Mikami looks at the people inside the warehouse, uses the Shinigami Eyes and writes their names. Light's name is the one he leaves out because Light is Kira. When nobody dies, the failed execution does more than defeat the plan. Mikami's list identifies the person he expected to survive.
Why it matters
Near does not need Light to confess for the notebook test to matter. The omission makes Light's relationship to X-Kira visible in the same moment the fake notebook proves Mikami cannot kill the room.
He Solves the Same Problem Light Already Solved
Light kills Takada using his own hidden Death Note fragment. Mikami does not know that. Believing Kira cannot act freely, he goes to the bank where the real notebook is hidden and writes Takada's name himself. Gevanni's surveillance catches the break in Mikami's routine.
The Breakdown
Mikami does not fail because he stops thinking like Light. He fails because he thinks like Light at exactly the wrong moment. Both men independently choose the same solution, and Mikami's version exposes the real notebook. This is the concrete failure described in Mikami Acting Without Light Is the Fatal Break.
Fake Notebook in Public · Real Notebook Hidden Away
Light knows Mikami is being watched. The solution is to let Mikami visibly use a fake notebook while the real killings are carried out through the hidden network. Near's surveillance is therefore supposed to discover exactly what Light wants him to discover.
The Breakdown
Light's plan is not to hide Mikami from Near. It is to make Near confident that he has understood Mikami.
Both Sides Think Mikami Will Prove Them Right
Near expects Mikami to write names in a notebook that cannot kill. Light expects Mikami to write names in the untouched real notebook and kill everyone except him. Neither side comes to Yellow Box merely to debate the Kira case. They come expecting the notebook itself to produce the verdict.
The Breakdown
The confrontation is already decided by which notebook Mikami is carrying before he enters the room. Everything else is waiting for the test to resolve.
The Second Substitution Is the One Light Does Not Know About
Once Mikami's bank visit exposes the real Death Note, Near's side can act on the object Light believed remained hidden. Gevanni replaces the real notebook with a copy, turning Light's own substitution strategy back against him.
What changed
Light still arrives at the warehouse believing Near has only tampered with the decoy. Near now knows there was another notebook and has altered the one that actually matters.
