EDWARD ELRIC

Edward Elric
EE

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood · Protagonist

State Alchemist at twelve, youngest ever certified. Lost his right arm and left leg in a failed human transmutation attempting to resurrect his mother, and paid his brother's entire body as the toll when the Gate took Al instead. Automail prosthetics, a red coat, and a chip on his shoulder the size of Central Command. Brotherhood moves faster than the 2003 anime and expects more from its audience, and Edward keeps pace with it. He is brilliant, furious, and working toward a goal the series is honest about the cost of. The alchemy is spectacular. The character underneath it is better.

Once the Souls Are Restored, Father Starts Spending Himself to Stay God

SPOILER! Open →

Episodes 61–63

Hohenheim's countermeasure removes the Amestrian population from Father's reservoir, leaving him with far less human energy available to stabilize what he absorbed.

The entire surviving cast then attacks for the same reason: force Father to keep spending souls and power until the body can no longer contain what he took.
The Breakdown
The final battle is attrition on a metaphysical scale. Nobody needs to individually overpower "God." They need to make Father run out of the human lives he uses to keep that power under control.

Edward's Final Exchange Removes Alchemy From the Equation

SPOILER! Open →

Episode 63

After Father is defeated, Edward still has one problem no victory solved: Alphonse's body remains beyond the Gate.

Ed offers his own Gate of Truth, permanently giving up the ability to perform alchemy in exchange for bringing Al back.
Why it matters
Truth accepts because Edward finally understands what he has that is worth more than alchemy. The answer is not another secret law or stronger transmutation. It is the ordinary human network of people he once thought power would let him avoid depending on.

The Five Human Sacrifices Are Gate-Openers

SPOILER! Open →

Ed · Al · Izumi · Hohenheim · Mustang

Father needs five people with a connection to the Gate.

Edward, Alphonse and Izumi opened it through human transmutation. Hohenheim's existence is bound to the Xerxes transmutation that created Father's present form. Mustang is the missing piece, so Pride and Wrath force him through a human transmutation against his will.
Why it matters
Father cannot simply choose five powerful alchemists. The Gate experience is the qualification, which turns the heroes' past mistakes into infrastructure for somebody else's plan.
