During the final battle, Katsushiro uses a firearm after his sword is no longer enough for the situation. His shots pass through an enemy and strike Kyuzo.

The young samurai who spent the series learning how to kill survives one of his harshest lessons by causing the death of a master swordsman on his own side.
The surviving samurai are not handed a new kingdom to rule. The village returns to its own life.
Why it matters
For all the machinery, imperial politics and giant battles added by the anime, the ending understands what the mission was for. Kanna survives long enough to stop needing the Seven.
