Details & Synopsis

Parn leaves his village wearing the armor of a disgraced father and carrying more determination than experience. His journey across the island of Lodoss gathers the kind of party fantasy fans recognize immediately: the priest Etoh, dwarf warrior Ghim, sorcerer Slayn, thief Woodchuck and high elf Deedlit. What begins as a young fighter trying to understand his father's legacy grows into a war involving kings, dragons, dark elves and the Grey Witch Karla.

Lodoss wears its tabletop role-playing roots openly. The party explores ruins, crosses kingdoms, argues around campfires and survives encounters that feel like they could have begun with somebody rolling dice. But the OVA gives that familiar structure weight through Deedlit and Parn's growing bond, Ghim's search for Leylia, Ashram's loyalty to Marmo and Karla's determination to preserve a balance no matter how many lives it costs.

Released across thirteen OVA volumes from 1990 to 1991, Record of Lodoss War became one of the defining fantasy-anime imports of the VHS era. Its detailed armor, painted backgrounds and straightforward high-fantasy imagery made it an easy recommendation to Western viewers already familiar with Tolkien, Dungeons & Dragons and fantasy role-playing games.

Central Park Media brought the OVA to North America on VHS and later DVD, helping Lodoss become one of those titles that circulated through specialty shops, convention rooms and fan recommendations long before streaming made old anime easy to find. For AnimeHistory, it is a compact piece of exactly the era the archive is trying to preserve.

001 Prologue to the Legend Aired Jun 30, 1990 ►

Parn and his companions are already deep into their journey when King Fahn sends them to seek the sage Wort and learn more about Karla, the mysterious Grey Witch moving behind Lodoss's wars. Their route takes them through the ruins of an ancient dwarven hall, where traps separate Parn and Deedlit from the others and old murals hint at the island's violent past. A sleeping green dragon turns the expedition into a desperate fight for survival, forcing the entire party to work together before the collapsing ruins bury them with their victory.

002 Blazing Departure Aired Aug 30, 1990 ►

The story jumps back to show how Parn's journey began. After he kills a goblin while protecting a young woman, the creature's tribe retaliates against his village, and Parn rides out in the battered armor of his disgraced father rather than wait for the attack to come. Etoh, Slayn and Ghim are drawn into the fight, and when the village survives, its elders send Parn away to investigate the growing evil across Lodoss. What starts as exile becomes the first step toward the adventure he has wanted all his life.

003 The Black Knight Aired Sep 30, 1990 ►

Parn finally meets Deedlit properly when the high elf intervenes during an attack by a dark elf and her kobold followers. The group is arrested soon afterward and thrown into a fortress dungeon, where the thief Woodchuck tells them that Marmo's invasion has already swallowed much of Alania and Kanon. Lord Ashram, the black knight serving Emperor Beld, attacks the fortress that night. The defenders are overwhelmed, and Parn's party escapes with Woodchuck while the captain who freed them rides out to face Ashram and dies buying them time.

004 The Grey Witch Aired Oct 31, 1990 ►

With Alania refusing to stand against Marmo, Parn's group cuts through the dangerous Forest of No Return on the way to Valis. The forest attacks them through illusion rather than force, nearly drawing Ghim away with a vision of the missing Leylia he has been searching for. On the far side they find Princess Fianna under attack by Karla, only for Ghim to recognize the Grey Witch's body as Leylia's. Karla releases the princess after testing the party's resolve, confirming that the war against Marmo is being manipulated by someone with an agenda of her own.

005 The Desert King Aired Nov 30, 1990 ►

Parn's party is welcomed in Valis for rescuing Princess Fianna, and the celebration brings them face to face with Kashue, the famed mercenary who became king of Flaim. Parn is instantly taken with the kind of heroic swordsman he wants to become, while Woodchuck wanders into trouble and discovers that Karla has freed a dangerous prisoner inside the castle. The assassin crashes the gathering and goes after Kashue, giving Parn just enough time to interfere before the Desert King finishes the fight. With Karla's motives still unclear, Fahn and Kashue send Parn to seek answers from Wort.

