ALLEN SCHEZAR SPOILER!

AS

The Vision of Escaflowne · Major Supporting / Knight Caeli of Asturia

A Knight Caeli of Asturia, captain of the Crusade and pilot of the Guymelef Scherazade, Allen is introduced as the polished swordsman Van very much is not. His resemblance to Amano immediately complicates Hitomi's feelings, and Allen's natural charm does nothing to simplify the situation. He trained under Balgus, making him one of Gaea's finest swordsmen, but the controlled exterior hides a family history full of abandonment and loss. Allen's missing sister Celena becomes central to Zaibach's experiments, while his past relationship with Princess Marlene is eventually revealed to have made him Prince Chid's biological father. The romantic knight image is real, but so are the consequences of the life behind it.

Van Breaks the Zone of Absolute Fortune

SPOILER! Open →
The last battle is not won by Van overpowering one final machine in a conventional duel. Dornkirk's Zone of Absolute Fortune has turned the whole battlefield into the enemy, amplifying desire until allies attack allies and every violent impulse can immediately create another fight. Van is pulled toward killing Dilandau while Allen tries to protect the sister hidden inside him.
The Breakdown
Hitomi reaches Van before the killing blow and changes the choice he is about to make. Jajuka's death allows Celena to return. Van then follows Hitomi rather than the battle, reaches Dornkirk's machinery and destroys it. The decisive act is restraint before force. Escaflowne still swings the weapon that breaks the system, but only after Van stops letting the system decide what he wants.

Van vs. Allen

Open →
Van's first real sword duel with Allen is exactly the fight the younger prince needs and absolutely does not want. Allen is an experienced Knight Caeli, trained by Balgus and comfortable enough with a blade to expose how much of Van's confidence still comes from anger and royal pride. Van attacks hard and loses.
The Breakdown
There is no hidden super move here. Allen has better timing, discipline and experience. That matters because Van has just survived a dragon, awakened Escaflowne and lost Fanelia, all events that could convince him he is already ready for the war ahead. Allen proves otherwise in a few minutes. Their rivalry later becomes tangled with Hitomi, but the first fight is fundamentally a lesson from one swordsman to another.
