episode 3 · I-jin Fortress · The Two Mata Hari Clones

The existence of two identical Nancys turns the fortress battle into a fight where simply seeing who survives is not enough to know who won.
The Breakdown
Yomiko's Nancy returns after Ikkyu seemingly killed her and confronts the other Mata Hari clone. Both women have the same phasing ability, making ordinary attacks difficult to land and forcing the fight into a contest between two people built from the same template.

One Nancy is left behind while the other reaches the rocket. Ikkyu assumes the woman who arrives is his partner.

He is wrong.
Why it matters
The fight does not end when one Nancy goes down. Its real payoff comes later, when handedness reveals that the survivor has been impersonating her counterpart long enough to get close to Ikkyu.

Debut: Ep 003 - Let There Be Light...

Stopping the Death Symphony

SPOILER!

Episode 3 · The Rocket · Ikkyu's Plan Reaches the Sky

Destroying the I-jin fortress is no longer enough once the rocket launches. Yomiko reaches the final stage of Ikkyu's plan with Beethoven ready to perform the Death Symphony.
The Breakdown
The surviving Nancy arrives first and allows Ikkyu to believe she is his partner. Once she is close enough, she turns on him and kills him.

Yomiko reaches Beethoven before the performance can be completed and destroys the organ strings, stopping the Death Symphony itself.

With the plan broken, Yomiko prepares to escape the doomed rocket with Nancy. Nancy refuses to leave Ikkyu's body behind and remains aboard while Yomiko falls away to safety.
Why it matters
The OVA does not resolve its climax with one final boss fight. Three different choices stop the plan: Nancy deceives Ikkyu, Yomiko stops Beethoven's performance, and Nancy makes one last decision that Yomiko cannot make for her.