006 The Sword of the Dark Emperor Aired Dec 20, 1990 ►

Marmo begins burning its way through Valis, deliberately drawing King Fahn toward the confrontation Emperor Beld wants. Returning from Wort with a better understanding of Karla's obsession with preserving a balance of power, Parn warns Fahn that the Grey Witch will interfere whenever one side grows too dominant. Fahn then tells Parn the truth about his father: Tesseus accepted disgrace so he could defy the kingdom and save Princess Fianna from being sacrificed to a dragon. Parn keeps his father's armor with new pride as Valis prepares for the war that will decide the island's future.

007 The War of Heroes Aired Feb 28, 1991 ►

Fahn marches to support Kashue and realizes too late that Marmo has lured him into a battlefield hidden by fog. Parn clashes with Ashram while Deedlit is tied up by the dark elf Pirotess, but the real center of the battle is the duel between Fahn and Beld, old comrades now leading opposite sides of the war. Beld mortally wounds Fahn, only for Karla to kill Beld immediately afterward and prevent either empire from emerging victorious. Ashram takes up Beld's demon sword and withdraws, leaving Parn surrounded by the dead and finally convinced that Karla's idea of balance is just another form of cruelty.

008 Requiem for Warriors Aired Apr 30, 1991 ►

The group first collides with the mercenaries Shiris and Orson after Shiris mistakes Deedlit for a Marmo dark elf, revealing the terrifying berserker spirit that takes hold of Orson in battle. Ghim, meanwhile, can no longer wait to rescue Leylia and confronts Karla directly. Karla explains that she manipulates Lodoss to prevent any single kingdom from becoming powerful enough to repeat the destruction of ancient Kastuul, but Parn rejects a peace built by endlessly sacrificing other people. Ghim tears away Karla's circlet and frees Leylia at the cost of his own life, only for the witch's spirit to survive by taking Woodchuck as her new host.

009 The Scepter of Domination Aired Jun 30, 1991 ►

Marmo fractures after Beld's death, leaving Ashram in command while Wagnard pursues a far more dangerous source of power. He sends Pirotess after a high elf for a future sacrifice and points Ashram toward the Scepter of Domination, an artifact hidden at Fire Dragon Mountain that could give its owner control over all Lodoss. At the same time, the dragon Shooting Star begins devastating Flaim, forcing Kashue to march against it. Still grieving Fahn, Ghim and Woodchuck, Parn is initially left behind for being too reckless, but an attempt to abduct Deedlit gives him the push he needs to race after Kashue and the Marmo forces.

010 The Demon Dragon of Fire Dragon Mountain Aired Jul 31, 1991 ►

Parn reaches Fire Dragon Mountain with Kashue's party just as Ashram and Pirotess enter from another route in search of the Scepter of Domination. Their rivalry is interrupted by Shooting Star's return, turning the mountain into a three-way struggle between the dragon, Marmo and the heroes. Pirotess repeatedly risks herself to keep Ashram alive, and Ashram finally responds to the devotion she has shown him just as the cavern begins collapsing around them. Kashue, Parn and Orson use the sacred lances of Myrii to bring down Shooting Star, but Wagnard's agent escapes with the Scepter while Parn leaves haunted by what he saw between Ashram and Pirotess.

011 The Wizard's Ambition Aired Aug 31, 1991 ►

Back in Valis, Parn and Deedlit are finally close enough that neither can completely pretend their feelings are just friendship. The reprieve ends when Wagnard uses the stolen Scepter of Domination to amplify his magic and comes after Deedlit, whose high-elf life force is needed to resurrect the destructive goddess Kardis. Parn is completely outmatched and nearly killed as Wagnard takes her to Marmo. Saved by his friends and armed with King Fahn's Holy Sword, Parn sets out for the dark island while Kashue, Ashram and the other surviving factions are pulled toward the same final confrontation.

