VALERIA VERTONE
VV
Valeria Vertone appears alongside Duuz in "Law and Lawlessness" as an officer with the frontier private security force that detains the Outlaw Star. Where Duuz immediately treats Gene as exactly the kind of criminal he expects an outlaw to be, Valeria is more willing to test the crew's story against the evidence in front of her. That distinction matters when the apparent distress call they are investigating turns into a pirate attack. Valeria helps turn the confrontation from an interrogation into a temporary alliance, and afterward she and Duuz compensate Gene's crew with dragonite. She also comes close to asking the question Gene would rather avoid about the XGP hidden underneath the Outlaw Star's registration. This bio stays strictly inside her Outlaw Star appearance rather than folding in the later Angel Links incarnation.

Open →Myth: Outlaw Star treats every armed freelancer outside the law as the same kind of criminal.
The series keeps separating three things that can look identical from the outside: outlaw, pirate and hired professional.
Gene carries illegal-looking weapons, flies an armed grappler ship and takes dangerous jobs, but episode 19 makes the distinction explicit when a security force arrests the crew as suspected pirates. When an actual pirate attack arrives, Gene's crew fights beside the people who arrested them.

Why it matters
Outlaw Star is not about Gene becoming respectable. It is about him deciding what kind of outlaw he is willing to be.
The ship, the guns and the freedom do not answer that question. What he does when nobody is paying him does.
