GREED SPOILER!

Greed
GR

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood · Antagonist

Wants everything. Says so immediately and without embarrassment. Freedom, money, power, immortality, companions worth keeping. The most upfront homunculus about what he is and what he wants, which makes him the most legible and paradoxically one of the more interesting to watch. Brotherhood gives Greed two iterations and the second, built around his coexistence with Ling Yao, is one of the series' best extended character arcs. Two personalities sharing one body, each one changing what the other is capable of wanting. The show earns the place Greed ends up at. It takes the full series to get there.

Ling Accepts Greed Without Disappearing

SPOILER! Open →
Father pours Greed into Ling, expecting the human identity to be overwritten. Ling instead remains present and begins arguing with the Homunculus sharing his body.

Greed gains a host strong enough to contain him; Ling gains the regenerative and defensive abilities attached to Greed's Stone.
What changed
Possession becomes partnership because neither personality is willing to vanish.

Greed Learns His 'Possessions' Were People

SPOILER! Open →
Greed repeatedly describes friends and followers as things he owns. Ling understands the language immediately because he also defines himself through the people who choose to stand with him.

By the end, Greed recognizes that what he actually wanted was connection, not property.
Why it matters
Ling does not redeem Greed with a speech. Their shared body forces Greed to live beside a human version of the desire he has been misnaming.
