SAYA OTONASHI

Saya Otonashi
SO

Blood+ · Protagonist

The first time you meet her she is oversleeping, late for school, bad at sports, and completely ordinary. That is not an accident. Saya is built from the ground up as a real girl first and everything else second. She trips. She gets flustered. She loves her brothers with a straightforward warmth the show never once treats as weakness. And then she picks up a sword and something ancient wakes up behind her eyes and the show asks you to hold both of those things at the same time, permanently, for fifty episodes.

That tension is the whole series. Saya is an amnesiac high school student who is also one of the oldest and most dangerous creatures alive, and Blood+ refuses to let either version cancel the other out. She is gentle and she is devastating and she is completely, entirely a girl in a way the writing never undercuts, even when she is at her most terrifying. The femininity is not a costume she puts on between fights. It is who she is. The power does not contradict it.

Fifty episodes with Saya and you will understand why people who watched this show in 2006 never quite got over her.

Open →

Early 1830s · two cocoons · one daughter and one prisoner

Joel Goldschmidt and Amshel discover two cocoons inside a Chiropteran mummy. The girls who emerge become Saya and Diva.

Saya is raised in the Zoo as Joel's daughter. Her twin is kept isolated in a tower, unnamed and treated as an experimental subject until Saya discovers her years later.
What changed
The sisters begin with the same blood and radically different human experience. Almost everything that follows grows out of that split.

1883: Saya Opens the Tower and the Zoo Burns

SPOILER! Open →

Joel's birthday · Haji's fall · Diva's escape

Saya releases Diva so her sister can sing at Joel's birthday celebration. She does not understand what years of isolation have made of Diva or what will happen when the tower opens.

That same day Haji is mortally injured and Saya saves him with her blood. By the time they return, Diva has killed Joel and the guests and the Zoo is burning.
What changed
One act of compassion creates two consequences Saya will carry for the rest of the story: Haji becomes her Chevalier, and Diva becomes the enemy she believes she must stop.

1972 Vietnam: Red Shield Wakes Saya Before Her Time

SPOILER! Open →

Forced awakening · uncontrolled violence · another buried memory

During the Vietnam War, Red Shield forces Saya out of hibernation because Chiropteran activity has become impossible to ignore.

The awakening goes catastrophically wrong. Saya fights without the control she has in the present, attacks beyond the intended targets and even wounds Haji before falling back into sleep.
What changed
Vietnam becomes the memory Saya fears most because it proves that her power can endanger the people around her when she loses herself.

2005 Okinawa: Saya Wakes Into a Family Instead of a Mission

George · Kai · Riku · one ordinary year before the past returns

Saya wakes in Okinawa without her old memories and spends a year as George Miyagusuku's daughter and Kai and Riku's sister.

Red Shield knows she will eventually be needed again. The life she builds before that moment is not treated as a waiting room.
What changed
For the first time in the story we experience Saya from the inside of the ordinary life she is being asked to leave. The coming war has to compete with something real.
