The ultimate chaotic wildcard. Whether you're talking about the innocent, bouncy pink blob who turned people into chocolate, or the terrifying, shape-shifting menace he became later on, Buu was just wildly unpredictable. He introduced a completely weird, wacky, and ridiculously destructive flavor to the final chapters of the Z era. You never quite knew if he was going to take a nap or blow up a planet.

Dragon Ball Z does not really feel like one continuous 291-episode story when you have lived with it for years. It feels like four different versions of the same show handing the baton to each other.
The Saiyan Saga tears open everything Dragon Ball thought it knew about Goku. Namek takes that revelation into space and turns a martial-arts adventure into a war against an empire. The Cell era brings the danger home again, except now the threat is built out of the heroes' own history. Then Buu throws the doors off the hinges entirely: gods, magic, fusion, the afterlife, absurd comedy and planetary annihilation all sharing the same final stretch.

What changed
The last era of DBZ mixes domestic comedy, ancient magic, gods, fusion, the afterlife and planetary destruction without pretending they belong to separate genres. The instability is part of its identity.
Majin Buu Saga · What the arc actually changes
The Buu Saga keeps introducing answers and then refusing to let any one of them stay final. Vegeta's sacrifice is beautiful and fails. Super Saiyan 3 is astonishing and inefficient. Gotenks has absurd power and the attention span of a child. Ultimate Gohan looks like the clean solution until Buu absorbs him. Vegito dominates and still chooses not to simply finish the fight.
By the time Kid Buu appears, the villain has lost almost every layer the saga added to him. He just destroys things.

Why it matters
DBZ ends its last major battle by making individual strength insufficient. After hundreds of episodes spent chasing the next strongest person in the room, the final answer requires Vegeta, Mr. Satan, the people of Earth and Goku all doing different parts of the job.
