Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex · The Major / Section 9 Field Commander

Major Motoko Kusanagi is the field commander of Public Security Section 9 and one of its strongest cyberwarfare and combat specialists.

Her body is fully prosthetic, but Stand Alone Complex does not define her by constant anxiety about whether she is still human. Motoko is comfortable operating inside a cyberized world. She dives networks, changes bodies when necessary, uses remote shells and treats the boundary between physical and digital space as part of the job.

What makes her difficult to read is not uncertainty about her competence. It is how much of herself she chooses to reveal. Motoko can be blunt, playful, ruthless, curious and unexpectedly compassionate without ever feeling like those qualities cancel one another out.

As Section 9's field leader she makes decisions quickly and expects the others to keep up, but SAC also repeatedly puts her in situations where technical superiority is not enough. The Laughing Man case, the Tachikomas and Kuze all force her to deal with people or intelligences that cannot simply be solved by being the best hacker in the room.

Episode 1 · Hotel Hostage Crisis · Section 9 Victory

Section 9 enters the series during a hostage crisis involving armed geisha androids and government officials.

Motoko approaches from above using thermoptic camouflage while the rest of Section 9 secures the room and hostages.
The Breakdown
The operation establishes the Major immediately. She does not overpower the situation by charging through the front door. Section 9 combines stealth, cyberwarfare and coordinated entry, allowing Motoko to disable the android threat before the political crisis becomes a massacre.

Episode 2 · Runaway Multiped Tank · Section 9 Victory

The prototype HAW-206 escapes with the cyberbrain of its deceased designer inside it and begins moving toward the designer's destination while conventional forces struggle to stop the machine.

Section 9 has to disable the tank without treating it like an ordinary unmanned weapons malfunction.
The Breakdown
Batou and the others attack the HAW-206's mobility while Motoko closes directly on the machine. She physically forces the hatch mechanism far enough to push her prosthetic body to its limit, buying the team the chance to stop the vehicle and uncover the human intention driving it.

Section 9 vs. Umibozu

SPOILER! Open →

Episode 24 · Section 9 Headquarters · Forced Dispersal

Once Section 9 gets too close to the political core of the Laughing Man case, Umibozu commandos are deployed to dismantle the unit.

The goal is not a normal arrest. Section 9 is being erased as an organization.
The Breakdown
Aramaki's team uses its own headquarters defensively long enough to destroy sensitive material and scatter. Saito provides covering fire while the other operatives use the building, heavy weapons and prepared escape routes to deny Umibozu a clean capture.

Section 9 does not win the battle. It survives long enough for Aramaki's larger plan to keep working.

Major Kusanagi vs. the Umibozu Armed Suit

SPOILER! Open →

Episode 25 · Warehouse Battle · Tachikoma Sacrifice

Motoko is pinned by an Umibozu armored suit whose heavier weaponry leaves her with almost no room to counterattack.

The fight changes when the Tachikomas return.
The Breakdown
The Tachikomas were removed from Section 9 because Motoko no longer trusted their growing individuality in combat. They come back anyway and choose to protect her.

Their intervention destroys the armored suit and saves the Major, but the decision matters more than the hardware. Machines once dismissed as unreliable because they had become individuals independently choose to sacrifice themselves for another person.

Debut: Ep 025 - Barrage: The Rain of Death

Episode 40 · Poker Face · Wartime Flashback

Saito tells the story of meeting Motoko during an earlier war, when he was operating as a sniper against the force she was leading.

The story is framed as Saito's own account, and the people listening are never required to accept every flourish as documentary fact.
The Breakdown
Saito uses distance and positioning to control the engagement until Motoko closes the gap. By the end of the encounter he has lost his left eye and gained the attention of the woman who will eventually become his field commander.

Whether Saito embellishes the story or not, the point survives: Section 9 was built from people who once had very different loyalties.
