MIHAEL KEEHL (MELLO) SPOILER!

Mihael Keehl (Mello)
MK

Death Note · Major Supporting / L Successor Candidate and Near's Rival

Mello is the other leading successor candidate from Wammy's House and the person least willing to accept Near as the natural heir to L. Rather than join the SPK, Mello enters the criminal underworld and uses a mafia organization to attack the Kira case from an angle no official investigator could. His methods include kidnapping Sayu Yagami and forcing the task force to surrender a Death Note, moves that make him dangerous to both Kira and the police. Mello's competitiveness with Near is genuine, but so is his determination to defeat Kira. Late in the case he kidnaps Kiyomi Takada, an action that costs him his life but exposes a weakness in Light's plan and gives Near the opening needed for the final confrontation.

Mello Forces Information Near Cannot Obtain Safely

Kidnapping and Theft Change the Board

Near works by accumulating evidence. Mello is willing to create a crisis just to force hidden information into motion. Kidnapping Sayu and taking possession of a real Death Note expose facts that a purely observational investigation might never reach.
Why it matters
Mello's recklessness is not separate from solving the case. He keeps breaking open pieces of the board that Light wants everyone else to leave untouched.

Near and Mello Solve Different Halves of L's Problem

They Compete With Each Other · Their Pressure Still Combines

Near and Mello never become a clean investigative partnership. Near builds the logical case while Mello keeps forcing Kira's network to react under pressure. Neither man has to know everything the other knows for their actions to become useful to the same end.
Why it matters
Light prepares for one successor to L. What reaches him instead is two incomplete successors attacking different weaknesses, with each man creating evidence the other can use.
