Details & Synopsis
Taking Akira Kurosawa's sacred 1954 masterpiece and rebuilding it as a steampunk-mecha anime was an audacious gamble by Studio Gonzo, one they largely won. Produced to mark the film's 50th anniversary with an astronomical budget to match, the heavy early-2000s CGI is a product of its time, but the story underneath is timeless. Desperate farmers. Mechanized samurai for hire. Bandit warships the size of cities. Gonzo took Kurosawa's philosophical core, the fading relevance of the warrior class, the muddy morality of violence in service of survival, and grafted it faithfully onto a grand sci-fi canvas. Bombastic, respectful, and surprisingly moving. Proof that great storytelling survives any setting.

Samurai 7 Combat Ledger

Kambei's Group vs. Ayamaro's Samurai Hunt

Episode 6 · Kogakyo escape · Survive the citywide crackdown

After the Imperial Envoy is murdered inside Ayamaro's residence, the blame falls on samurai and the city becomes hostile territory. Kambei's growing group has to escape while the magistrate's forces close in.
The Breakdown
The important victory is movement, not a body count. Kambei uses deception, timing and the chaos of the city to keep the still-incomplete group alive long enough to get out of Kogakyo and continue toward Kanna.

Kyuzo vs. Kambei Shimada (First Duel)

Episode 4 · Kogakyo · Unfinished duel

Ayamaro sends Kyuzo after Kambei, giving the two master swordsmen their first real measure of one another.
The Breakdown
The duel does not produce a clean winner. Kambei recognizes that Kyuzo is an opponent he cannot simply dismiss, while Kyuzo finds a swordsman worth pursuing. Their rivalry is postponed because Kambei has already accepted a promise that matters more than finishing the fight.

Kanna Village Defense vs. the Nobuseri

Episodes 13–16 · Kanna fortifications · Costly victory

The Nobuseri attack Kanna after Kambei has turned the village into a prepared defensive position.
The Breakdown
The Seven do not win by individually overpowering an army of giant machines. Farmers, fortifications, traps, engineering and coordinated attacks force the Nobuseri to fight on terms the defenders prepared in advance.

The victory protects Kanna, but Gorobei is killed during the final assault.

Kyuzo's Final Battle & Katsushiro's Friendly Fire

SPOILER!

Episode 25 · Capital battle · Kyuzo killed by Katsushiro's fire

Kyuzo continues cutting through the Capital's forces during the final assault while Katsushiro is forced to fight with a gun after his sword is no longer enough.
The Breakdown
Katsushiro fires through an enemy while trying to protect Kambei. The shots continue into Kyuzo and fatally wound him.

The death is cruelly appropriate to Katsushiro's arc: the young man who wanted to become a great samurai survives by using a weapon that accidentally kills one of the greatest swordsmen beside him.

Kikuchiyo vs. the Falling Capital

SPOILER!

Episode 26 · Kanna Village · Final sacrifice

The damaged Capital continues toward Kanna during the final battle, threatening to turn the village's victory into annihilation.
The Breakdown
Kikuchiyo remains behind and uses his huge mechanical strength, together with the weapons and wreckage around him, to help force the Capital away from Kanna's path.

He dies saving the village.
Why it matters
The former farmer who built himself into a samurai machine gets the most literal possible version of the role he spent the series trying to earn.

The Surviving Samurai vs. Ukyo & the Capital

SPOILER!

Episodes 25–26 · Final assault · Capital defeated

Kambei and the surviving Seven attack the Capital while Kanna prepares for the war to reach the village.
The Breakdown
The finale is not one clean boss fight. Heihachi dies helping cripple the Capital, Katsushiro accidentally kills Kyuzo, Kambei reaches Ukyo, and Kikuchiyo ultimately gives his life to keep the falling fortress from destroying Kanna.

The system collapses at the same time the team does. Only Kambei, Katsushiro and Shichiroji remain when the village returns to planting.
