Samurai 7 · Stoic Elite / Dual-Wielder

Easily the coolest, most enigmatic figure in the entire show. Cloaked in a striking red coat and wielding double blades with impossible, lethal speed, Kyuzo is a silent, elite killer. He originally serves as a bodyguard to the enemy but joins the team solely for the opportunity to fight Kambei to the death in a fair duel later on. His stoic, untouchable aura and unmatched skill made him an instant fan favorite.

Kyuzo continues cutting through the Capital's forces during the final assault while Katsushiro is forced to fight with a gun after his sword is no longer enough.
The Breakdown
Katsushiro fires through an enemy while trying to protect Kambei. The shots continue into Kyuzo and fatally wound him.

The death is cruelly appropriate to Katsushiro's arc: the young man who wanted to become a great samurai survives by using a weapon that accidentally kills one of the greatest swordsmen beside him.

Kyuzo Joins for Kambei, Not for Kanna

SPOILER! Open →
Kyuzo begins as Ayamaro's bodyguard and recognizes Kambei as the opponent he wants to face.

He eventually joins the group with the expectation that Kambei must survive long enough for their duel.
Why it matters
The mission does not require every samurai to share one pure motive. Kambei can use a dangerous man's personal obsession as long as Kyuzo's actions protect the group.

Katsushiro Accidentally Kills Kyuzo With a Gun

SPOILER! Open →
During the final battle, Katsushiro uses a firearm after his sword is no longer enough for the situation. His shots pass through an enemy and strike Kyuzo.
What changed
The young samurai who spent the series learning how to kill survives one of his harshest lessons by causing the death of a master swordsman on his own side.

The Great War Makes 'What Is a Samurai Now?' a Literal World Problem

SPOILER! Open →
Kambei, Shichiroji, Heihachi and other veterans survived a war that is already over when the series begins. Kyuzo sells his skill to a merchant. Kikuchiyo builds himself into the identity. Nobuseri turn the warrior body into permanent military hardware.
Why it matters
The show does not treat 'samurai' as one stable job. Every major faction contains a different answer to what warriors are supposed to become after war.
