Yomiko Readman would rather be buying books, reading books, or finding somewhere to put the books already consuming her apartment. That makes the other half of her life wonderfully strange: she is "The Paper," a field agent for the British Library Special Operations Division who can manipulate ordinary paper into shields, blades, ropes, aircraft and whatever else the situation demands.
Yomiko is absent-minded and awkward until something she cares about is threatened. Then the hesitation disappears. The OVA repeatedly builds its action around that contrast. Her ability is formidable, but what makes Yomiko dangerous is the speed with which she invents a new use for it.
Books are not decoration around her character. Her attempt to protect The Undying Love pulls her into the I-jin crisis in the first place, and her attachment to Nancy eventually matters more to her than Nancy's betrayal. Yomiko begins the OVA chasing a stolen book and ends it trying desperately to save a person.

Fabre attacks Yomiko almost immediately after she buys The Undying Love, pursuing her through Jinbocho aboard a giant mechanical grasshopper while trying to take the book.
The Breakdown
This is the OVA's first real demonstration of why the British Library calls Yomiko "The Paper." She turns the ordinary paper around her into protection and weapons while refusing to surrender the book Fabre is trying to steal.
The fight ends with Fabre apparently defeated when his machine crashes, although the I-jin's strange insect-like lifecycle means he is not finished with the story.

Otto Lilienthal steals Yomiko's book during the Library of Congress investigation and escapes using the mechanical glider built around his identity as an aviation pioneer.
The Breakdown
Yomiko refuses to let the sky end the pursuit. She constructs an enormous aircraft from paper and takes off after him with Nancy, turning what began as a book theft into a full aerial chase.
They finally bring Otto down by attaching paper to his glider and sending him into the Statue of Liberty.
WHY IT MATTERS:
This is where Yomiko's ability stops looking like a single combat trick. Paper is not just something she can sharpen or hide behind. If the situation requires an airplane, she makes an airplane.

Episode 2 · India · Nancy Goes Down, Yomiko Stops Holding Back
Genjo Sanzo confronts Yomiko and Nancy in India while the I-jin continue moving the material needed for Ikkyu's plan. His extendable staff, fire and cloud-riding abilities give Yomiko a very different opponent from the mechanical Fabre and Otto.
The Breakdown
Sanzo seriously wounds Nancy during the confrontation. Yomiko's response is immediate. She unleashes an enormous storm of index cards against him, overwhelming the I-jin who had just put her partner down.
Sanzo survives long enough for the stolen book to continue moving through the I-jin operation, but the fight itself is over.
WHY IT MATTERS:
This is one of the first times the OVA shows what happens when Yomiko's emotional attachment to another person becomes stronger than her usual distracted gentleness. Nancy being hurt changes the way Yomiko fights.

Destroying the I-jin fortress is no longer enough once the rocket launches. Yomiko reaches the final stage of Ikkyu's plan with Beethoven ready to perform the Death Symphony.

Yomiko reaches Beethoven before the performance can be completed and destroys the organ strings, stopping the Death Symphony itself.
With the plan broken, Yomiko prepares to escape the doomed rocket with Nancy. Nancy refuses to leave Ikkyu's body behind and remains aboard while Yomiko falls away to safety.
