Details & Synopsis
Yota Moteuchi has spent so long being unlucky in love that his classmates have given him an unflattering nickname for it. He is in love with Moemi Hayakawa, but Moemi confides that she loves Yota's best friend Takashi Niimai instead. Heartbroken, Yota wanders into the mysterious Gokuraku video store and rents a tape promising a girl who will comfort him. When he plays it through his damaged VCR, Ai Amano literally climbs out of the television.

Ai is supposed to stay only long enough to help Yota recover, but the broken machine that played her tape has altered her. She is rougher, more independent and capable of developing feelings a Video Girl was never meant to have. As Yota keeps trying to help Moemi reach Takashi, Ai becomes the person who understands his pain most clearly, and the assignment she was created to complete turns into a relationship neither of them knows how to handle.

I.G Tatsunoko's six-episode 1992 OVA adapts the opening portion of Masakazu Katsura's manga but gives the material its own compact ending. The result is a melancholy romantic story about projection, rejection and the difference between being created to comfort someone and choosing to love them.

Video Girl Ai Six-Episode Watch Guide

The Tape Solves the Wrong Problem

Yota thinks his problem is that Moemi loves Takashi. The tape responds by giving him Ai, somebody whose entire purpose is to make heartbreak easier.

But Yota's deeper problem is already visible before Ai appears: he would rather help Moemi reach Takashi than risk making his own feelings part of the conversation. Ai can comfort the rejection. She cannot make that choice for him.
Why it matters
Episode one gives Yota exactly what the premise promises and immediately shows why that will not be enough.

Debut: Ep 001 - I'll Comfort You

The Date Makes the Temporary Arrangement Feel Dangerous

Episode three is where the supernatural setup starts behaving like an ordinary relationship, which makes everything harder rather than easier. Yota buys Ai clothes. They go out. They make memories that have nothing to do with Moemi's confession or a Video Girl's job description.

Then Ai's body glitches.
What changed
The OVA lets Yota and Ai experience something worth losing before it makes the possibility of losing it unavoidable.

Debut: Ep 003 - The Day Ai Wore the Clothes Yota Gave Her and Went on Her First Date

Confession Forces the Story Out of Limbo

SPOILER!
Moemi's confession to Takashi matters even if the viewer is already more invested in Yota and Ai. Until Moemi acts, almost everyone can remain suspended inside feelings they have not had to test.

Once the confession happens, the relationships stop being hypothetical. Ai's jealousy has consequences. Yota's self-sacrifice has consequences. Takashi and Moemi become people making decisions rather than symbols of what Yota cannot have.
Why it matters
The title is 'Confession,' but the episode is really about what happens after feelings stop being safely private.

Debut: Ep 004 - Confession

Yota's Picture Book Is the First Future That Is Not Built Around Moemi

SPOILER!
After Moemi and Takashi begin moving forward together, Yota pours himself into a picture-book project. It is a quiet development compared with Ai literally fading out of existence, but that is why it matters.

For most of the OVA, Yota reacts to other people's feelings. Helping Moemi, envying Takashi and worrying about Ai all define him in relation to somebody else. The project gives him something he is making because he wants to make it.
Why it matters
Yota begins to move forward before the finale tells him who he gets to be with. That keeps the ending from reducing his growth to 'he found a different girl.'

Debut: Ep 005 - Ai Disappears!

The Ending Chooses the Relationship They Actually Built

SPOILER!
The final episode strips away the original fantasy piece by piece. Yota enters Video World Turns Yota's Emotional Avoidance Into an Obstacle Course, confronts images tied to Moemi and Takashi and keeps moving toward Ai even though Ai began as a product designed to soothe him.

That distinction is the entire ending. Yota is no longer choosing the perfect girl from the tape, and Ai is no longer simply performing the comfort she was made to provide. He is choosing the person created by all the messy time in between.
Why it matters
The OVA closes by treating a relationship with an artificial beginning as real because of what both people chose after the beginning stopped controlling them.

Debut: Ep 006 - Ai, Ai, Ai

The OVA Gives the Opening Manga Story Its Own Ending

Video Girl Ai is a six-episode adaptation of the opening portion of Masakazu Katsura's much larger story. The OVA does not pretend to contain everything that follows in the manga.

Instead, it chooses a compact emotional question it can actually finish: Yota begins heartbroken over Moemi, Ai arrives as a supernatural cure, and the six episodes end after the relationship between Yota and Ai has become more important than the assignment that created it.
Why it matters
The adaptation feels complete because it finishes the emotional movement it chose, not because it exhausts the source material.

Debut: Ep 001 - I'll Comfort You