Wagnard begins the ritual to resurrect Kardis with Deedlit suspended as the sacrifice beneath Marmo's castle. Parn, Etoh, Slayn and Leylia fight their way into the island while Kashue and Prince Jester approach with their armies, only to be stopped when the ancient dragon Narse awakens to defend the fortress. The golden dragon Mycen meets Narse above the battlefield, giving the others a chance to press forward. Deep underground, Ashram reaches Wagnard before Parn does and attacks the sorcerer himself, turning the rescue into a race against Deedlit's rapidly fading life.

013 Lodoss - The Burning Continent Aired Nov 20, 1991 ►

Parn reaches the ritual chamber to find Ashram still fighting Wagnard while Kardis's resurrection tears at Deedlit and sends the battle above into chaos. Ashram mortally wounds the sorcerer but is defeated in turn, and Wagnard destroys the Scepter rather than let anyone else inherit the power he can no longer control. Parn takes Ashram's demon sword and combines it with Fahn's Holy Sword to break Kardis's hold on Deedlit, while Mycen defeats Narse and the resurrected monsters collapse with it. Lodoss survives, Kashue presents Parn with a new sword, and Parn rides away with Deedlit with the war finally behind them.

The young swordsman at the center of Record of Lodoss War, Parn begins his journey wearing his late father's armor and carrying more determination than experience. He wants to restore his family's honor, but the quest quickly grows beyond that personal goal as Marmo's invasion pulls him into the War of Heroes. Parn is impulsive, idealistic and sometimes painfully obvious about what he thinks a hero should look like, yet that sincerity is also why people trust him. Deedlit

Co-Protagonist / High Elf Adventurer

A high elf from the Forest of No Return, Deedlit leaves her isolated homeland because she wants to understand the wider world instead of watching her people retreat from it forever. She is graceful with a blade, deeply attuned to nature spirits and far more experienced than Parn when the two first meet, which makes his stubborn courage both infuriating and strangely appealing to her. Deedlit can be proud, sharp-tongued and openly impatient with dwarven sensibilities, but she is also one of the party's most perceptive members. Her growing affection for Parn gives the OVA much of its warmth, while her long-lived elven nature eventually makes her important to forces far darker than either of them expected.

Supporting / Priest of Falis and Parn's Closest Friend

Parn's childhood friend and a priest of Falis, Etoh is the steady moral center of a party that frequently contains more enthusiasm than caution. He joins Parn at the beginning rather than letting his friend wander into danger alone, and his healing magic, religious knowledge and level head repeatedly keep the group moving when swords are not enough. Etoh is not the loudest member of the cast, but that is part of his value. He believes in Parn before Parn has done much to justify the confidence and treats duty as something lived rather than announced. Around kings, elves, witches and legendary warriors, Etoh remains recognizably human, loyal and grounded.

Slayn

Supporting / Sorcerer and Party Strategist

A scholarly sorcerer living near Parn's village, Slayn joins the journey alongside his old friend Ghim and quickly becomes one of the party's most reliable sources of judgment. Where Parn charges forward and Ghim follows instinct, Slayn is usually the one considering what an enemy's magic actually means and what larger forces may be moving behind the obvious conflict. He is reserved without being detached, and his friendship with Ghim gives the group one of its quieter emotional anchors. Slayn's knowledge becomes especially important once Karla enters the story, because the Grey Witch cannot be understood as a normal battlefield enemy. He is the party member most likely to realize that before everyone else.

Supporting / Dwarven Warrior Searching for Leylia

A veteran dwarf with a heavy axe and very little patience for foolishness, Ghim begins his journey for one deeply personal reason: finding Leylia, the priestess who cared for him after a mining accident and later vanished without explanation. That search brings him to Slayn and eventually into Parn's party, where his experience and blunt practicality make him a natural counterweight to Parn's idealism and Deedlit's elven pride. Ghim can be gruff, but his loyalty runs deeper than almost anyone's. When he learns that Karla has been using Leylia's body as a host, he ultimately gives his life to knock away the witch's circlet and free her. It is one of the OVA's defining sacrifices.

