Leylia is a priestess of Marfa whose disappearance motivates Ghim's entire journey, although for much of the OVA the audience sees her without knowing who she really is. Before vanishing, she helped nurse the injured dwarf back to health and became someone he cared about deeply. Karla takes possession of Leylia through the Grey Witch's circlet and uses her body while manipulating the War of Heroes. Ghim eventually recognizes the woman beneath Karla's identity and refuses to abandon her. His final attack knocks away the circlet and restores Leylia to herself, though it costs him his life. Freed from Karla, Leylia carries both gratitude and grief, as well as knowledge of the witch that few living people possess.

Leylia's body has become Karla's vessel, and the woman Ghim has been chasing across Lodoss is physically present while somebody else's will speaks through her.
That is why Ghim's confrontation with Karla is personal in a way Parn's is not. Parn wants to stop the Grey Witch from manipulating Lodoss. Ghim wants Leylia back. The two goals overlap, but Ghim is willing to put himself directly in front of Karla's magic to make the second one happen.

Why it matters
The possession turns Karla's philosophy into something intimate. Her idea of using people as pieces is not metaphorical. Leylia is literally being used.
Ghim reaches Karla before the rest of the party can turn the confrontation into a safer plan. He asks for Leylia back. Karla refuses. When Parn and the others arrive, the fight becomes less about defeating Karla's magic outright and more about reaching the circlet that holds her possession together.
Ghim takes the punishment necessary to get close enough. His final strike tears the circlet from Leylia and frees her, but the effort costs him his life.

The Breakdown
Ghim does not overpower Karla in a conventional duel. He wins the objective. Leylia is freed because he keeps moving toward the one thing that matters even when Karla's magic is killing him.
Karla's circlet is the real continuity of the Grey Witch. The body Parn and Ghim know as Karla belongs to Leylia, but Karla herself survives through the enchanted band on her forehead. Removing it can free the current host, but destroying or removing the body is not the same thing as ending Karla.
That distinction becomes brutally clear when Ghim succeeds. Leylia is released, yet Karla's will immediately finds another vessel in Woodchuck. The victory is real, but incomplete.

How you can tell
When the circlet remains in play, Karla remains in play. The face can change. The voice and purpose behind it do not.
The party's victory over Karla lasts only long enough for them to understand the rule they missed. Leylia is free, but Karla was never tied permanently to Leylia. Woodchuck disappears after the battle, and the final reveal shows the Grey Witch continuing through him.
It is a cruel ending for a character who spent much of the journey surviving through instinct, cynicism and opportunism. Woodchuck finally belongs to a group that treats him as more than a prisoner or thief, only to become the next body used by somebody else.
