Teru Mikami is a prosecutor whose rigid belief in punishing evil makes him an ideal proxy when Light needs someone else to carry out Kira's judgments. Mikami has worshipped Kira's ideology long before Light chooses him, dividing people into those who deserve to live and those who should be deleted. After receiving a Death Note, he follows a strict schedule of killings and later accepts the Shinigami Eyes so he can act without waiting for names. His discipline is exactly why Light trusts him and exactly why Near's team can study him. During the final plan, Mikami's independent decision to act during the Takada crisis reveals the location of the real notebook and gives Near's side the chance to replace it before the warehouse confrontation.

The notebook that began with Gelus and passed through Rem to Misa eventually becomes the real Death Note used in Light's X-Kira arrangement with Teru Mikami. By this point the object has outlived Gelus, passed through Misa's ownership and become part of a plan built around keeping Light physically separated from Kira's killings.
Why it matters
The final trap is built around which notebook Near thinks Mikami has and where the real one is actually kept. The notebook's history matters because the endgame is an ownership and substitution puzzle as much as an identity puzzle.

With Near watching the task force closely, Light needs someone else to perform Kira's executions. He chooses prosecutor Teru Mikami, a devoted Kira supporter whose rigid sense of justice makes him predictable enough to trust from a distance. Mikami receives a notebook and becomes the public killing hand of Kira while Light remains inside the investigation.
Why it matters
The plan gives Light separation from the killings, but it also creates a second decision-maker. The final defeat begins when Mikami acts without Light telling him to.

Kiyomi Takada becomes Kira's public spokesperson while secretly carrying messages between Light and Mikami. The arrangement lets Light keep directing X-Kira without obvious contact, but it adds another person who can be watched, kidnapped or forced to improvise.
What changed
Light's system is now powerful but brittle. Kira is no longer one man with one notebook. It is a chain, and every extra link creates another way for Near or Mello to break it.
Near's Replica Swap · Teru Mikami's Blunder
Near's team exposes the final Kira arrangement by replacing Teru Mikami's real notebook with a replica. Mikami arrives at the Yellow Box warehouse believing he can kill everyone present except Light. He writes the names, waits for death, and nothing happens. Light's name is the one name Mikami omitted.
What changed
For the first time, Kira's identity is not an inference, a suspicion or a trap waiting to close. The evidence is sitting in Mikami's handwriting, and Light has nowhere left to move. The opening came earlier, when Mikami Acting Without Light Is the Fatal Break.

Demegawa treats his position around Kira as an opportunity for wealth and spectacle. Mikami sees that behavior as corruption of Kira's justice and kills him without waiting for Light to personally approve the decision.
What changed
This is an early warning about X-Kira. Mikami Is Useful Because He Thinks Like Kira, which means he can act independently according to what he believes Kira wants. That same independence later becomes dangerous to Light.

Teru Mikami is valuable to Light because his worldview is already close to Kira's. He does not need every target individually justified. He can continue the killings, maintain Kira's public judgment and make decisions that usually match what Light wants.
Why it matters
Delegation works only because Light believes Mikami will predict the same move Light would make. That belief turns independence from an advantage into the final risk.
Takada Is Kidnapped · Two People Solve the Same Problem
When Mello kidnaps Takada, Light kills her with the hidden Death Note piece he carries. Mikami does not know Light has already acted. Convinced Kira needs him, he goes to the real notebook and writes Takada's name himself. That unauthorized visit exposes the notebook Near's team needs to find.
What changed
Mikami does not betray Light. He makes the same decision Light makes. The plan fails because Light delegated authority to someone whose initiative had previously been the reason he was useful.

Kiyomi Takada believes she has been chosen to stand beside Kira, but Light uses her primarily as a protected communications layer between himself and Mikami. She carries messages, presents Kira's public voice and lets Light keep distance from the person doing the killings.
Why it matters
The arrangement protects Light only while every link behaves exactly as expected. Once Takada is threatened, both Light and Mikami have reasons to act without being able to coordinate first.

Mikami looks at the people inside the warehouse, uses the Shinigami Eyes and writes their names. Light's name is the one he leaves out because Light is Kira. When nobody dies, the failed execution does more than defeat the plan. Mikami's list identifies the person he expected to survive.
Why it matters
Near does not need Light to confess for the notebook test to matter. The omission makes Light's relationship to X-Kira visible in the same moment the fake notebook proves Mikami cannot kill the room.
He Solves the Same Problem Light Already Solved
Light kills Takada using his own hidden Death Note fragment. Mikami does not know that. Believing Kira cannot act freely, he goes to the bank where the real notebook is hidden and writes Takada's name himself. Gevanni's surveillance catches the break in Mikami's routine.
The Breakdown
Mikami does not fail because he stops thinking like Light. He fails because he thinks like Light at exactly the wrong moment. Light knows Mikami is being watched. The solution is to let Mikami visibly use a fake notebook while the real killings are carried out through the hidden network. Near's surveillance is therefore supposed to discover exactly what Light wants him to discover.

Light's plan is not to hide Mikami from Near. It is to make Near confident that he has understood Mikami.
Both Sides Think Mikami Will Prove Them Right
Near expects Mikami to write names in a notebook that cannot kill. Light expects Mikami to write names in the untouched real notebook and kill everyone except him. Neither side comes to Yellow Box merely to debate the Kira case. They come expecting the notebook itself to produce the verdict.
The Breakdown
The confrontation is already decided by which notebook Mikami is carrying before he enters the room. Everything else is waiting for the test to resolve.
The Second Substitution Is the One Light Does Not Know About
Once Mikami's bank visit exposes the real Death Note, Near's side can act on the object Light believed remained hidden. Gevanni replaces the real notebook with a copy, turning Light's own substitution strategy back against him.
What changed
Light still arrives at the warehouse believing Near has only tampered with the decoy. Near now knows there was another notebook and has altered the one that actually matters.
