Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex · The Major / Section 9 Field Commander

Major Motoko Kusanagi is the field commander of Public Security Section 9 and one of its strongest cyberwarfare and combat specialists.

Her body is fully prosthetic, but Stand Alone Complex does not define her by constant anxiety about whether she is still human. Motoko is comfortable operating inside a cyberized world. She dives networks, changes bodies when necessary, uses remote shells and treats the boundary between physical and digital space as part of the job.

What makes her difficult to read is not uncertainty about her competence. It is how much of herself she chooses to reveal. Motoko can be blunt, playful, ruthless, curious and unexpectedly compassionate without ever feeling like those qualities cancel one another out.

As Section 9's field leader she makes decisions quickly and expects the others to keep up, but SAC also repeatedly puts her in situations where technical superiority is not enough. The Laughing Man case, the Tachikomas and Kuze all force her to deal with people or intelligences that cannot simply be solved by being the best hacker in the room.

Major Motoko Kusanagi: Full-Body Prosthesis

Full Prosthetic Body · Cyberbrain · Thermoptic Camouflage Open →
Motoko operates through a completely prosthetic body while retaining a human cyberbrain.

That gives her capabilities far beyond an unaugmented body: exceptional strength, speed and durability, direct network access, thermoptic camouflage and the ability to operate remote bodies or move between shells when necessary.

SAC does not treat those abilities as magic or as proof that Motoko has stopped being human. For the Major, changing bodies and entering networks are simply extensions of living in a world where mind, machine and information already overlap.
Why it matters
Motoko's advantage is not merely that her body is stronger. She is unusually comfortable operating across the physical and digital sides of an investigation, which is why Section 9 can use her as both its field commander and one of its most dangerous hackers.

Motoko & the Tachikomas

SPOILER! Open →

The Major Sees a Risk Before She Sees a Person

Motoko notices the Tachikomas becoming different from one another before most of Section 9 treats that difference as important.

Her response is operational rather than sentimental. A combat machine developing unpredictable individual judgment is a liability, so she removes the Tachikomas from active service.

The decision is reasonable by the standards of a field commander.

It is also incomplete.
Why it matters
The Tachikomas eventually prove that the individuality Motoko feared is exactly what allows them to make choices no synchronized weapons platform could be ordered to make. Her mistake is not noticing that they are changing. It is assuming change can only make them less reliable.
