Commander of the Oniwabanshi, the Edo Castle ninja network. Cold, precise, two kodachi, economical in everything he does. His arc begins in antagonist territory: he brought his men into a fight for Kanryu Takeda and they died for it and Aoshi has not been able to process that since. His obsession with defeating Kenshin is not about pride. It is about the men he lost and the need to prove their deaths attached to something that mattered. The show treats this with genuine respect while making clear it has hollowed him out. One of the more honest character studies the series produces.

Why it matters
Aoshi's style evolves with his obsession. The more completely he reduces his life to defeating Kenshin, the more his fighting becomes concentrated around reaching one decisive close-range answer.

Oniwabanshū leader Aoshi Shinomori challenges Kenshin to prove his strength and honor the memory of the men who died under his command, using his dual kodachi and Kaiten Kenbu Rokuren.
The Breakdown
Kenshin refuses to validate Aoshi's belief that victory or death is the only way to give his fallen men meaning. Their second duel becomes less about settling an old score than breaking the obsession Aoshi has built around that loss. Kenshin defeats him without giving him the death he thinks he wants.