A thief who joins Parn's party after meeting them in a fortress prison, Woodchuck is less heroic than most of the people he ends up traveling beside and is refreshingly honest about it. He knows locks, dice, knives and the practical side of surviving among criminals, and his experience fills a gap the knights and spellcasters do not. Woodchuck also carries resentment from losing years of his life in prison and watching nobler companions receive the praise he rarely gets. That bitterness leaves him vulnerable at exactly the wrong moment. After Ghim frees Leylia from Karla, the Grey Witch's spirit escapes through her circlet and takes Woodchuck as its next host, turning one of the party's most ordinary members into the vehicle for an ancient power.

Major Antagonist / Black Knight of Marmo

The Black Knight of Marmo and Emperor Beld's most formidable warrior, Ashram is the kind of antagonist Record of Lodoss War treats with enough dignity that he never becomes a simple monster. He is ruthless in battle, fiercely proud and utterly loyal to the cause he has chosen, but his loyalty is personal as much as political. After Beld's fall, Ashram inherits the burden of Marmo's future and begins pursuing power capable of changing the balance of Lodoss. His rivalry with Parn grows naturally from their opposing paths, while his relationship with Pirotess reveals a quieter side that the armor usually hides. Ashram is dangerous because he believes in what he is doing, not because he enjoys cruelty for its own sake.

A dark elf warrior serving Marmo, Pirotess combines speed, elemental magic and swordsmanship with a fierce devotion to Ashram. She initially appears as one of the most dangerous enemies facing Parn's group, especially because her abilities make her a natural mirror to Deedlit. Where the high elf fights beside humans by choice, Pirotess has tied her future to Marmo and to the Black Knight she serves. The contrast is more interesting than a simple good-elf/bad-elf divide. At Fire Dragon Mountain, Pirotess repeatedly risks herself to protect Ashram and ultimately dies after saving him during the collapse. Her final moments make explicit what had been building beneath their formal commander-and-subordinate relationship.

The Grey Witch is one of Lodoss's most unsettling powers because she does not think of herself as evil. Karla is the surviving consciousness of a sorceress from ancient Kastuul, preserved through a magical circlet and passed from host to host for centuries. Having watched one civilization destroy itself through concentrated power, she becomes obsessed with maintaining balance across Lodoss, manipulating wars whenever one kingdom or faction grows too dominant. The beautiful woman Parn's party first knows as Karla is actually the possessed priestess Leylia. Even after Ghim knocks away the circlet and frees Leylia, Karla survives by taking Woodchuck as a new host. Her idea of peace is horrifying precisely because it can justify endless suffering in the name of preventing something worse.

Leylia is a priestess of Marfa whose disappearance motivates Ghim's entire journey, although for much of the OVA the audience sees her without knowing who she really is. Before vanishing, she helped nurse the injured dwarf back to health and became someone he cared about deeply. Karla takes possession of Leylia through the Grey Witch's circlet and uses her body while manipulating the War of Heroes. Ghim eventually recognizes the woman beneath Karla's identity and refuses to abandon her. His final attack knocks away the circlet and restores Leylia to herself, though it costs him his life. Freed from Karla, Leylia carries both gratitude and grief, as well as knowledge of the witch that few living people possess.

Emperor Beld rules Marmo and drives the War of Heroes by launching a campaign to conquer Lodoss. He is not an inexperienced tyrant hiding behind an army. Beld is one of the legendary Six Heroes who helped defeat the Demon King decades earlier, making his descent into conquest more tragic than the role of ordinary villain. His black Demon Sword, Soul Crusher, stands opposite King Fahn's Holy Sword, and the war eventually brings the former comrades together as enemies. Beld defeats Fahn in their duel, but Karla immediately intervenes to keep Marmo from becoming dominant, killing Beld before his victory can decide the island's future. His death leaves Ashram carrying Marmo's cause.

The aging King of Valis represents the heroic generation Parn has grown up imagining from a distance. Fahn was one of the Six Heroes who defeated the Demon King, but age has not erased either his strength or the compromises buried beneath his legend. He welcomes Parn after Princess Fianna is rescued and gives the young adventurer a more honest understanding of his father, restoring honor that Parn believed had been lost. Fahn's history with Emperor Beld makes the War of Heroes deeply personal. The two former comrades eventually meet in single combat, and Fahn falls to Beld's Demon Sword. His death closes one era of Lodoss and leaves younger figures like Parn and Kashue to decide what comes next.

