Fullmetal Alchemist · Antagonist

Ishvalan survivor. His people were exterminated by State Alchemists on government orders and he walked out of the massacre with his brother's research tattooed onto his right arm, arrays that deconstruct anything he touches. He hunts State Alchemists. Has specific and complicated feelings about the Elrics specifically. The 2003 version handles his arc with more ambiguity than most revenge narratives allow themselves, refusing to settle him into a clean category of hero or villain. He does not fit and the show does not try to make him fit.

State Alchemists Become Human Weapons

SPOILER! Open →

Ishbal · military orders backed by alchemical force

The military deploys State Alchemists into Ishbal because individual alchemists can do the work of artillery, demolition teams and execution squads with terrifying speed.

That is the history sitting behind Scar's habit of targeting State Alchemists specifically. To him the silver watch does not primarily mean scholarship. It marks somebody belonging to the institution that weaponized alchemy against his people.
Why it matters
Edward joins the military believing he can use the institution without becoming what it has been. Ishbal is the evidence that the institution has made the same bargain with talented alchemists before.

Scar Stops at Deconstruction Because Destruction Is the Point

SPOILER! Open →

Right arm · incomplete transmutation

Scar's signature attack performs the destructive stage of alchemy without continuing into reconstruction. He reads the structure of what he touches and breaks it apart.
The Breakdown
This is alchemy turned into assassination by refusing to finish the normal process. Scar does not need to build something new from a State Alchemist's body. He only needs the existing structure to stop holding together.

The Military Marches Toward a Massacre Somebody Else Has Already Prepared

SPOILER! Open →

Liore · the same machinery, a new city

Military escalation around Liore creates exactly the kind of concentrated death that Philosopher's Stone research requires.

Scar understands what is happening and responds by building his own transmutation around the approaching soldiers while trying to move civilians out of the intended sacrifice zone.
What changed
The Ishbal lesson becomes active. Characters are no longer remembering how a massacre was exploited for alchemy. They are watching the same structure being assembled again and choosing what role they will play inside it.

Scar Reverses the Victims Without Rejecting the Equation

SPOILER! Open →

Episode 42 · the Stone is completed

Scar turns the military force entering Liore into the human cost of the Philosopher's Stone and completes the transmutation through Alphonse.

The revenge is understandable because of Ishbal. It is also deliberately uncomfortable.
Why it matters
Scar's final answer still accepts the premise that enough human lives can become material for a greater purpose. He changes who is sacrificed, not the logic that permits sacrifice.

Zolf Kimblee: The State Alchemist Who Does Not Need an Excuse

SPOILER! Open →

Crimson Alchemist · violence without Mustang's guilt

Kimblee matters because the anime refuses to make every State Alchemist from Ishbal morally identical.

Mustang carries the war like a wound. Marcoh runs from what his research became. Kimblee enjoys the destructive freedom military alchemy gives him and treats human beings as opportunities to demonstrate it.
Why it matters
If Mustang represents guilt inside the system, Kimblee represents the system finding exactly the kind of person who enjoys what it asks him to do.

Scar's Brother: The Researcher Behind the Arm

SPOILER! Open →

A dead man whose work keeps directing the living

Scar's brother studies alchemy deeply enough to cross cultural and religious boundaries that many Ishbalans distrust. During the war, that research becomes bound to Scar through the transmuted arm he receives from him.

The arm gives Scar destructive alchemy he would never otherwise use in the same way and eventually becomes part of the array behind his Philosopher's Stone plan.
Why it matters
Scar believes he is avenging Ishbal, but the tool that lets him do it comes from a brother who was already trying to understand the same alchemical system Scar condemns.
