SUGURU TESHIGAWARA
ST
A highly educated mathematics teacher whose immaculate academic credentials hide an increasingly dangerous obsession with Azusa Fuyutsuki. Teshigawara sees Onizuka as everything a teacher should not be and initially treats him as an embarrassing rival who can be removed through rules, tests, and institutional pressure. As his fixation on Fuyutsuki deepens, that respectable surface collapses into surveillance, manipulation, and violence, turning him into one of the anime's clearest examples of credentials without empathy.

Standardized ranking systems fostered intense parental pressure, social alienation, and an environment where teachers prioritized school prestige over student mental health.

Teshigawara and the parent lobby turn Onizuka's academic weakness into a dismissal condition: he must take the national scholastic test and place at the top. Fuyutsuki helps him study while his students scramble for ways to keep him from being fired.
The Breakdown
On the day of the exam, Onizuka abandons the safe choice when he witnesses Hidemi Ota being kidnapped. He rescues her, is shot in the process, and still returns to Holy Forest with only a fraction of the normal test time remaining. The posted perfect score keeps him employed, although the anime later reveals that the school's chairwoman manipulated the assessment. The real victory is that Onizuka chooses a student over the test even when the test appears to control his future.

Todai Elitism · Hidemi Ota · The National Scholastic Test Open →Teshigawara's polished credentials hide a vindictive streak and an obsessive fixation on Azusa Fuyutsuki. After Onizuka repeatedly ruins his attempts to get close to her, Teshigawara uses PTA leader Mrs. Ota and her spoiled daughter Hidemi to turn Onizuka's weak academic credentials into a dismissal campaign.
The result is the national scholastic test challenge that drives Episodes 13 through 15. This is the anime's major Teshigawara conflict. The later Fuyutsuki kidnapping and school-hostage material belongs to the manga and is not part of the 43-episode TV series.