The king of Flaim is everything Parn wants a heroic swordsman to look like when they first meet: confident, skilled, charismatic and completely at ease in a room full of nobles and warriors. Kashue earned his throne rather than inheriting it, rising from a wandering mercenary to unite the desert kingdom of Flaim. That background keeps him practical even when the War of Heroes becomes wrapped in legend and prophecy. He recognizes Parn's potential without pretending the young fighter is ready for every battle, and later takes command against threats ranging from Marmo to the dragon Shooting Star. Kashue is one of the OVA's clearest examples of leadership built through experience instead of destiny.

Wagnard is the dark sorcerer whose ambitions eventually become even more dangerous than Marmo's military conquest. Where Beld and Ashram pursue power through kingdoms, armies and relics, Wagnard is willing to reach into forces that should remain buried. In the OVA he seeks the Scepter of Domination and targets Deedlit because the life force of a high elf can fuel his plan. His real goal is the resurrection of Kardis, the goddess of destruction beneath Marmo. Wagnard kidnaps Deedlit and begins the ritual, then survives being cut down by Ashram long enough to kill the Black Knight before finally dying himself. Even in death, his ritual nearly brings catastrophe to Lodoss.

A red-haired mercenary traveling with Orson, Shiris enters the story by attacking Parn's group after mistaking them for Marmo soldiers, which is a very efficient introduction to both her temper and her confidence. Once the mistake is cleared up, she becomes an ally during the later conflicts around Shooting Star and Marmo. Shiris is direct, competitive and much more emotionally transparent than she thinks she is, especially around Parn. Her interest in him gives Deedlit an immediate reason to bristle, but Shiris never feels like she exists only to manufacture a romantic triangle. She is a capable fighter in her own right and one of the OVA's most memorable additions to the party's extended circle.

Orson

Orson is Shiris's quiet traveling companion and one of the most physically dangerous fighters in Parn's extended group. He normally speaks and moves with an almost unnerving restraint, but battle can trigger the berserker spirit Hyuri within him, suppressing fear and emotion while turning him into a relentless combatant. That power makes Orson formidable and also explains much of his distance from the people around him. Shiris understands him better than most and often supplies the emotion he refuses or cannot express himself. During the OVA's later battles, Orson becomes dependable backup for Parn and Kashue, a warrior whose frightening combat state hides a fundamentally gentle and loyal man.

Wort

Wort is an ancient sage and another survivor of the legendary generation that once fought the Demon King. By the time Parn meets him, Wort has largely withdrawn from the political struggles of Lodoss, but that distance gives him a perspective few rulers possess. King Fahn sends Parn's group to him because the young adventurers need to understand Karla rather than merely find her. Wort explains the Grey Witch's obsession with balance and the danger of assuming that defeating Marmo alone will solve the island's problems. He functions less as a quest-giver than as a bridge between eras, one of the few people alive who remembers when today's legends were simply companions making dangerous choices.

Princess Fianna

The princess of Valis becomes part of Parn's journey when Karla attacks her party and Parn's group intervenes. Fianna's rescue gives the inexperienced adventurers their first real connection to the political center of Lodoss and earns them an audience with King Fahn. She is not presented as a warrior like Deedlit or Shiris, but she is far from irrelevant to the larger story. Her position makes her a target in struggles over Valis, and her survival helps bring Parn into the War of Heroes at exactly the moment he is beginning to understand what his father's disgraced knighthood actually meant. Fianna represents the ordinary responsibilities hidden underneath the grand language of kings and legends.

Karla is the OVA's most dangerous kind of antagonist because she rarely wants the obvious thing. She does not march under Marmo's banner, does not want Beld to conquer Lodoss, and does not become a hidden ally of Valis. She believes Lodoss survives only when no single power becomes strong enough to dominate the island.

