VEGETA

Vegeta
VE

Dragon Ball Z · Deuteragonist / Rival

The Prince of all Saiyans and the subject of perhaps the medium's most meticulously crafted character arc. Introduced as a ruthless, bloodthirsty conqueror, Vegeta's agonizing evolution into a reluctant defender of Earth is one of the most convincing long-form character arcs the medium has ever produced. His towering pride is simultaneously his greatest weapon and his most devastating flaw. To witness his tearful plea to Goku on Namek or his ultimate, blinding sacrifice against Majin Buu is to understand what DBZ was actually about the whole time.

The Saiyan Saga

Episodes 001–035 · Raditz → Nappa → Vegeta Open →
DBZ wastes almost no time destroying the comfortable ending of Dragon Ball. Goku has a son, everybody has settled down, and then a stranger lands on Earth and tells him his entire life story is wrong.

Goku is not an unusually strong human. Piccolo is not really a demon. The moon accident that killed Grandpa Gohan was not some unexplained curse. Suddenly all of those weird pieces from the original series belong to a much larger world.

And then Goku dies.
What changed
Dragon Ball's mythology becomes science fiction. Earth is no longer the whole world, death becomes a place you can physically train in, and the strongest techniques on the planet suddenly are not enough.

A Year Waiting for Vegeta

SPOILER! Open →

Eps 007–035 · Everybody trains knowing it may not be enough

The best part of the countdown is not that everybody trains. It is that everybody trains knowing they may still be nowhere close.

Piccolo and Gohan quietly become the emotional center of the show while Goku is literally dead somewhere else learning techniques from King Kai. Then Nappa arrives and the training montage gets graded in bodies. Yamcha, Chiaotzu, Tien and Piccolo are gone before Goku can even get there.

That is the first time DBZ really establishes one of its favorite kinds of tension: Goku is coming, but everybody else has to survive until he does.

Vegeta Turns the Full-Moon Curse Into Military Hardware

Open →

Great Ape · Power Ball · Saiyan invasion logic

The Great Ape stops being Goku's childhood curse and becomes Saiyan military hardware. Vegeta does not need to wait for a full moon; he creates the necessary trigger with a Power Ball.
What changed
Something mysterious from early Dragon Ball suddenly has a species, a battlefield purpose and a repeatable mechanism. The sequel's new world is not just bigger. It explains things the old one left strange.

Babidi Finds the One Fight Vegeta Still Needs

SPOILER! Open →

Eps 210–231 · Dabura · Stolen energy · Majin Vegeta

Babidi's plan is simple enough: steal enough energy to wake Majin Buu. The interesting part is what he accidentally finds in Vegeta.

The spell does not manufacture Vegeta's resentment. It gives him permission to indulge it. Vegeta wants the old obsession back. He wants Goku without families, children or seven years of change sitting between them.

And after he finally gets the fight he wanted, he realizes none of it fixed anything.
Why it matters
Majin Vegeta works because the possession is not a replacement personality. Babidi finds a weakness Vegeta already knows is there, and Vegeta uses Babidi as an excuse to reopen it.

Buu Keeps Changing Because Buu Is the Problem

SPOILER! Open →

Eps 232–287 · Majin Vegeta → Fusion → Kid Buu

Frieza has an empire. Cell has a plan. Buu barely has a stable personality.

That is why the saga feels so chaotic. He can become friends with Mr. Satan, split into good and evil halves, turn people into candy, absorb stronger fighters, erase Earth's population and then reduce himself to a pure little engine of destruction.

The heroes answer that instability with every new system the series has left: Super Saiyan 3, Metamoran Fusion Dance, Potara Fusion, Ultimate Gohan and finally the Spirit Bomb.