That belief lets her help one side and ruin it later without seeing herself as inconsistent. She can interfere with Princess Fianna, speak calmly with King Kashue, steer the war, and then turn on Beld when his victory threatens the balance she wants. To Karla, kingdoms, kings and adventurers are pieces on a board that has to remain permanently unsettled.

Why it matters

The Grey Witch makes 'balance' frightening. Her goal sounds cautious until the OVA shows how much suffering she is willing to preserve in order to maintain it.

The Circlet

Karla's circlet is the real continuity of the Grey Witch. The body Parn and Ghim know as Karla belongs to Leylia, but Karla herself survives through the enchanted band on her forehead. Removing it can free the current host, but destroying or removing the body is not the same thing as ending Karla.

That distinction becomes brutally clear when Ghim succeeds. Leylia is released, yet Karla's will immediately finds another vessel in Woodchuck. The victory is real, but incomplete.

How you can tell

When the circlet remains in play, Karla remains in play. The face can change. The voice and purpose behind it do not.

Ghim begins his journey looking for Leylia, the missing young priestess he cares for like family. The answer he eventually finds is worse than simple kidnapping. Leylia's body has become Karla's vessel, and the woman Ghim has been chasing across Lodoss is physically present while somebody else's will speaks through her.

That is why Ghim's confrontation with Karla is personal in a way Parn's is not. Parn wants to stop the Grey Witch from manipulating Lodoss. Ghim wants Leylia back. The two goals overlap, but Ghim is willing to put himself directly in front of Karla's magic to make the second one happen.

Why it matters

The possession turns Karla's philosophy into something intimate. Her idea of using people as pieces is not metaphorical. Leylia is literally being used.

Karla's Balance

Karla believes a united Lodoss is more dangerous than a divided one. Her model comes from the destruction of Kastuul: when too much power gathers in one place, catastrophe follows. So she works to prevent any kingdom, ruler or faction from becoming strong enough to control the island.

The problem is the price of her solution. Balance does not mean peace. It means wars that end before one side can win, rivals kept strong enough to threaten one another, and generations of people living inside conflicts Karla considers useful. Parn rejects her because she treats suffering as an acceptable maintenance cost.

Why it matters

Karla is not lying about wanting Lodoss to survive. The horror is that she has decided survival justifies keeping the island permanently unstable.

Kastuul and Karla's Logic

Kastuul's Fall

Kastuul is the ruined civilization Karla points to when she explains why she fears concentrated power. The OVA does not need a long history lecture to make the point. Karla shows Parn the remains of the place she remembers and presents its destruction as proof that a civilization can become too powerful for its own survival.

Whether Karla's conclusion is justified is another matter. She takes one historical catastrophe and builds an endless political doctrine around it. Instead of asking whether Lodoss can learn from Kastuul, she assumes every attempt at unity will eventually become the same disaster.

Why it matters

Kastuul explains Karla without excusing her. Her fear has a history. Her answer to that fear is still to manipulate whole populations.

Breaking the Possession

Ghim Breaks the Circlet

Ghim reaches Karla before the rest of the party can turn the confrontation into a safer plan. He asks for Leylia back. Karla refuses. When Parn and the others arrive, the fight becomes less about defeating Karla's magic outright and more about reaching the circlet that holds her possession together.

Ghim takes the punishment necessary to get close enough. His final strike tears the circlet from Leylia and frees her, but the effort costs him his life.

The Breakdown

Ghim does not overpower Karla in a conventional duel. He wins the objective. Leylia is freed because he keeps moving toward the one thing that matters even when Karla's magic is killing him.

Woodchuck Becomes Karla's Next Vessel

The party's victory over Karla lasts only long enough for them to understand the rule they missed. Leylia is free, but Karla was never tied permanently to Leylia. Woodchuck disappears after the battle, and the final reveal shows the Grey Witch continuing through him.

It is a cruel ending for a character who spent much of the journey surviving through instinct, cynicism and opportunism. Woodchuck finally belongs to a group that treats him as more than a prisoner or thief, only to become the next body used by somebody else.

What changed

The party has learned how Karla's possession works, but not how to end Karla herself. The Grey Witch leaves the first half of the OVA defeated in one body and alive in another.
